Tarrantula

With sadness I read about T’s death in the latest alumni magazine. He was such a big a part of the fun posting on here leading to the National Championship and sweet 16 appearance.
In my travels around the state I had the pleasure of meeting him. He was sitting as a substitute in Henry Co. I finished my case, extended my hand to him and said quietly “Nice to meet you Judge T!” He looked around the courtroom above his readers and then looked back down at me and answered “And who are you.” That afternoon back at the office I received a call from him.
I enjoyed seeing him football games, receiving his made to order Christmas cards and occasional phone calls.

Syracuse Game observations

I have a couple player thoughts, but as with last game, our coaches are not putting us in the position to win.

Exhibit A: We come out flat (again) are in an immediate 14-2 hole. This is a team that hasn't played much together, so coaches should be getting guys ready to go from the opening whistle, yet we throw out our standard lets "feel things out" offense and we are always starting in a hole.

Exhibit B: Last 6 minutes of the game, what the ever loving hell is Mooney doing? He sees our offense just stagnate, the ESPN announcers said on multiple occasions, how they didn't understand why Richmond was not initiating offense, so was the entire world. Yet, Mooney has a front row seat to all of this and just sits on his hands, doesn't call a timeout to set up a play to help his young PG out and poof we watch our lead vanish. And then two games in a row, when Mooney actually designs an end of game play, it is the ugliest no chance in hell of succeeding play. Just embarrassing. He let this young and growing team down.

As for the players:

Burton: Played all 45 minutes. To me his missed FT's at the end and a couple missed finishes, were a product of being tired. Mooney has to get him some rest during the game. Take that away, and I thought Burton had a pretty impressive game, and was an absolute beast on the glass.

Bigelow: I don't think this needs to be said again, but just in case, he needs to start and play major minutes every single game. When Grace returns, Quinn comes off the bench. Dude is a player, he makes big plays all of the time and at critical times.

Roche and Goose: Just go the box score and look at their respective lines and tell me who should be starting. It is pretty damn obvious. Goose had a couple really bad turnovers and Girard torched us and he was certainly one of Goose's assignments. Couple that with the fact that Goose gives us basically nothing on offense. The choice is pretty clear and stark here. Only a matter of time.
Quinn: I thought Quinn had a really nice game, he seemed for the first time comfortable out there. His size on defensive rebounding is solving a huge Mooney issue which is rebounding and not giving up second chance points so readily. Had a couple nice moves on the offensive end as well.

Dji: For everything Dji does well, he couples it with a really bad mistake, which last night was not losing the ball on the fast break. He has little margin for error with Mooney right now and so when he does that, it gives Mooney the green light to sit him down, which he does.

Nelson: Did some really nice things as our PG in the second half but that all evaporated once we hit under the 5 minute mark and we all sat and watched him dribble 25 seconds off the clock each offensive possession and then try to make some rushed move to get a shot off. It's his 5th game, so I place most of the blame on Mooney, he needs to be directive with his young PG, he can't treat him like Gilly and KA and just expect him to make plays, he is not ready for that yet. Mooney needs to help him and coach him in these situations.

Richmond 41 Davidson 0 - Spiders Cruise in Round One

the Wildcats were who most thought they were...an outmanned Pioneer League team with an unusual offense...they ran into a focused group of Spiders today who answered any doubts about the outcome early...

no disrespect to Davidson, but it was great to be able to relax during a game at The Brick House!...

I don't know if we've ever played a #2 seed in the second round, or not, but I do remember 2015's game against Illinois State...maybe we came do something with the Hornets?

ever since last Sunday, I've had this teenage ear worm, and can't shake it, maybe this will help: Login to view embedded media
congrats to the players and coaching staff...an already great season keeps getting better!

look out California, here come the Spiders!

2022 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - Davidson

wow! it's been so long since the Spiders have been in the Playoffs on Thanksgiving weekend, that I'd forgotten how difficult it was to produce a Prologue episode after stuffing your self with food and drink most of the day!...Happy Thanksgiving weekend everyone and I'm hoping it includes a convincing Richmond Playoff win...

despite being so heavily favored, I don't believe the Spiders can sleep on the Wildcats...I expect they'll come to The Brick House with some attitude and something to prove...I hope we're prepared to meet them head on and quickly take care of business...

no California dreaming till the Wildcats are tamed...

enjoy this special and first Thanksgiving and Playoff Prologue since 2016!

Go Spiders!

Happy Thanksgiving Spider Fans

Happy Thanksgiving Spider Fans.

Thankful for the the Forum and all its participants, even though there are definitely times when I wonder why I read this all the time.

Thankful that the players get to take a break from playing and hopefully get to spend time with their families.

And last but not least thankful that it is basketball season!

Wichita State Game Observations

Let me begin with the obvious, our first half offensive performance was completely unacceptable. The blame for that rests in my opinion entirely on the coaching staff. Just a couple nuggets from our first half.

We were 3-17 from 3 in the first half.
We did not attempt a 2 point FG until the under 12 minute time out
17 of our 25 shot attempts in the first half were 3 pointers

Wichita State threw a zone at is and anyone who has watched Mooney coach for the past 18 years, knows that this is one of the areas where he truly struggles. The result of this is that our guys were completely frustrated, "tentative" as Mooney describes it. We had zero energy because literally all we could do on offense is throw the ball around the perimeter and than chuck up some contested 3. Why Mooney didn't call a time out and tell the team, the next person who jacks up a 3, is immediately coming out of the game is beyond me. The team need an ultimatum like that. He did make an adjustment in the second half that was really effective, but you can't play like complete ass for 20 minutes and expect to win games. Adjustments need to come sooner.

Also, Mooney needs to understand, we are not a good 3 point shooting team. Outside of Roche, there is no other player that I would consider a really good 3 point shooter, so to go out and design our offense to almost exclusively in the first half is lunacy.

A couple player observations:

The Great:
Bigelow: Started, needs to start from this point going forward. My god, he was impressive. His poster dunk, probably will go down in my Top 10 of all time best Spider dunks. When Grace return, Grace becomes are starter at the 5, Quinn comes off the bench.
Burton: Strong all around game, a beast on the boards again, his lack of an inside game to get his and our offense flowing is still not there

Serviceable:
Goose: 28 minutes, scored 2 points, 1 board, 1 assist. He is screaming to be replaced in the starting line up BUT
Roche and Dji: Roche was getting abused in the second half by Wichita, they were clearly designing plays to get a favorable match-up against him. Dji: 18 minutes, 1 point, 2 assists a horrible turnover near the end of the game. Goose is not giving us what we need as our starter at the 2, but Dji and Roche aren't doing anything to come out and take that role from him. Our two guard has lots of depth, but right now, no clear number 1 guy, so it remains Goose by default.
Nelson: 5 turnovers, unacceptably high for our PG. It's his 4th game of college ball and he has a load of responsibility on him, so I'm not going to jump all over him. Learning and Growth opportunity.

Yikes:
Quinn: The last play of the game kind of epitomizes Quinn right now, it is painful to watch. Mooney is trying to make him into a Grant/TJ like center and he is just lost out there, particularly on offense. It should be noted that he sat the bench most of the second half when we made our run. That to me was a sign and why when Grace returns, Quinn needs to come off the bench. Maybe he can better into the flow in terms of what we want to do as the season progresses, but he is no where close to that now and it is hurting the team.
