Jason Nelson Enters Transfer Portal, Commits to VCU

My take on this is that this was just a mismatch and Jaynel will do better in a different system.

My sense (fed by a little bit of inside rumor) is that Jaynel felt he had lost some support from Coach and Coach felt Jaynel had not bought fully into the system.

As he struggled, Jaynel gravitated to what he does naturally and a bit away from the system (not necessarily defiantly etc. but just tried to be more of himself in his view etc. and play freer and with more confidence). In the end, I think he's a guy who is going to be happier and better in a less restrictive offense where he's just asked to make plays (and not so much to make a specific "correct" plays which simply did not come naturally to him). Defensively, have to hope for him that the offensive and confidence struggles leaked over into defense - - - but I am not so sure. I think he will still struggle defensively even as he finds his offense and can prove he can run a team. He will need to be very careful, hoever, in picking his opportunity in order to max out his chances of success. He needs to really understand how the coach wants to use himetc.

Philly, I could buy everything you said there. And if Nelson hours somewhere else and flourishes, I would hope it's a wake-up call to Mooney that he said change his offense. Many of us have said for years that it turns players into robots. None who were super talented really have jumped ship this early until now.

Of course, I know it won't be a wake-up call, but allow me to dream.

I’ll be shocked if Smith is shorter than Nelson. I feel like the videos posted before and when he signed showed him slapping backboard on layups and such. Not that means he’s a giant but Nelson was nowhere near that. Nelson was like 5’8”.
tbh I’ve seen him twice at the last time was when him and Collin were at the RC. Collin is about 6’6ish and he didn’t look it then. It was mentioned to me that Smith was smaller than Jaynel by a couple of our guys playing pickup. Maybe I misunderstood and they were implying body type/size but still do not think he’s 6’2 like some sites are saying. I would love for him to be a lil taller just like most everyone else.

I guess that you can please some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time!

I always thought Mooney was 6'6". he looks substantially taller than Tanner.

If I knew how to post a pic I would post Dji and coach and they are pretty much even height and Dji is 6’6 buuuuut they still list him as 6’5🤦🏼‍♂️ give us our inch 😂
so then Tanner is probably really 6'4" - 6'5".

Gilly ain't undersized no more.

Pic looks a little slanted favoring Mooney. Look at the floor. And, maybe Colin has his head titled back a little? Guess we will see, but either way, I like Tanner's game a lot, and even if he is "only" 6'5, will be able to do a lot for us.

I just levelled the pic in ppt and it's closer. Mooney's still a little taller but not by much.

I was a big Nelson supporter the first half of last year, and gave him the benefit of the doubt longer than I probably should have, but I don't see him at VCU. I didn't see him getting big minutes here if he stayed, and I don't see it at VCU either. If he goes there, and plays even 20 minutes for them, I don't see how that makes them nearly as good as last year. From Baldwin to Nelson? That's a big drop off.

it's a drop off but he's got some talent, he's got 3 years left, and they need bodies. they could do a lot worse.

Honest question here because I genuinely don't know - are we re-recruiting Nelson to come back? My assumption is no as it seems like bridges may have been burned. But it seems like I hear about guys fairly regularly that do end up back at their original school.

If so, who you suspect burned the bridge? What made you say that bridges may have been burned?

What are your feelings on Jason Nelson’s entry to the transfer portal?
He’s obviously been a great teammate and he’s a terrific kid. We’re sorry to see him in the portal but we wish him the best of luck. It’s just a different time, and I just wish him the very best because he’s been a great teammate and a great member of our program.

Did you receive an explanation from Jason on his decision to leave?
I think that would be between him and me.

That doesn't really read like something from a coach trying to convince a player to come back.

A few reasons - the reduced role late in the season, the lack of our name showing up on his list of mentions, the disgruntled uncle posting online. I have no inside knowledge of this situation, just saying it seems unlikely but I was curious.

So if I understand all this correctly, Collin is 6'4, Trevor Smith is 5'8, Dji is 6'7.

I do think we need to grow everyone's hair taller :):):)
If you include fans, I'm not sure that would be easy for all of us...

I totally understand your frustrations but it is like pouring oil on the fire ahead of time. Where did you find his uncle’s messages? Just want to know, thanks.

So I have a question. If a player enters the portal and decides to return, can the team decline? Or since he is on a scholarship is that binding over the portal? SF I’m looking to you here, feels like this would be something you may have some info on

To be brutally honest, my opinion is that Nelson's landing destination will depend upon the knowledge and research done by the program offering him.

If a program/recruiter relies mostly upon reputation, highlight film, and perceived potential, Nelson may get a high major offer (thus the alleged 30-school interest). If a program actually watched him play last year, or properly assesses his current readiness, his options are likely to be very different.

I do not see him playing much at a P6 school until there is huge development. That will take time if it happens at all.

Yes. Once you enter the portal your team is under no obligation to take you back if you reconsider.

Yes they can decline…also schollys aren’t 4 yr deals. They are on a year to year basis. A lot of people don’t realize that.

He said he was sorry to see him in the portal and I think it would be unbecoming for him to say come back in an interview. Players do enter the portal and end up returning, I don't think that is the case here, but I do think if he said he wanted to come back, we would take him back.

Agree, and If he only had one P6 offer (Vandy) out of high school, I wonder what in the last 2 years could have made P6s decide they want to pursue him now.
