Transfer season

8-Legger, Please be careful with the humor, since there just may be a few on this board you read your post and assume that you really mean it (optimism can sometimes make us blind to reality). And, if you do really mean it, (99.9% unlikely) then please come out and make that clear, rather than making it an ambiguous post (if ever-so-little). Thanks. I, for one, do not need my hopes to be built up, and then dashed. It has happened a few too many times in recent seasons.

We have a handshake agreement with a P5 power forward, who will announce July 31 that he is becoming a grad transfer. By then, we will be the only team in the nation with a free spot. It will be glorious.
Eight, I had also heard this. Admissions is currently processing his application. Should be hearing something in the next two weeks. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hey, guess what...we apparently just lost out on another potential grad transfer. To Robert Morris.

Jordan Madrid-Andrews, 6'8", 240 lb big man from Chicago State.

Oddly, word of our being in his final two came an hour after word of his commitment to RMU.

This guy is worse than Abakah. If this is the quality of transfer we are after at this point I am not expecting any grad transfer we land to actually play, which is probably why he chose to go to Robert Morris.

there are no quality bigs available. I guess we're just looking for a body at this point. any 6'9" kids playing intramurals? we've got a uniform for you.

Hmmm, is there any timeline for a grad transfer, other than the start of classes? It would seem this search for a grad transfer could go on all summer? I'm not that optimistic at this point. I am beginning to think that some combination of Cayo/Ford/Friendshuh would be the best or only option. I really don't see the point in bringing in a Kwesi level option for one year. I really can't see where one of these guys can't at least come in and play some defense for a few minutes without getting beat and/or fouling every time.

Didn't one of our favorite Ramblin' men commit to Syracuse Aug 28th last year? So this could go on a while...

Agreed, if this is the pond we are left to fish in, the only possible benefit for getting a player like this is for practice and for injury protection. Really stinks that we might have to leave a scholarship open again.

Grad transfer I could potentially seeing us interested in & being a good fit if he'll come back east. From west coast but also formerly played at Brown.

Drick Bernstine? His last game was 20 points, 15 rebounds against Arizona. Now transferring from North Dakota.

Not the type of big we usually recruit in that he is extremely physical and not as skilled. He'd certainly give us a different dimension, but don't think he can fit in our offense beyond limited minutes.

Unlike Bernstine who I have seen, I haven't seen this guy. Numbers at Brown were decent, but a deep scrub at Nevada who did little. As noted and like Bernstine, he is a west coast guy.

6th in scoring and 7th in minutes on a very good Nevada team. his production esp rebounding per minutes played is fine. deep scrub? u could get away with calling him a role player. & his #'s at Brown were good not decent, he was their leading scorer. I was just putting him out there but he's a hell of a lot better than what I've seen lately on grad market.

I dont know why PF is not used for anything. He must not be improving at all as a pivot. Does he practice ? does anyone watching practice see him play ? what is the watching telling with specifics thank you not just he is slow .

Hazen to Ball State

Weren't they close last time? Dan Vance 4/12/2016

"After reopening his recruiting, Brachen Hazen listing Richmond, Ball State, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Davidson and Texas as schools of interest."

yeah, I liked Hazen but he didn't fit the spot we need to fill at this time. he couldn't even have been a consideration.

Huh. Hazen is 6'8, we need front court players. I could see if Hazen was a guard that we would want to pass, but we need guys of his size. As far as saving the schollie for Bryce, Bryce has a ton of BCS offers, don't see us competing with that, and if he does end up selecting us, I have no doubt that we find a scholarship for him. Between Paul and the 5 incoming freshman next year, we will have a slot open up.

we're in need of a big for this year. even if it's not at Brachen's level (and he's not a big anyway, despite his height). plus we're not looking to add another body to an already bloated 6 man class of 2021.
I didn't say anything about Bryce. not about him. can't hold a spot for him unless he says he wants it. I agree we'll find room if necessary. but I stand by that Brachen wasn't a consideration.

I know Hazen couldn't have played this year. Our roster is still the same next year though as it is this year. You do bring up a valid point about the size of the 2021 class.

I am thinking we couldn't take in Hazen because we need room for Andre and Kaleb Wesson??

In all seriousness, if Wesson decided to transfer we should 100% go after him. Here are the two main concerns most people might have with that and ones I'll address:

1. What about scholarship space for Bryce?

- Don't worry. If Bryce wants to come, we will have room for him. Not saying we will actively be pushing kids out, but in the world of college athletics today, there could be mutual agreement that it is in both the player and coaches best interest for them to part ways.

2. What about having seven players who will graduate in 2021.

- Yes if Wesson were to transfer and we land him, he'd have to sit out a year which would put him in the class of 2021 with 5 other freshman and Grant who is a RsFr. However, we could redshirt half of this class for next year and like I said before players may think it is in their best interest to leave (like Jesse).

At the end of the day, we shouldn't deny a chance to get a talented player in hopes of another talented player. Wesson really thought highly of Richmond and getting someone who played for Ohio State would be huge. Everything else will work itself out.

you just don't normally do that in one recruiting year in this sport, and not because you'd potentially have 7 guys graduate the same year.

I don't want to call it promises ... but you've explained just months ago to the kid who committed to you why you want him, where he fits in, and typically that you're done recruiting his position in his class if he accepts the offer. you don't recruit over him in the same class before he even gets in the door. it isn't like football where players expect to compete with kids in their class at the exact same position.

unless red shirting has already been discussed as you mentioned. if you've already said that we might ask you to red shirt to help get your ready, then that could be an excuse to bring in another wing. but really, for next year our one need a big body even if it's just a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency big man.

Promises. These kids are promised a scholarship here. They are not promised playing time. And every single one of these freshman has a full year to prove themselves while Wesson redshirts for the year. You are not breaking one single thing to any player and in fact they all should be excited by the potential to add a high quality player to the roster.
