Game Thread: VMI 11/7

Come on now EL, this is the new Mooney, that recruits every year, adapts, maximizes the portal. What can go wrong?
Why do I feel like you should write lyrics for "New Moon" to the tune of "Blue Moon"?

Or maybe I will...if we start 7-0...

Here are our last seven Robins Center openers. We haven't really dominated an opponent in a November home-opener since 2014, when we beat Radford by 18. I actually really like this year's team, but let's face it – we have mostly sucked in season-openers for seven years. I need to see evidence that we are different this year before I predict a blowout. I'll just settle for a W.

2021: Beat NC Central 70-60 (we were losing 36-31 at the half)
2020: Beat Wofford 77-72 (solid win, but was actually a Dec. 7 game because of COVID, so we had a few games under our belt already)
2019: Beat St. Francis PA 100-98 in overtime (we were down 10 with 1:40 left in regulation)
2018: Lost to Longwood 63-58 (bleh)
2017: Lost to Delaware 76-63 (I've erased this game from my memory)
2016: Beat VMI 72-69 (way too close)
2015: Lost to JMU 87-75 (this was truly awful)

I still vividly remember Mo (Not just him) going scorched earth after this game.

Halloween is over, I didn't need to witness such horror this morning!

I want to see Randolph, Noyes, Walz, and Dread on the court with at least 2 minutes to play.
Can't Randolph & Walz redshirt if necessary? Actually, so could Roche, just can't imagine him not being needed...

I want to see all 5 starters on the bench with 10 minutes left...
or at least a lineup of Grace, Big, Crab, Roche, and Dji...

I'm done with "developmental" redshirts not including the expanded roster Covid year. they can transfer any time without sitting anyway. no guarantee you get them their 5th year.

Randolph has a lot of competition at the 2/3 for playing time but who knows.
I think we'll need Walz at times this year. let's get his feet wet.

I agree. But only if 30 minutes in a season not 3.
But I still think the roster is working the kinks out of the Covid impact.

I’m guessing the line opens at Richmond -12.
Anything less than that fellas and you will see me going big to start the season!!
All season go Big … thinking -14 but since I abstain from UR bets and also live in the Old Dominion have no Spider betting options anyway ….

Don’t know to much about VMI but looking at their roster 10 of 14 guys listed as guards. Looks like what 23 said about playing uptempo. Anyone else know anything about the team?

Per Newspaper;

Nov. 7, VMI: picked last in SoCon; first-year coach Andrew Wilson (ex-JMU assistant); expected to have eight healthy scholarship players (five of them freshmen) at UR.”

I’m disappointed there weren’t more posts today.

Cant wait for the game on Monday. I’m not sure if we should expect a national championship but I can’t wait to see the potential of this team! Let’s go!!

I am looking forward to seeing what we have also. I really liked the old team, but looking forward to seeing some fresh faces after 6 years.

100% agree. Wouldn’t have shocked me if 2020 team made the final 4 which only proves the admiration I had for old team as well.
But I’m excited to see players like Quinn and Grace get some national attention and see if burton plans to play defense this year!

Good morning everyone‼️ GAMEDAY…
It Begins Here We Go GIF by hero0fwar

21-22 Season - Bucknell we won by 31.
20-21 Season - Beat Mason by 20, St. Joes by 23, St. Mary's MD by 41.
19-20 Season - Cal St. Northridge by 28, McNeese St. by 20, BC by 20, St. Joes by 32, GW by 22, LaSalle by 27, UMASS by 24,

So looking back - we got some history of winning by 20 or more. Agreed - our home openers have not been kind, so I would probably take VMI and the points. I think it will be close. I think Spiders win easily, but like I said - I expect it to be close at halftime - maybe we are only winning by 5-6 points. Then 2nd half we take lead and win by 14. We probably go up by 20, but some late spread busting buckets by VMI bring the total down.
