2023 Baseball Season

Off to a great start against a 10–26 Towson squad...we're behind 6–0 after one.

I guess we've completely written off midweek games to focus on trying to be competitive in A-10 play. Strategy certainly makes sense, but it's not fun.

Now 17–10.

Spiders have battled back a couple times only to fall back…closed to 6–4, then gave up a 5-run inning. Got it to 11–10, then promptly gave up another 5-run inning.

Final score 20–10 as the Spiders get mercy ruled again with one out in the 8th.

Spiders threw 252 pitches and issued 17 walks. Those are not typos.

Baseball is lucky that Lacrosse was already added a decade ago, otherwise I think they would be on the chopping block if it was added today.

Yup, Miller just said in the lax retrospective yesterday that they considered cutting baseball at the time, but its relatively recent success and getting guys into MLB was in its favor. That's all ancient history now though.

Save money and get rid of pitching coach for obviously we don’t have any pitchers.

Short update video - Woodson essentially confirms they are punting the midweek games so they can throw their best arms each weekend. Says they have to do this due to pitcher injuries (Willitts and Corso are two that come to mind). Had some really high praise for Jaffe, says putting a freshman in the 3 hole is very rare for him.

Yeah, shocking we aren't flourishing with four scholarships.

We haven't had a president who realized the real value of athletics since Heilman. So much money, so little investment.

Weekend home series against Fordham (15-22, 3-6) starts today at 2PM EST. Fordham was picked to finish 9th in the pre-season poll, and have not done anything up to this point to prove anyone wrong. They are 5-13 on the road, and most recently dropped two games to GW at home, who we beat two games to one in an away series earlier this month.

This is another series in which you feel like the Spiders have to, and should, take two games at least. The A10 schedule has been favorable to us through this weekend, but let's continue to take advantage, because those last two series of the year are looming large in my mind.

We are through three innings here at Pitt Field, and the Spiders lead Fordham 6-2. The boys are 2-10 with runners on, but those two hits were a three-run and a two-run home run by Jason Neff and Jake Elbeery, respectively.

Brock has settled in after a shaky first inning, let's see if he can keep it up into the middle innings.

Brock has gotten hit around hard in the top of the fifth, giving up 5 runs on two homers. Spiders are now down 8-6 and will need the bats to keep producing to win this one. Will probably have no choice but to throw Brock another inning given the lack of available arms.

Interestingly, Woodson turns to Rodriguez in relief in the sixth inning. He had been piggybacking Argomaniz early in conference play and started a game last weekend, so this is a shift in strategy.

I love the move by Woodson. After we got 7 in the 5th, it felt like we HAD to take that game. Win game 1, worry about 2 and 3 tomorrow. Playoff-type move that paid off big time. E-Rod shoving, getting the rare 4 inning save, allowing only 2 hits and notching 6 Ks.

Back in action tomorrow at 10 AM, with the Chaplain/President telecast on ESPN3. See y'all tomorrow with coffee in hand.

4–4 in the 5th. Spiders have three homers, but unfortunately gave up two walks sandwiching an error and then a grand slam.

Oh man. Argomaniz loads the bases on a walk, double, and hit by pitch, and gets pulled in favor of Subers. Subers immediately gives up a grand slam on his first pitch. Fordham has 8 runs on four hits, two grand slams.

Spiders also blasting the ball out of the park, but two slams beats four solo shots. Not done yet though!

Blech, Spiders can't manage to pull even, stuck at 8–7.

Subers struck out the side in the top of the 6th and the Spiders got a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't get Jaffe home and left the bases loaded.

Game was suspended in the top of the ninth with Fordham up 12–9. They'll finish it off tomorrow morning before the finale.

Spiders go down quickly in the 9th of Game 2. Final score 12-9 Fordham.

Game 3 just started, and boy did Jeremy Neff look good in the top of the 1st. Strikeout, fly out, strikeout.

Spiders take the rubber match, 7-4 over Fordham! The boys improve to 7-5 in the A10, with four conference series remaining.

The line on Jeremy Neff: 8 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 ER, 10 K. Just an awesome job to limit the damage, especially as the bats went cold after the third inning. A couple of solo homers are never going to kill you, and holding the opposing team to four runs over eight innings should be enough to get the win most days for the Spider's offense. Nice to see Mathes close out the game and go 2-3 at the plate today.

No weekday game this upcoming week. Our next A10 series is against George Mason (19-19, 6-5). They are currently in Game 3 of their series against St. Bonaventure, and are looking for the sweep.

Wow, that’s a 119 pitch effort from Neff. Not exactly a sign of confidence in the bullpen, but can’t blame Woodson for being aggressive in a series where you absolutely needed two wins.

Bleh, lost the no-hitter with one out but then immediately got a double play to end it.

Smart move by Tracy throwing Neff yesterday. Today’s game is almost certainly going to get rained out

Sure enough, today's game is canceled and won't be made up. Don't really mind that to be honest. Up next is a home series against St. Bonaventure, who are 4-11 in conference play.

Congrats to Jeremy Neff, who garnered A10 Pitcher of the Week honors this week. This award comes off his 6 innings of no-hit ball on Saturday. Remarkably, this is the third different UR pitcher to win this award this year (Corso on March 14, Rodriguez on March 27). You wouldn't know it from reading this forum all year.

Game 1 of the SBU series is tomorrow at 2PM EST from Pitt Field. Have to take two games. If you are fan of A10 baseball in general, the series to watch this weekend is VCU @ Davidson.

Spiders take Game 1, shutting out St. Bonaventure, 15-0. 8 innings of 3 hit ball from Brock, two home runs a piece from JSL and Hipsman at the top of the lineup, and that is now 20 consecutive shut out innings by the pitching staff.

After this complete dominance, one has to think we can take the next two of this series and get the sweep. Game 2 is tomorrow at 1PM. Neff on the mound.

Well, we will not sweep. Bonnies take game two, 8–7.

Game three is big. Can’t let up heading into a tough close for the season.

SBU pitcher Luke Roggeburk's last name sparked a memory from my youth. And sure enough, his grandfather is Garry Roggenburk, who pitched for the Twins, Red Sox, Pilots and Brewers.

Not a great start here at Pitt Field in Game 3. Argomaniz has looked shaky all three innings, walking and hitting batters, and finally letting up a grand slam in the top of the third.

One stat we do not want to be a part of: SBU has not won back to back games all season. Alden Mathes just hit a bomb in the bottom of the third and Kluska hit an RBI single. Spiders still trail 4-3 with six innings to play.

Congrats to Brock on winning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week! This comes after his 8 shutout inning performance on Friday, which included 7 strikeouts and only 3 hits. As I wrote last week, three Spider pitchers have already earned this accolade this year (Corso on March 14, Rodriguez on March 27, Neff on May 1).

Game tonight against NC State at 6PM EST. Not expecting much, but will be a good experience for the boys to play some really good competition before the final two A10 series, which will undoubtedly be our toughest tests of the conference schedule.
