2023 Baseball Season

I believe VCU has been eliminated, as they dropped the first game of the double header today. The best they can do is beat URI in the second game to tie them for 7th at 12–12, but URI would win a head-to-head tiebreaker 2–1.
Best news of the day!

Wildcats had runners on the corners with no outs, but Clifton limited the damage to one sac fly...6–3 Spiders heading to the bottom of the 7th.

Edit: And a solo shot from Jason Neff leading things off pushes the Spider lead to 7–3!

Spiders win, 7–3!

Mason is down 3–2 heading into the bottom of the 9th, so if that holds, the Spiders will move into sole possession of 5th. SLU also won today, so they remain a half game ahead of the Spiders.

Spiders are up 15-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Barring a disaster, we’re going to sweep the best team in the A10. Here I was worried about getting only one win this weekend!

Is this our only sweep of the season? Great timing either way!

Weird game so far through 3. Neff has not been sharp, but Spiders have thrown out two runners at home, keeping it to a 3-0 game. The SLU starter is not missing any bats, but has gone 3 scoreless on only 34 pitches after getting Conklin to GIDP with the bases loaded.

Spiders get one back in the 4th without a hit thanks to a walk, advancing on a fielder's choice (both safe due to error), advancing on a double play, and a wild pitch.

Bleh, SLU strikes back with a run in their half. Argomaniz coming in for Neff with two outs and runners on 1st and 2nd.

Spiders get a second unearned run on an error, balk, and Beal single. 6-2 heading into the bottom of the 6th. The SLU starter just got his first strikeout of the game to end the inning - he's through 6 innings of 3 hit ball and has forced 9 fly-outs and 6 ground-outs (two double plays).

SLU starter Jackson Holmes is back out to start the 8th after getting 3 flyouts in the 7th. We have Hipsman, Jaffe, Mathes up.

This is the time to make a push. Holmes has a 6.17 ERA on the season and letting him get through 8 innings against us would be really bad.

Holmes out of the game with Spiders with runners on second and third. No question have to capitalize here.

Needed more than one run there. One more chance for the Spiders.

Do we not have challenges/replay review in this tournament? Beal looked safe on that groundout.

Losers bracket, here we come. We will either play tomorrow night or Thursday morning depending on the results of the other two games today.

If #2 Davidson and #3 Dayton both win today, they'll play against each other tomorrow, and we'd play the loser of those two on Thursday. If either of them are upset today, we'd play tomorrow.

Our starting pitchers have given up way too many runs in first inning of games. Gave up 3 today so had to try and fight back. Our pitching coach needs to do a deep dive into the stats in each game to see if there is an issue with pregame warmups, etc. Certainly as the home team the starter knows exactly when he will throw the first pitch. As the visiting team not as precise since you don't know how we are going to hit in the top of the first. Anyway something is amiss with the starters in the early innings, especially the first.

Wow, #6 Mason was in great position to upset #3 Dayton, up 4–2 going into the bottom of the ninth with Gartlan for Mason looking to finish off a complete game.

But...first pitch homer to make it 4–3, second pitch double, third pitch bunt single. Runners at the corners with no outs and Gartlan has been pulled.

First pitch Dayton steals second, second pitch results in a passed ball that allows the tying run to score and the winning run move to third still with no outs.

But then somehow Mason gets out of it...strikeout, runner out at home trying to score on a bunt, and another strikeout. On to extras!

Mason got one in the top of the 11th to make it 5–4. Dayton got a double and a walk to lead off the bottom half and were eventually able to load the bases, but couldn't get one across.

Spiders will play #7 Rhode Island in an elimination game at 7pm tomorrow night.

Another matchup against a team we haven't played yet this season...don't love that for our chances, but we SHOULD have the firepower to win this.

Rhody will have their ace, LHP Trystan Levesque, available after he didn't pitch yesterday. We'll have Weirather and Subers ready to give us 7/8 innings and Mathes available for high leverage relief.

Good grief, the first-game bye for regular-season champ St. Joe's did them no favors...being pounded by SLU 20–7 in the 8th.

23–8 final. Fogarty for SLU went 5-for-5 plus a walk and scored all six times.

Winner of our game tonight gets St. Joe's tomorrow at 3.

Good day for the lower seeds, as Mason is blasting Davidson 14–2 in the 7th and threatening to score more.

Let's hope we break that pattern in our game.

Davidson makes a game of it, but GMU still gets the win, 15–11.

Needless to say, the start of our game is being delayed a bit.

WOW. Mathes just hit an inside the park home-run!! The camera work on ESPN+ was pretty shaky, but it definitely was assisted by some poor play from the Rhody left-fielder. Spiders up 3-0 through 3 innings and Subers is looking good so far.

Oh no. Subers throws a pitch in the fourth and immediately points to his forearm. He's pulled from the game and leaves the mound in tears. Hate to see that for a kid who was pitching great for us.

Hipsman solo shot leading off the bottom of the 5th gives the Spiders a 4–3 lead.

Spiders push three more runs across in the 6th thanks to a string of walks and singles with two outs to extend the lead to 7–3.

Rodriguez doing great job, hopefully can finish it out struck put side in 7th
