We could just buy him a job somewhere else that he could commute to and still live in Richmond. You know like Mr. Gill.
Totally worked at Washington State with Dick and Tony Bennett. The people at Niagara were thrilled with Pat after hiring him from Le Moyne; UR would be a great opportunity to restart his career. He could go bigger, but hiring JB to give his son a chance to restart here is a phenomenal possibility.
You’ve been in the biz Wood, do you think Hardt feels any substantive pressure to make a change?Totally worked at Washington State with Dick and Tony Bennett. The people at Niagara were thrilled with Pat after hiring him from Le Moyne; UR would be a great opportunity to restart his career.
I'm not confident but I'd hope Hardt knows he has to make a move to retain a very unhappy fan base. Hiring the Beileins would be a tremendous jolt to a program one step short of life support.
My friend who is somewhat connected to the B of T says the school loves Mooney because he graduates kids and runs a clean program. But he also said if enough people get mad it might make a difference because they don't like to have the university seen in a bad light by the alums. We'll never have a better time to pull the trigger, a lame-duck president can take the heat and it won't bother him at all. You’ve been in the biz Wood, do you think Hardt feels any substantive pressure to make a change?
Interesting perspective, thanks for sharing. My friend who is somewhat connected to the B of T says the school loves Mooney because he graduates kids and runs a clean program. I'd really like to hope there is some back-channeling to Beilein. I have to think if he was amenable, especially with Pat as an assistant, they'd be more apt to pull the trigger.
Should have sent it back with a very direct letterYou should have sent it back with your spare change.
Is this better or worse than what he is leaving?Dreaming that Mooney will be fired? UR does not fire coaches - Latrelle Scott is resigning again..............

Out is right. Out is what I’ll be if we go Patriot leagueThe Patriot league is the only answer. Out!
I think it’s highly probable that UR doesn’t see the problem as seriously as the fan communities you mention see it. I’d actually love to know how they gauge that, it sounds like they do some select outreach but their sampling methodology seems strange to me.They're not even listening to their fanbase (aka customers). Not even trying, actually. Either that, or they're listening and just saying, "yeah whatever". Who runs a business like that?? Bob saying, "we'll just get new fans" is symbolic of the mindset in the RC. That's making it worse. A LOT of their customers have written letters, sent emails, called the RC, called in to ESPN950, stopped writing checks, stopped buying tickets. They continue to ignore it, ignore it some more, and then finally it boiled over with the billboard.
They think it's just 10 asshole fans getting together to stir up trouble just to be mean. If you were to poll Mooney's approval rating with UR's customer base, where would he be sitting right now? 10-15%?
Every single men's hoops social media page (facebook, twitter, instagram, etc) is filled with comments from folks that have had enough. And those BoT members are full of it. Mooney is not the only person in america that can run a clean program and graduate kids. That's just a smoke screen for the real reason....
Might be time to get the band back together for a reunion tour....
Well, they’re paying him like a guy who went to back to back ncaas and made sweet16. Maybe there’s a buyback program we’re unaware of.I think the administration is just happy to say that we have a basketball team and as long as the team and coach don’t bring any bad publicity to the school then they are happy. Now, we as fans definitely see 7-20 against our hated rival as bad publicity but the higher ups and .edu folks don’t care about that. And if they don’t care and don’t want to hire the best coach available that’s their prerogative...just don’t tell us that we are doing everything we can to compete for A-10 championships because we aren’t. The fact that Mooney has been here for 16 years and never finished first in the A-10 tells you we aren’t really serious. That we have paid him so much is the amazing and truly unbelievable part. We could have gotten this production from many coaches at a far lesser expense. We are paying top dollar to a guy to produce basic results that would be expected with any hire of any sport (good person, graduates players).
I included the link because I did not want to include the entire article. I did not cite all the categories and I would hope there is an actual plan that UR alums could actually read. This article seemed to suggest that the plan was in a working phase in 2019. I am sure that most of it applies to the formal document.Just another bullshit word salad. You'll notice that there's nothing in there about "winning championships". Competitive success? What the F does that even mean? It's such a broad term that the AD can put out any crap product and still claim competitive success as an objective hit. "We were competitive. Check."
If you want to compare, go and take a look at the Tribe's plan. They specifically say win championships and even state a goal win X number by such and such date.
Maybe if I wear my white sneakers it won't rain today.Maybe if they paid Mooney less I wouldn't get requests to send them money so often. Will be awhile before I write them another check.
Oh, it will be raining somewhere so you go ahead and wear what you like.Maybe if I wear my white sneakers it won't rain today.
Yep - THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A REASON.Excuses! Excuses! More excuses! Every year, more excuses! Let’s just keep making excuses for ten years in a row! Maybe for another ten too, what the hell!
Always like to point out that I am not a UR alum, but a big college basketball fan and that is why I buy tickets to UR games. The Robins Center is a great place to take a family for a game and my wife and daughters begrudgingly came along at first. Now UR is my wife's favorite team to follow and my oldest daughter will graduate from UR next year. So obviously there are benefits from having a sporting event other than pure wins and losses.
Since I am a "new fan", I also have the perspective as an outsider and what I see is a missed opportunity. UR has been outmaneuvered by another school in Richmond and it is simply the athletics department leadership has been terrible for years. I am not a UR historian, but it seems like there was good guidance by Jim Miller up until he exited and his parting gift was a 10 year contract to CM. That gift is what got the men's basketball program to where it is today and seems to be the decision cannot be undone. Mooney should have never gotten a 10 year deal and definitely isn't earning the money that he makes. You do not get paid a premium salary to produce no conference titles (regular season nor tournament). The move to the A10 was a move to improve the basketball profile. It has obviously failed and it has failed because the coach and athletic department haven't delivered.
Do you know that there is a Strategic Plan for athletics? What is on that plan? Is it evaluated? Hardt talked about the plan in 2019 (https://richmondspiders.com/news/2019/8/27/general-from-the-ads-desk-john-hardt) and the following 3 elements were included :
Seems to me the basketball program failed all the the above this year and thus change has to happen.
- Competitive success will be a top priority.
- We will be committed to the careful stewardship of institutional and environmental resources, and of the relationships that provide the foundation of our Spider community. We will work to increase alumni engagement as well as to inspire increased donor support for the University and Spider athletics.
- We will be committed to the highest standards of personal and professional integrity. We are role models as well as leaders; and we will be good campus citizens. We will act with character, honesty, and in compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA. We will do things the right way!
But I am just an outsider. Good luck Spider Nation.
Actually SpiderRick you and others on the Forum are the reason I put that item in. None of you are inspired to donate and many have eliminated your financial support.Well you are wrong about one thing. They definitely got the " inspire increased donor support for the University and Spider athletics " right. Seems like every other week I get an email asking for money for our poor little school.
Exactly. If they had inspired increased donor support sufficiently, they wouldn't keep asking.Actually SpiderRick you and others on the Forum are the reason I put that item in. None of you are inspired to donate and many have eliminated your financial support.
I dunno. I think they're on autopilot. Just keep asking and whatever comes in is mo money for them to pretend to be administrators.Exactly. If they had inspired increased donor support sufficiently, they wouldn't keep asking.
You are not alone, no one cares about the other sports either.Have we been highly competitive (ranked or champions) in anything the past 5 years? I don’t follow anything other than bball or football so honestly have no clue.
Lol Chop, they never stop asking for money either way.Exactly. If they had inspired increased donor support sufficiently, they wouldn't keep asking.
Point I made earlier about Latrelle Scott was that while he was our head football coach he was under scrutiny for being pulled over for impaired driving. Hopefully he has overcome those issues and wish him well. It was agreed that he would resign. But even in that case he was not fired. Richmond does not fire coaches(guessing if there was a case where behavior was egregious enough that could change). But Mooney will not be fired. Might as well make peace with that. One can only hope some tangible goals could be implemented about wins and losses but I am not holding my breath. Accountability as defined by UR is more about being a "nice guy" than being successful. Mediocrity on the court is status quo.
