not rushing it or anything, but Coach K is 71. at some point, there's a next coach. and nobody turns that down.
it's either Capel, Bobby Hurley, Chris Collins, Amaker or Woj.
I think the consensus was Capel but that could change now that he's coaching in conference.

Capel signed for 7 years. Maybe he was told he was not the heir apparent

Yeah, no chance Capel takes this job if he was the heir apparent at Duke. He would just wait it out as an assistant in that case. Taking a job like this is not exactly what you would want on your resume if your next stop was HC at Duke.

I think Wojo is the leading candidate.

I don't think signing for 7 years means anything. he'd leave Pitt for Duke tomorrow if the job opened up. all of the other guys will leave their jobs in a second as well given the chance.

You don't want to be the next one after K anyway. You want to be the one after K's replacement gets fired .

Excellent point Octapod. You let someone else flounder and take a beating for a year or two and then come in and save the day.
Or you don’t take it, whoever does is awesome, and you forever regret not having the stones to step into the breach.

Yeah you could go the Matt Doherty route - and end up as the Associate Commissioner for men's basketball in the A-10 after a 3 year head coaching stint at your alma mater and some other intervening jobs...........................

The successes don't happen much if you are replacing an anointed one. Just ask Bill Dooley or Bill Guthridge. Even among K's disciples, there are lot of failures. Fail somewhere else and you can always come back home. Better to go somewhere else and wait for the distress call.

Hey, if it was me - I would go for it. If it is Capel's end game - he might be able talk himself into someone like Collins going there and crapping the bed, and then come in and save the day. K may have said he was coaching for another 8 years, or maybe they did indicate a different coach in waiting.

Guthridge did manage to get to the Final Four twice in his three years of coaching.

I know. NCAA tourney all 3 years. Final 4 first and last. Got upset by Harold "The Show" and Weber State the 2nd year. Yet, the fans wanted another coach. You don't want to follow a legend.
