I decided to watch the coach interaction as the outcome of the game began to look obvious. I noticed Coach Jones did a lot of the coaching in the coaches huddle during time outs. So I decided to re read his bio in the program. One thing I noticed it says he helped guide the spider to 6 post season appearances, so they do use CBI as a resume enhancement. The big thing I'd forgotten he is responsible for, among other things, player development, on court coaching, two areas we stink at. His prior job was one year as an assistant at 16-12 Alabama Huntsville??? In high school before that.

If Mooney can't be fired, letting Jones find another opportunity is probably a must.

I agree that Jones seems a prime candidate to take a hike. Didn't he start here as a DOBO? He just kept getting promoted because other guys left, seemingly not because he earned the promotions but just because of attrition. Maybe he legitimately earned some promotions, but it appears that he just was moved up the ranks for no reason. That's a general complaint about Mooney's staff over the years. Much the same way he treats players – seniors start, regardless of ability.

Agree we need new blood, ideas and different voice in the assistant ranks on that bench. Player development needs to be top priority or we'll be in same place (mediocre!) couple years from now.

Not that we should add more to the payroll but many programs have a special assistant to the head coach. They are quietly involved in player development. Would be beneficial considering our current staff is unable to do it.

Not a bad idea, mooney would just hire another yes man though. Gill would have to force him to go outside his comfort zone though and that would require some admission of a problem. so not going to happen

Does anyone actually know that the assistants are unskilled or simply unwilling to dissent? Seems like a thoroughly unfounded claim.

No. Now stop interrupting our bash-fest!!:D

In seriousness, though, I think it's less about them being willing or unwilling to dissent and more about them having known only the Mooney style, either as coaches or players or both. I get that you don't want a staff of guys with totally different basketball philosophies from each other, but it would be nice to have a staff of guys who had a bunch of different experiences from each other. We have a bunch of guys who mostly have had the same experiences, which inherently would seem to limit their base of knowledge or familiarity with different ways of doing things.

I understand what you're saying Eight, but the staff on paper seems fairly diverse. There are no holdovers from the Air Force crew at this point, he only has one assistant who was a former Spider, and the other guys seem to have come to UR without some Mooney connection.

I do think CM may suffer from what I call "smartest guy in the room" syndrome. He seems to hire younger guys who inherently don't have as much experience as him. This is an area I do think he should reconsider.

Huh? Rob Jones hasn't coached anywhere else Jenkins played at Air Force, coached at Princeton in between stints at UR. Lewis has a varied background but never spent more than 2 years anywhere, which seems a little odd. Both lewis and Jenkins came on as Dir of Basketball Operations would a top assistant come on at DBO at UR?

I don't want to pick on the assistants but we have to make serious changes and if you can't/won't make a move at the top you have to make changes in the assistants.

IMUR, the theory that was forwarded was that Mooney is nepotistic about his hiring. I'm not defending anyone's resume, just noting that his staff doesn't strike me as being from a small interconnected set of individuals. Two of the assistants are unrelated to CM from what I can tell (Jones, Lewis) and the other two were former players (Jenkins, Butler). This is more varied than it was early on or has been in recent history.

As noted, I'm not enamored with an approach where a leader surrounds himself with staff who are all less experienced than him. I've always subscribed to the theory that you hire people smarter and more experienced than yourself to maximize your success. I think CM would benefit from having one or more assistants who have been around the block and had success elsewhere. Maybe those people are harder to find than I realize.

Add another assistant? Good God, the suits already outnumber the players who actually play. When did all this happened? I must have been in a coma, seems like it went from two assistants to 18. What the hell do they all do anyway? We might as well as get rid of the walkons and just let the assistants be the scout team.

Hell no don't add any, replace them!!!

DOBOs wear a lot of hats apparently. I searched for a job descripton and found this:
My day to day responsibility is to handle all speaking engagements for my head coach, speak with our team’s academic adviser to check on grade progress, handle all scheduling needs for visiting teams, schedule our games for upcoming season, monitor our incoming freshmen to make sure they have submitted in all their paperwork for admission and NCAA eligibility requirements, assist with our teams leadership session (once a week). I constantly work on team travel which consists of speaking with the bus companies, hotels, restaurants and other companies associated with our travel. I can go on and on but I’m not sure you have enough space for everything I do.
So basically they're a gopher/administrator.

I didn't see anything about rebounding or FT shooting in there did you? :)
