Game Thread: VMI 11/7

Biggest halftime takeaway is that our system needs to generate open looks for our best players (Burton, Quinn, etc.). Until that backdoor feed from Quinn, TB hadn't gotten a clean look off a settled possesion - need to improve that in 2H. Had some issues with this early last year too.

Pretty much as I expected. Very disjointed effort on both ends of the floor. Can’t hit a free throw to save their ass. I see flashes of what the team could be, but poorly coached as usual. Grace is still useless. Point guards have a ways to go, but I see the talent there. Bigelow is the best new player. Quinn has more fouls than points. Good thing VMI is terrible.

By the way, the scoreboard doesn’t work as usual. Seems some one would test it before the first game.

maybe there shouldn't be 200 D-1 games on the same day. 600 refs is a big ask, clearly these guys are not up to it.

that said, UR is boxing out but not following through and exploding for the rebounds - too many rebounds coming down to VMI's little guys. VMI probably has under 10 ponts on initial possessions and most on second/third chances.

Shooting has been dreadful.

CoachK, relax — you’re retired now.

They need to feed Burton. We are throwing up shots from 25 feet. Guys that can’t make a free throw are jacking it up from all over the place.

This team has a lot of new pieces so you have to expect some early growing pains. The missed FT aside bc that should not be a factor for new players.

But what they need the first few weeks is Burton to carry them and unfortunately he’s shooting like crap tonight. 3-11 (1-7 from 3) and hasn’t sniffed the FT line yet. That needs to change.

Tb will be fine imo and still will likely get a tiny double double

Bigelow making a pretty obvious case to start at the 4 moving forward. Love his versatility. Grace has been successful off the bench in the past and think that's where he'll be most effective again this year.
Bigelow has been affective off the bench, may stay that way.

My point with Burton is they need him to really play well early against these lower level teams.

I agree he will be fine. But I was expecting more like ~25 from him tonight. It’s not that he isn’t playing ok (defense and rebs solid), it’s just that he isn’t shooting like he usually does.

Agree that Grace might play better coming off the bench. He was always a great spark for us last year.

Roche will get more comfortable too. And he will be a late game player for us bc he can shoot FT’s.

UR took 21 FT attempts before Burton got to the FT line. He didn’t get there until a 19 point lead with 5:36 left in the game.

Mooney has to solve that. We need Burton to be aggressive going to the basket with or without the ball. Run a couple of plays early designed to get him to the rim.

Nelson has to solve for these FT struggles (1-6 so far). It’s going to be tough to win close games against good teams if he isn’t making FT’s. Because either we are going to give games away at the FT line or he won’t be on the floor at the end when we need our primary ball handler out there.

Hopefully the first half offense was just the team shaking off the rust and we play more like the second half going forward. Looks like we have good offense off the bench, not nearly as much a drop off as previous seasons.

Hard to tell if our defense was good or if VMI offense is just that bad. seems like we did a bit more switching at points than we did last season.

Also, the ESPN+ stream was horrible for me. Constantly buffering and dropping. The commercials worked fine though, haha.

UR showed flashes but VMI was awful. They had a decent number of open looks from 3 and shot 21% from downtown, which included the last-second 3 to backdoor cover. Granted, it may have been part of the defensive plan to leave a couple guys open.

Spiders played better in 2nd half and Nelson in particular got going. I feel like this team has the ability to run IF they can rebound well enough. Lots of guys who can play uptempo. Hope they use the depth, the length and press and run at least a couple stretches each game.

Quinn needs to be on the low blocks. He is an all American when he can turn and drop it in the basket from three feet,(as he did three times tonight) especially against guys 6'8 or shorter. He will never be either TJ or Golden from the foul line or top of the key. Make the system fit the players not the other way around.
