2023 Baseball Season

Hard to get up for these midweek games when we know the "strategy" we'll be taking on the mound, but will at least be interesting to see how the lineup fares against an ACC pitcher.

One fun story to follow through the end of the season is the continued breakout of Jordan Jaffe - he's got a real shot to be Richmond's first A10 Rookie of the Year since Tanner Stanley in 2013. He's in a fairly tight race with St. Joe's 2B Ryan Weingartner, but is slighly ahead in my eyes for now.

Jaffe: .327/.406/.611, 53 Hits, 9 Homers, 47 RBI
Weingartner: .336/.408/.592, 51 Hits, 10 Homers, 32 RBI

Welp, today's game has been rained out and won't be made up. Wonder if we even got on the buses to Raleigh.

Starting to feel bad for how this is working out for the young pitchers on the squad - they're basically getting no in-game experience anymore. Our last mid-week was on April 19, and now we won't play another until May 16th. Since 4/19, Topolski, Armson, and Clifton have made one appearance each. Every other inning has been thrown by Weirather, Argomaniz, Neff, Rodriguez, Subers or Mathes.

Brock on the mound tonight vs. VCU true freshman James Gladden. VCU lists their next two starters as TBD, and their pitching is a weak point. They're very young and have some injuries, which has led to a team ERA of 7.29. Should be able to capitalize on that to make for a fun weekend at the Diamond.

Realistically, I'm hoping to take 3/6 from these two series vs. VCU and Davidson. Would much rather take 2 this weekend than try to take 2 vs. Davidson, who now has their All-American catcher Carico back in the lineup.

In Atlantic 10 news, Dayton just swept St Bonaventure, to go to 13-8 in conference play on the season. I imagine they had to get this series in on Thursday and Friday due to weather. Not a massive shock regarding the result of that series, but does not make the battle for 7 spots any easier for the Spiders.

Spiders get one in the top of the first, but Weirather gives up a single, HBP, and a three-run homer to give the lead right back. 3-1 VCU.

in a 26 run game Spider pitchers only gave up 1 walk while Rams gave up 9. Walks
have been our pitching staff’s nemesis. There little question we can hit.

Great win last night when the pitching staff clearly didn't have it. I was really questioning Tracy when he pulled Weirather for Rodriguez after only 55 pitches, but I guess the bats could have picked up anybody with that performance. Lets get another today with Neff on the mound.

VCU is going with another true freshman on the mound who will be making only his second start of the season. Time for the bats to go to work.

The boys are making a run at another comeback win. Down 8-3 at one point in the game, they've come back to tie it at 8-8 with a Jaffe two-run homer in the top of the 8th. The kid is pretty good!

Argomaniz had been effective in relief of Neff, covering 5.2 scoreless innings to keep the boys in the game. However, he just plunked the first two batters in the bottom of the 9th, and in comes Mathes to try to keep VCU from walking it off. Tough spot for him with two on and nobody out.

Mathes gets the first two on strikes, but gives up a hit and VCU walks it off. Tough. Both teams used their projected Sunday starters in relief today, so tomorrow's rubber match becomes extremely interesting. I assume we'll try to get 4/5 innings out of Subers.

Kyle Subers gave the Spiders a gem of a start today - 7 IP, 1 ER, 4H, 1 BB, 7 K. In comes Harrison Clifton to protect a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 8th.

Clifton walks the leadoff hitter, and now it's Mathes on to pitch for the second day in a row. Woodson going for it here.

Whew, Spiders escape as Mathes recovers from a grounder off his leg to get the out. One more inning!

losing one game like that is bad, but two days in a row makes me sick.

Obviously a disappointing weekend, but there is still a lot of hope for the Spiders to sneak into the conference tournament.

Given the George Mason sweep over GW and the Davidson sweep over SLU, there are now eight teams competing for the seven spots, with the Spiders currently in the 6th spot (some madness could happen if GW turns around and sweeps SBU, but will assume they are out for now). Luckily for Richmond, Rhode Island (currently 8th) hosts VCU this coming weekend (currently 7th), and so with those two teams hopefully beating up on each other, I think one win for Richmond this weekend at home against Davidson should be enough. Now, this one win may be a tall order given the way Davidson has been playing, but I like the Spiders chances to scratch and claw to take one.

Seems weird to me that our own athletic department is promoting the fact that some of our guys are checking out for greener pastures next year. I'm not passing judgement or anything, it's just a weird place to be.

They did their time here, gave us their best for four years and graduated.

Perhaps there is no academic future for them at UR. So maybe they have no choice but to go elsewhere if they hope to play for another year.

And yes, it's a whole new world. Seems like the four-year player will become the exception rather than the rule, as in the past.

Spiders scored 3 in the bottom of the 9th to eek out a win against Davidson, 11-10.

Spiders have actually clinched a berth. Worst the Spiders can finish is 12–11, while VCU and URI are currently both 11–11 and tied for the final tourney spot but playing each other, so at most only one of them can pass us at 13–11 if they sweep the DH tomorrow.

Another 2PM start today at Pitt Field. As SFspidur reported, we have indeed clinched the postseason, which will begin on Tuesday. We should see the Neff -> Rodriguez 1-2 punch today. Given the arms Davidson used yesterday (Flynn and Schomberg, two of the top four ERA leaders in the A10 this year), am I crazy to think the Spiders can win this series?

Given the opponents of the teams above us in the standings, I think it would take a lot for us to move from our current 6 seed.

We're fighting for the 5th spot with GMU. We're both 12–9 and they're playing St. Joe's, so they've got as big a challenge as we do.

One of the Spiders–GMU games was rained out, so we're 1–1 against each other and would need to move to another tiebreaker for seeding if we finish with the same record.

SLU is half a game ahead of both of us but finishing up with a weak Fordham squad.

I believe VCU has been eliminated, as they dropped the first game of the double header today. The best they can do is beat URI in the second game to tie them for 7th at 12–12, but URI would win a head-to-head tiebreaker 2–1.

Three-run shot by Kluska gives the Spiders an early 3–1 lead.

Interesting (and potentially sad) development here at Pitt Field. Neff was stung by a liner in the top of the 2nd, and finished the inning. However, Esteban Rodriguez came in to pitch in the third inning. Hoping Neff is okay, the next time he will be scheduled to pitch would be Wednesday.

Through 3 innings, the Spiders lead the Wildcats 5-2!
