Fire Mooney

I sent a polite note to the new president today, asking he change coaches so we can return UR basketball to the same level of excellence as the rest of the university. I am sure that will make a difference. 😎

I also have a fraternity brother who is close friends with a member of the B of T. I politely asked him to tell her that Mooney needs to go, and that she needs to share that opinion with other B of T members.

The Left Coast chapter of the Fire Mooney Brigade has been activated.

Went to the mailbox this afternoon....right on top of the stack was an envelope with return address of 'Spider Athletic Fund'.

Getting donation mail from Spider Athletics right now is the equivalent of getting political campaign literature. I showed a lot of physicality and fluidity as I swiftly evaded defenders to the trash can. "No question".

You should have sent it back with your spare change.

I’ll get one of my dads donation letters and reply with a picture of my junk. That will get there attention, under that I’ll have a sternly worded letter about why they should fire Mooney.

I have a sneaking suspicion they may not take you seriously.

With each day that passes - do you think that just simply means Mooney will be back, with or without an extension?

I would have to assume if the expectations were clear and set at a meeting with Hardt early in the year and they were not met - then why wait in getting rid of him. I don't like firing coaches mid-season, but once season is over - no point in waiting. Get the search process moving for a new coach ASAP so they can get in and start recrutiing.

But with each day that passes - just makes me think (as my original guess is there is no way he gets fired) he will be back, cause why would you wait???

If they are gonna fire him I would imagine they are waiting to see if any of the seniors decide to come back. It doesn’t make sense at all to keep him either way but if a few seniors do come back it probably makes sense to UR to keep Mooney. That being said no matter what happens I am 99% sure he is the coach next season. Someone on here mentioned if before but it’s very possible they keep him knowing that we will be very bad next year if none of the seniors return and then use the bad record to justify firing him. If that’s the case that’s pretty screwed up and if I were Mooney I’d probably just try to take another job at this point.

school and donors might not have an appetite for eating the salary.
school and donors may also give him credit for last year and view this year differently than this board, i.e. things out of a coach's control had an affect on unmet expectations (Sherod, Crabtree, Golden, Francis, etc ...)

For what it's worth, Michael Shafer was let go on Sunday when the 2019 A10 tournament ended. The team lost in the tournament the previous Tuesday. Aaron Roussell was hired on April 2.

No. I was just holding out hope that we let him go with a year or 2 left on the deal. ha

Am going to fix your last paragraph.

Hey, also we have never had a vaccine developed in under like 5 years. Sometimes you can't just rely on the past. Let's break the mold here.
Exactly. This is the maddening problem with our athletics department. “We can’t do that — we’ve never done that before!”

Ok. I mean we literally train a bunch of students to be leaders and do things that have never been done before, but we can’t take our own advice? It’s pathetic.

Then you have morons like John Feinstein getting into Twitter arguments this week defending Mooney and other coaches who were let go after one or two DECADES using the argument “Who are they going to find who’s any better?”

Gee, I don’t know — someone else? I’m so sick of that argument as it relates to Mooney. Anyone who thinks that the best we can do here is a nice guy who misses 10 straight tournaments is delusional and part of the problem.

Yes. If any change happens, i highly doubt it would occur before the A-10 tourney is over.

I think there's way to much wishes, hopes, and optimism. I will be shocked if he's let go. The justification is there and many years overdue, but it just doesn't seem in the cards. Maybe we get a surprise????

I think even if Seniors decide to come back - this is an ideal time to cut ties. New coach will get some good players (assuming some seniors return), so this gives him some talent to work with in year 1, while being able to go out and recruit his own players. Not to mention - if Seniors do return, we will likely have more scholarship players than normal (like most teams do with seniors returning under COVID rules) - so the new coach could afford to push some younger Mooney guys out the door if they don't fit his style and play.

As much as I think this shouldn't matter, I think this is correct. I'm pretty confident that UR's approach is going to be that most staff won't be dinged during this Covid window, regardless of performance or relative importance.

As I said yesterday, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A REASON. There should be a reason "to" instead of a reason "not to".

I agree, I'm just sharing what I know of UR's internal philosophy about how they are trying to navigate employees of the university throughout Covid. This would certainly be an exception-oriented case.

Love seeing Moliva back on the board! I think he smells the blood in the water :).

Little afraid could be disappointed, but I like the shark action. Let the March Madness begin!!

Perusing the VCU board yesterday night, one guy said "the SpiderNation Board could melt Iron Ore right now". I just couldn't miss out on that.

Wainwright is as close as we have come to "firing a coach" - usually it has been at the end of a contract. Contract not renewed is as tough as it gets. Mooney has had years and millions but to "powers that be" that "appears" to make no difference. It should.

If we can’t get a better coach we should just close down the whole program. We’re pouring resources like crazy into this program. We didn’t need a practice facility to finish 8th in the conference or to not make the NCAA tournament any times in the last decade. I get it, we’re not likely to replicate VCU’s exact success of 8 tournaments in 10 years (or whatever their number is). No one in the A10 is (not even VCU). But the point is that for the invested capital we should get some return. Once every four years was the measure set by our SID. It’s pretty damn reasonable. If it has been 5 years I wouldn’t be upset. It’s been 10. We’re driving 80 mph at night without headlights while changing lines running a red light and some people are saying we’re crazy to question whether we have the right guy at the wheel. We can do better. Or maybe better said, we can’t do much worse with what we’re paying. This isn’t a Fordham situation.

Well said DT. And in a couple weeks Hardt will wake up and peruse this board and see no more posts and smile and roll over and go back to sleep.
Lol, I am surprised this board hasn’t been canceled yet. We are a little tougher than Dr. Seuss ever was.

I was wondering today about when the best time to fire Mooney would be. Our administration usually bungles everything, but announcing it mid-day during Sweet 16 or Final Four would certainly be the best way to bury the story and have it not be very national news that gets picked up

10 year anniversary of the sweet 16 run. I’m sure that’ll somehow be used as a reason not to do it...

Why would he look for a new job when he keeps receiving welfare checks from UR athletics?
