Words to heed

The point is I've never heard CM say their #1 goal is to WIN the A10 Conference Championship every year -- don't just mean tournament but be the team that everyone chases every year in conference season. In fact, do your NCAA work before the tourney even starts. That's what I want to hear him say. Rocco states it each and every year for FB -- their #1 goal is to win CAA conference championship and go to playoffs (take from this that he BELIEVES they will win).

Unfortunately, I hear CM say we want to be competitive and hope to end up with tournament bye. That's mediocre as far as I'm concerned when setting standards and goals for your team -- especially a veteran team like we've had this season. Unfortunately, I don't see the winning expectation from the players that we ARE going to win either but rather they seem to HOPE that they win. Not a good recipe for success, even on your own home court.

I liked the abrasive, potty-mouth Chris Mooney we had the first couple of seasons. Someone in administration must have read him the riot act about his behavior, because it mellowed out significantly after that. I do believe the 10 year contract has been a Quaalude of sorts for him. About the only show of emotion we have seen since the contract extension was the UNC-Charlotte fiasco and meltdown.

I actually think Mooney toned himself down after the Charlotte thing, and that he felt truly embarrassed about the idea that he might have somehow embarrassed the program and university with that breakdown. The hell of it is, I was as proud of him that day as ever. I would have done the same thing, and I think most of us would have. But I think he took it the other way and vowed not to do that sort of thing again. Ironic.

I think his doctor told him to calm down so he would last to collect the 10 years of $1.2 million.

If anyone told him that behavior was poor, they were wrong. And it got us a lot of national (sympathetic) TV coverage.

Someone did because he made a big apology in the next day or so. I think he had absolutely nothing to apologize for. The fire he displayed that day, I think is the type of fire that we would like to see from him and his teams on a much more frequent basis.

It was certainly more fire than taking a sip of water from a Dixie cup every now and then.
