CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second time in 12 days, the University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team will take on a national power on the road in front of a national viewing audience.

This time, the Spiders find themselves with the highest ranking in school history at #18 when they travel to Chapel Hill to take on the 17th-ranked Tar Heels of UNC.

Saturday evening’s showdown will be the eighth game against a nationally-ranked opponent in program history, the first win came earlier this month when Richmond went into Durham and toppled the then seventh-ranked Blue Devils, 12-10.

Game time on ESPN3 is set for 7 p.m.

Off and Running

After toppling Duke and Jacksonville, the Spiders extended their program-best start to 6-1.

The hot start shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Richmond closed last spring winning seven of its past nine.

In the past 20 games, the Spiders are 15-5.

Weaving A Tangled Web

If the old adage “defense wins championships” holds true, Richmond is in great shape as the Spiders entered the top-20 showdown with the nation’s fifth-best scoring defense, allowing just 7.14 goals per game.

Senior Tom Monzo and juniors Brendan Hynes and Ryan Dennis have combined for 31 caused turnvoers, while junior Benny Pugh ranks sixth in the country with a 7.08 GAA and ranks tops in the SoCon with a .562 save percentage.

Among the Elite

Junior attacker Mitch Goldberg found himself in exclusive company this week, becoming the first player in program history to earn a spot on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, which honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the country.

This season, Goldberg leads Richmond in points (22) goals (17) and is second in assists (5). He has scored a point in 29 of his past 30 games entering the showdown with the Tar Heels.
