IF we do consider King Rice - then he must bring these guys back to teach our bench some celebrations.

I was pretty high on Rice, then as noted he cooled off a bit. Monmouth does seem like a pretty tough spot to win, and he has done pretty well.

I don't think our non playing bench is an issue, they are pretty darn enthusiastic. I mean that Kulju expression it priceless.

As someone said, a bowl of rice would be a spark for our program at this point. I wouldn't be disappointed with King Rice having a go. I remember right after college I would be messing around playing 1:1 with my buddy. I would beat him like a drum and say I was King Rice and he was Wojo :).

I know we've mentioned him in passing, but damn we should really make John Becker either our top focus or close to it. He's 53, in his 11th year at Vermont, a GW grad. He has only finished first, second or third there every year. He's won the regular season five years in a row and is there again this year. He makes less than $500k a year. His winning percentage there is 71%.

Sounds like competing to me! Sign me up!

Also, Matt McMahon of Murray State. Won the regular season there four times in six years, has them ranked and 16-0 in the league this year. Makes $500k a year. Maybe in line for a bigger job, but who knows.

And Matt Langel at Colgate. Took him six years to get fully up and running there, but then finished second and won the last three Patriot League regular seasons, is in first again this year.

I don't know...
His SRS was only higher than 10 of Tarrant's 12 seasons for 5 out of the last 6 seasons (including this year)
Leaves room for doubt...

He's been mentioned more than in passing. I like him too. Many on this board get enamored with retreads and longer shots. Not immune I'd love for instance to get a Kenny Atkinson or Chris Fleming here or John Beilein back - but those fall into latter category admittedly. Odds are highest we get a sitting head coach from a lower level conference.

Becker would be near top of list for sure and someone right in our wheelhouse. But there r many good options. We will have no shortage of suitors and why anyone is too worried about that I don't get. The only concern would be working with Hardt imo.

Also keep eye on Griff Aldrich from Longwood.

Definitely a Becker fan.

I've looked at Langel, but I'm concerned with how long it took him to start winning. Six losing seasons (only one of them was even above .500 in Patriot play) takes a lot of patience...doable at Patriot level, but we need to win sooner than that. Certainly could be a different pattern at his next stop, but it's a concern.

I just want to get back to being a stepping-stone job again. If we are having to fend off job-offers for our coach every 3-4 years, we are doing somethings right again.

Anybody that comes in with the mindset that this is their 'dream job' or 'last ride' is a big red flag to me.

Agree Mo 2.0, unless you get lucky with a Mckillop or Tarrant type - I am good with a guy super succesfull in a lower league, that needs to maybe step up a bit in the A10 and get to some NCAA's at this level in order to be considered for a P5 move. That works for me. Wash, rinse, repeat.

How about Longwood coach Aldrich? If they make the NCAA tourney this year, I expect his name to be popping up for some jobs, especially since he was so successful with so many transfers. With that being the future of recruiting and filling out rosters, looks like he might already have a head start in that area for a program looking to turn around quickly.

I like Aldrich a lot. Would be thrilled with that hire.

Really impressed with Aldrich and what he has done at Longwood. That place had zero history of success or interest and now he has them poised to get an NCAA bid.

Could pay him $300k a year and it would double his salary...and we'd be saving $1M a year.

I mentioned Aldrich months ago. It wouldn’t even matter if he makes NCAA tho that would get others attention. That comes down to a 1 shot league tourney. But what he’s done even b4 this season at Longwood who was a bottom of D1 type team is impressive. Also has a very unique backstory. Check out article...

Aldrich is intriguing. Did take him 4 years to get traction this year. As much as I have blasted Mooney for lacking in transfer portal, a one year success hit in portal and production is a little worrisome in that there is not a track record.

Mabye we pay him 400,000 per year, with a 900,000 bonus for each NCAA tournament appearance. That would be some motivation.

Agree sman, I think he does have the possibility to be a star, but (like the guy at Wyoming) there are options that are proven at lower D1 levels. Similar to JB, I like guys that were head coaches and succeeded at every stop.

1 good year in 4 doesn't sell me. I expect we'll have stronger options.

Fair & we’ll have other good options for sure. He’s not my top guy but not that far either. But can’t look at that stuff in just a vacuum imo. They finished 9th 8th 9th & 10th in league before he took over. It was a total cultural shift at Longwood. U can do a good job in some places without a great record. He’s been building it.

he might be amazing. I've never seen him coach and I haven't noticed Longwood. I'm flying blind here. but it's risky to hire a guy with 1 winning year. I don't think that's a risk we need to take.

At least he knows how to bring in good transfers right away, I’ll give him points for that!

you didn't answer the question, though you don't have to.

I don't understand anyone complaining about Mooney's lack of prior success now suggesting the Longwood coach.
Fair point. I haven't followed closely but Longwood was basically the bottom of the barrel for a D-1 program and he has built it up nicely. I agree, I think we will have better options, guys with a much better track record to go off of. And fair point on the Mooney comparison. He does have 4 times the amount of D-1 coaching experience that Mooney has when we hire him though.

umm, actually u brought it up. Shouldn't u responding to me first lol. I've never been 1 to bring up the AF history but I only did bc it was surprising to hear that from u re: griff aldrich especially given how happy you've been with Mooney. As 8 legs mentioned up until just a few days ago.

But to answer your question...NO. Tho personally I think situations r different and not apples to apples. Anyway not a big deal I was just busting on u a little.

Hopefully we can debate the merits of coaching candidates and have the excitement of a new coach overall to talk about in a couple weeks.

To be clear, I'm not advocating Aldrich. I think we can do better. But literally, you give me any high school coach in RVA at this point who wins and I would take them over Mooney. I'll take literally ANYONE, but Mooney. But, I think we will choose well and get a coach who is worthy and that we can all rally around to rebuild our program.

Can't wait for April.

What we need to do now is finish strong, hit Hardt and Hallock with e-mails, make your voice heard.
