of course. but if he were playing today, we'd find holes in his defense or his ball handling! The all-time great Spider player was Johnny Newman!
I promise you , his defense was superb! He went toe to toe with the great David Robinson (played help defense).of course. but if he were playing today, we'd find holes in his defense or his ball handling!
He is injured. I can’t remember with what. Maybe foot or ankle? Looked to me though like he was at the end of the bench next to HuntIs Ryan Soulis injured? Didn't see him in this game with Queens.
We were 54, 99, and 94 from 2020-2022 in defensive efficiency. Right now, this year, we are 91. So, while I am really liking our defense this year, maybe the last 3 years with Jacob and Grant was better than you think defensively?I will respectfully disagree on a couple points. And none of this should be read to mean I don't appreciate Grant and Jacob. Gilyard is my second favorite all-time spider, behind Kendall Anthony. And Grant's offensive numbers speak for themselves.
BUT... while he was maybe the best off the ball defender I've ever seen, Gilyard was a pretty pedestrian on-ball defender. He didn't navigate screens well, wasn't great at stopping dribble penetration, etc. Golden, in my own opinion, was a pretty bad defender both effort-wise and fundamental wise. His rotations were bad, he really never closed off baseline drives, and he would lose focus on screen hedging (he'd do it well once in a possession, but then on a re-screen would kind of lose the fundamentals). Those teams were elite offensively, and pretty average defensively.
I think the biggest difference I see this year, in a good way, is that we can put a full team of really good defenders on the floor that are good both effort wise and fundamentals wise, along with defensive skill.
Peter Woolfolk, at 6'5, was the guy I remember who battled Robinson and did a great job at times ( yes, with some help from Newman and others).I promise you , his defense was superb! He went toe to toe with the great David Robinson (played help defense).
If I remember correctly, We used a tennisPeter Woolfolk, at 6'5, was the guy I remember who battled Robinson and did a great job at times ( yes, with some help from Newman and others).
Soulis injured his ankle with 28 seconds to go in the VMI game and was in a boot afterwards. Mooney said ahead of the Siena game that he'd be out for a week or week and a half, but it's been over two weeks now.Is Ryan Soulis injured? Didn't see him in this game with Queens.
Well, I think he is out of the boot now. So getting closer?Soulis injured his ankle with 28 seconds to go in the VMI game and was in a boot afterwards. Mooney said ahead of the Siena game that he'd be out for a week or week and a half, but it's been over two weeks now.
The setup I remember was Kratzer behind him, and Stapleton in his lap.Peter Woolfolk, at 6'5, was the guy I remember who battled Robinson and did a great job at times ( yes, with some help from Newman and others).
I have really enjoyed watching this group so far this year. But, But, let's take 2 out of 3 vs Wichita, Northern Iowa, and Florida before we give too much credit to coaching. We saw some of the normal issues down the stretch vs. no. 118 kenpom ranked BC, and could not seal the deal against Colorado. Good opportunity against Wichita coming up to win one vs a decent team on the road.So far, you could argue that this team is greater than the sum of its parts. I don't know that Mooney has ever had a team like that here before.
