TAG

Not official yet but with 83% of the votes counted TAG has 60% to his opponent's 40% in the 5th Virginia Congressional District and has been projected as the winner. Good to again have a Spider as my representative in a seat held for a number of years by Spider Virgil Goode (97 to 09).

Moonicorn!

Can anyone tell me another coach who - after 18 years - can have an extremely specific "offense" that can have 4 shot clock violations in the endgame AND also give a no-shot-attempt possession while holding for last shot? Much less have TWO no-shot attempt possessions in tie games at end of regulation in the first 5 games of a season?

Seems to me we've got a MOONICORN on our hands!

No respect: Syracuse protects Bernie Fine

We should never forget how Syracuse and Jim Boeheim enabled the systemic abuse of an untold number of young boys by Bernie Fine, the empowered Assistant Coach of the Syracuse Men's basketball team. They covered it up and then denied any responsibility.

"I believe Boeheim deliberately chose to ignore what he knew was improper behavior, or actually knew precisely what was happening and did nothing to intervene," Davis said in the affidavit."

Bernie Fine sexually several boys for almost 20 years.

with emotional rival JMU moving up into the sunset the Indians once again can become our emotional, as well as, our historic rival...with both squads looking to become relevant in the CAA again...the timing could be perfect this year for a return of this game to it's former Championship and Playoff intensity...

neither squad has been a CAA Champion since 2015...also the year of the Tribe's last Playoff appearance...the Spiders last competed in the FCS Playoffs in 2016!

what Spiders fan wouldn't like to see the 133rd meeting in "The South's Oldest Football Rivalry" take on the intensity and passion of the 2008-2009 games, or just about every game the teams played during the Rocco era?...each had CAA and FCS implications for one, or both squads...it was great football!

and you know what?...the Spiders lead the all time series again at 64-63-5...in fact, Richmond has dominated the "new millennium"...we can never erase, or forget, the way Jimmye Laycock pounded us in the 80s and 90s, but winning 16 of 23 since 2000 and 9 of the last 11 has taken the edge off...

so that's my wish for November 19, 2022 at The Brick House...a game that has CAA Championship and FCS Playoff implications for the Spiders, or both teams...wouldn't that be something!

it has been my pleasure to complete the Countdown again this season...but now let's play some football and see what happens!

2022 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - William and Mary

like Spiders OL Joe More said yesterday, the players coaches and fans have received what we were hoping for since August...meaningful football in late November...

and what could be better than a Championship game between the Spiders and Indians to celebrate the historic rivalry?...if the game lives up to expectations it might remind UR fans of those two unforgettable games in 2008 and 2009...

the Spiders have been playing Championship sudden death games for what seems like weeks...in each win the team has found some way to keep the Championship roll going...I like the squads leadership, character, toughness and confidence...the intensity we see at The Brick House on Saturday may should be higher than anything we have seen in years...

The game will be the Spiders ultimate test against another squad that has also enjoyed a renaissance of their program...but as a great Spider fan and good friend likes to say I expect the Spiders will have "just enough" to win the Championship they have earned!

Enjoy this final regular season Prologue...for the first time in year's I'm looking forward to a post Thanksgiving episode!

The Zone thread

I thought Moon coached an awful game tonight from minute 1 through the final comical play and most of my ire is his being flummoxed by a zone yet again. The zone completely - for the 2nd time in 4 games - lulled UR to sleep and Moon adjusted exactly once, by going small the first time in the first half when it was 12-3 (at the 7 minute mark, 3 points, unreal), when we hit b2b threes, but then immediately Moon subbed someone in and didn't let that lineup try to make a run, despite it being just after a timeout. His inaction to change the flow of the first half and then the last 9 1/2 minutes of the game in the halfcourt against zone was for me the main thing. Yes, guys played badly, but the tone for the game that Moon allowed to be set the first 7 minutes was inexcusable.

Here's an idea: set some screens on guys playing the zone instead of having 4 out passing the ball back and forth up top with Quinn floating about the elbows as the defenders switch off on him.

The small lineup did better against it but ultimately also failed to get almost any good looks after Bigelow's last 3 to put UR up 45-39.. 8 points the last 9:35 of the game (a Bigelow jumper, 2 follows by Burton, a busted play to Nelson.)

A zone shouldn't be that difficult and this was a heaping, steaming pile of Moon.

Wichita State Game Thread - 11/17/2022

Opponent: Wichita State --> Preseason 6th in AAC

"Seven players transferred out in what was a mass exodus following Year 2 for coach Isaac Brown, and things feel rather uneasy in Wichita after the program’s first sub-.500 conference finish in over a decade. Hopes of a turnaround hinge heavily on returning
point guard Craig Porter Jr., a stat-sheet stuffer who seems ready for a breakout season in his third year with the program. And while the portal took plenty from the Shockers, newcomers like Colby Rogers (Siena), Jaron Pierre Jr. (Southern Miss), Gus Okafor (Southeastern Louisiana) and James Rojas (Alabama) are all good enough to be in the rotation or more at this level. Postseason Projection: Better Luck Next Year"

Wichita State 56 Richmond 53 - Five Minutes of Good Basketball and Free Tacos!

wow! tonight was a reality check...I figured the new players and lineups would experience growing pains and I hope that's what we saw again tonight because it was painful!...our effectiveness against the Shocker's zone defense in the first half was difficult to watch...I'm confident things will improve by A-10 time, but we've got further to go than I might have expected...

the second half comeback strategy was exciting again tonight, but once again came up short...we couldn't sustain it for more than five minutes...once the Shockers got themselves back together it never felt like we had a chance to win down the stretch...our defense at the rim disappeared and when we were able to get a stop critical turnovers took away any chance we had to catch up...

highlight clips were hard to find tonight, but there are a few on the link from the 14:42 mark of the 2nd half to the 9:35 mark...they include Isaiah Bigelow's dunk which brought down the house, giving us our first lead since the first seconds of the game...

it could get real ugly for the Spiders on the three week road trip, but that's three more weeks of practice and competition to solve some problems and improve for the A-10 battles...I'm still hopeful!

Analysis through 4 games

I typically wait until a good 4-5 game stretch to start coming to some early analysis/conclusions on the team and players. So here we go.

Burton - playing well. Still adjusting I think to being the focal point and this year is different for him because he doesn't have experienced players making his life easier on offense to get him open shots or opportunities to drive. Confident he will continue to get better and figure this out and become first team all A10 - possibly A10 POY as I expect him to have some big nights given our lack of production on offense elsewhere.

Grace - steady for the most part. Him being out in the Wichita game I think shows how much we need him. He can shoot, he can pass, and I think his knowledge of the offense and where to go helps keep things moving on that end of the floor. I think the Charleston game is the ceiling for Grace, but I don't see any reason why he can't be a guy who scores 10-12 a night on a consistent basis.

Quinn - I didn't expect Quinn to start the season and thought maybe later in the year he would. Right now - he is not playing bad, but he is producing enough I think to be a starter. I think most people expected him to come right in and be scoring double digits, grabbing 7-8 rebounds, handing out 3-4 assists from the top, etc. But fact is - he is slow, has no shot from the outside, and really is only a weapon on the block - which we need, but Mooney usually has someone who can score on the block AND shoot/play off the top - which he struggles with. I think he is a key piece to this team, but for now - I would have him come off the bench and start Bigelow.

Goose - Issue with Goose right now is we are getting nothing from him on offense. And that was okay in years past - when we had enough weapons, but this year - its difficult. I thought he would be able to score 8 a game, maybe 10. But he is not doing that right now and that is where we are having issues - on offense. I think he continues to play 28-30 minutes simply because we need his defense and I don't think Mooney trusts Roche or Bailey enough yet to swap them out.

Nelson - playing as expected for me. I take this as his frosh year, and I think there will be times he will be very good, and other times where he will make mistakes. The good thing is that I think Mooney is letting him play through these, getting the experience, getting the minutes and I think the beginning of the A10 might be an adjustment period for him - but hopefully by mid-A10 season - we see some high level consistency out of Nelson. Like what I see so far and future is bright for him.

Roche - fire and ice. He is coming off the bench to shoot and nothing else. That is not a bad a thing. He will have games where he makes 4 three pointers, and others where he makes none. Still think he is learning the offense and defense is a struggle for him - but he will be a key piece off the bench if this team is to be successful.

Bigelow - someone else said it and it fits. He is a jack of all trades, but master of none. Almost like a Cayo mold, but can shoot. RIght now he is probably our 2nd option on offense behind Burton. Not sure if that is sustainable - but I think the way he is playing, when Grace returns, we might need to try him in starting lineup.

Bailey/Randolph - who knows. I think Bailey gets more minutes as time goes on, but Randolph does bring some energy. But I see close games like where these guys hardly play, and then others where they get 10 minutes or more.

Noyes/Walz - based on last night, with no Grace - and they get 0 minutes - I think the writing is on the wall. They are not a part of the rotation.

Richmond NIL

I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed, but not being physically in Richmond anymore, I was hoping some locals could give any updates on Richmond players having NIL (Name Image Likeness) deals?

Are local radio spots using Gilly and Grant? Is there a new version of “the billboard”, but instead it’s Burton selling me a new car? I would think/hope that there is a market for Richmond bball players getting some local marketing deals (and would be devastated if they’re just going to VCU players…).

Is the Traditional Senior Day Recognition Taking Place Saturday?

I have checked the UR AD Football website and the Game Notes... if there is any mention of it there I missed it...I hope the players and parents get on the field for recognition...

regardless of the "official" celebration, The Spiders Gang plans to recognize the Seniors and Grad Students with the highly anticipated and always fun Spider Gang Senior Day Shout Out...it'll be our 14th consecutive season...since its our first Championship finale Shout Out since 2015 we may have to do a few extra cheers...

all interested fans are invited to participate in this amateur and brief celebration located in parking lot C61...Shout Out time should be around 10:45AM...it's a great opportunity to recognize the players and warm up your leather lungs and Spiders mojo for a Championship afternoon in The Brick House...the Spiders camaraderie and fellowship is pretty special too!

The Worst Call Ever in the 132 Meetings Between the Spiders and Indians?

another year has gone by and heck no I'll never forget and still can't get over this call from the 2016 meeting at Cary Field...

this was early in the targeting era...I'm not sure the official knew what targeting was...the hit still looks legal to me!

calling the TD back probably took away any chance we had to get back into the game...I believe the Spider ejected was DB Brendan Coniker!

lets hope the Championship game Saturday is not scarred by game changing calls like this one...
