2023 Baseball Season

6–0 Hawks in the sixth. Spiders have managed one hit so far.

Edit: Make that 8–0, still in the sixth.

Gave up 15 runs, including 8 walks, to a team with worse record than us.
I am so fed up with Woodson’s excuses and why on earth do you recruit such
poor pitchers Oh by the way two hits are going to win you many games either.

Fill in the blanks.

Weird stuff going on in today's game...starter was roughed up for 7 ER in three innings, and we now have bench infielder Will Gersky on the mound in the fourth. I don't think he's ever pitched in his college career before. Wasn't listening to the broadcast so not sure if something happened that I might have missed.

Regardless, if this isn't a sign of what our pitching depth looks like right now, not sure what is.

Saving the regulars for A-10 games? Those are all that matter at this point.

I guess so...Gersky got through a scoreless inning and now Topolski, a pitcher, is in. Conventional wisdom is to save position players for end of game blowout situations, but I guess not in Woodson's playbook?

Anyway, Hipsman hits a solo homer and it's a 3 run game.

Another one in the L column for the Spiders...11–8 final as Sprague-Lott hit a 2-run shot with two out in the ninth to tighten up the final margin. 18 hits including four homers and six doubles for the Dukes.

What is particularly poor is the performance vs. in-state teams. W&M - L / VMI - L / Longwood 2 L’s / JMU - L. Bottom line 0-5 and being outscored 48-19. Note: Spiders have OOC vs UVA still to play.

Norfolk State too at the end of the season. They're currently 6–20, so maybe we have a shot.

Reduced by donation to baseball today by 4/5, increased it for WBB and gave some to football so it would be matched by Mike Copely. Enough is enough, Woodson is not getting it done.

Spiders open up their second A10 weekend series of the year against a 9-20 (1-2) George Washington team at 3PM EST today. This feels like a series in which we HAVE to take 2 games.

If we take any stock in this morning's Twitter post, Jimmy Starnes appears to be getting the start. He last appeared at the end of last Friday's St Joes game, giving up five runs (three earned) over three innings (though the game was long lost by the time he stepped on the mound).

Still enough time to turn the season around and make the conference tourney, but it starts with taking two here.

Game notes say Argomaniz is the projected starter. Of course the probable starters section of the notes also lists last weekend's dates, so you never know with our sports information folks.

Spiders playing from behind again after giving up three runs in the second. Loaded the bases with no outs via two HBP and a walk. Only gave up a single after that, but GW also got two sacrifice outs to push their runs across. Simply can't give a team freebies like that.

Missed opportunity for a big Spiders inning in the 4th...loaded the bases with no outs but only got one across the plate, and that was thanks to a walk.

Still only 3–1, but Argomaniz gets pulled in the bottom of the 4th. Gave up 5 BB and 3 HBP among 20 batters faced.

9 more outs for the Spiders to tie this game up (or take the lead....). Esteban Rodriguez, in relief for Argomaniz, is through 2.1 scoreless innings.

It will be Jaffe-Kluska-Elbeery in the ninth. Great job by E-Rod to keep us in this thing.

Final line for him: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3K. His season ERA is now below 4.

Nice bounce back for the Spiders. Scored four in the 8th and an insurance run in the 9th to get the 7–3 win. Let's take the rubber game, guys.

This time it was GW that gave up eight walks, plus 13 hits for the Spiders. UR stranded 14, so it could have been a lot bigger margin.

Nice weekend, who knows how good GW is but you have to win the games you should and today we did.

Agreed -- and we will have another chance to win games we should next weekend, as we head to Amherst to take on 4-19 UMass, who are still searching for their first conference win. We should really have two games in our sights.

UVA has two guys in their lineup who are projected top 40 picks in this summer's MLB draft according to MLB Pipeline. C Kyle Teel is slashing .445/.510/.672 (#9 in the country in batting average), while 3B Jake Gelof is slashing .372/.451/.806 with 12 homers and 53 RBI.

Expecting some fireworks today.

We got mercy ruled. Hung in there for 4 innings and then it fell apart.

UVA has embarrassed a number of teams this season (hence their #7 ranking), but yeah...our years when we were nationally relevant are pretty far in the rear-view mirror at this point. Playing sub-.500 ball in one of the weaker conferences in the country.

6 HBP and 5 walks and 14 hits gave the Hoos plenty of base runners. Obviously can't win games that way. Used to attend Spiders at Hoos every year but now it is a laugher game for the Hoos.

I bet vcu will magically beat them at the Diamond in a week or two, like they always do... Meanwhile, we are cool getting blown out by all comers.

Weirather is really fun to watch when he's on. Total nutjob on the mound. Impressive start today, 7 innings of work with only 2 ER allowed. Spiders are up 4-2 heading to the top of the 8th. We'll see if Mathes gets a chance to close this one out.

Looks like we might have found something with Jordan Jaffe - true freshman who has taken the starting 3B job and been one of the better players on the team this year. Slashing .305/.399/.559 with 6 homers and 33 RBI so far, and homered in all 3 games of this series.
