Fire Mooney

It’s amazing to me how none of you complainers realize the impact of your statements.
And you wonder why we’re not a P6 basketball program.
Your naïveté is embarrassing to think you went to Richmond.
Please clarify, what’re you talking about?

My first thought is, do we continue the buyout discussion in the “Fire Mooney” thread that had been quiet for 2 1/2 weeks?

we are not a "P6 program" because of the things that us non kool-aid sippers complain about.

What a mess UR has weaved. Pages and pages about firing Mooney. In the end, he’s protected and going nowhere. The trio of Queally, Hardt, and Mooney are perpetuating underachievement. We don’t have “a” problem. We have “3” problems. That’s a lot to overcome.

I wouldn't say pages and pages of negative posts from about 5-10 always angry, complain about everything posters means UR is a mess. The message board? Absolutely, no question about it. The program? Nowhere close.

The metrics don’t support you. Facts matter. It’s all there in front of you for the taking. On the other hand, homers are going to dismiss facts and instead paint God blue sky even if it’s cloudy, and that is perfectly ok. It takes two sides for a discussion.

It seems like many have different expectations. My expectation is to be winning championships which hasn't happen in over 10 years. Haven't received any national attention until this past year. However, the hype and the rankings were all smoke and mirrors. We basically fell apart after three covid pauses. We are going to run with this excuse.

3 senior starters decide to come back. As of now, no one has transferred. Highly recruited promising young guys ready to step up this year. A very good recruiting class coming in. There are a lot of programs in a mess out there. We are clearly not one of them.
For those of us who attended UR and took a lot of math and stats, we are well aware of what is known as double digits. VT4700 - please comment on and using numerics the following: Mooney’s record vs VCU, the last time we won a conference championship, and the last time we played an NCAA tournament postseason game. The numbers tell a story that brings to light your concept of “mess”. That is unless you weight returning seniors and a good recruiting class heavier than long term performance. Numbers and history matter more than optimistic fluff. I am with you in that the returning seniors will lead us to an NCAA bid because it is long overdue.

It's not going to happen. With Mooney nothing is a guarantee. We always lose at the worst point. The most pivotal moments in games and during the season.

It’s true that a lot of programs are outwardly in a mess right now, but many of them will fix things just as quickly. For example, Virginia Tech two years ago. Mike Young was hired and pretty much everyone transferred out. It looked terrible. But he fixed things very quickly because he’s a good coach and recruiter, and they made the tournament this year.

I’m happy that the three guys we have coming back are coming back and that Burton isn’t leaving, but let’s not act like those facts alone are worth anything. If the choices were a) everyone comes back and we miss the NCAAs again or b) everyone leaves, we get a new coach and new players and make the NCAAs, I’m going with b every single time.

I agree with you. I meant to say "hopefully " we get to NCAA's. I was typing quickly on an Iphone, & that's what happens.

WHAT? We are a mess. Haven't danced in a decade. 16 seasons. Average record, 18.0 wins, 14.4 losses. $16 mil plus in payment. Entitled to your opinion, but facts matter.

I think it’s fair to say that everything is relative. Are we better off than a lot of programs out there? Sure. I’m not sure that’s saying much. There are 350+ programs and probably 150’of them are regularly a “mess”.

We are two years removed from back to back 20-loss seasons. Haven’t done anything noteworthy in a long time. Things look up but frankly, we say that almost every year, so why is this year going to be different. Hard to say.

A lot of what each of us sees as the state of the program depends on the time frame you look at.

Certainly we haven't had the kind of success since 2011 that any of us wants or expects. That's unquestionable.

But the current program is not a mess. We had a very successful season in 2019-20. This years roster was very strong though fell short. But we have a very solid lineup again for next year.

We can't change that we didn't do well enough from 2012-2019 but that's ancient history to me at this point. Whether we won or lost in those years means nothing when talking about the current state of the program.

The problem for a lot of us is that while our returning pieces look great (just as they did this year), we have a decade-long track record now of not getting the job done. For whatever reason. Bad luck, bad coaching, bad playing, mistakes at the worst times, a pandemic, fill in the blanks. Something always goes wrong. We always fail to do the one thing that is (for better or worse) the defining factor of a program.

Could all of that change this year? Of course. But you see why expecting it to be likely or even thinking it might be likely involves a significant leap of faith at this point, given some of the key things that have been unchanged this past decade.

We have 7 seniors next year. We probably win 20 games be on the ncaa bubble. Play VCU in the A-10 tournament. End the season with losing to VCU. I highly doubt we get an at-large bid. Really doubt we beat anyone in the non-conference play. Having another bad loss or two could ruin the whole season.

if we play with the speed and defensive effort of the NIT games, I like our chances. foolish to come back for an extra year if you aren't ready to run through walls.

Were they not ready to run through walls the first 5 years? Why would it be any different this time? That’s why I won’t believe anything with this team until I see it. Hope I’m wrong.

the 19-20 team didn't win every game or anything, but that was a very good team and a very good season.

This is the most likely scenario, however we can hope for some luck for once.

I hope John Finestein, Eamonn Brennan, Dana O'Neill, Andy Katz, Jeff Goodman and whoever else proclaimed Mooney a savior of a Final Four sleeper in the summer follow up with similarly in-depth pieces about all his failures this year.

Still waiting on these follow up articles to come out. Or maybe a Grant Golden tweet spiking the ball at the 20 yard line will be first idk.

Promisings? The most over used description of the Mooney Spiders. Used but never achieved. You Mooney apologist must be compensated in some manner nobody, I mean nobody, can look at the last ten years and not see million dollar mediocrity. Promises never met. I feel for the players

This guy is obviously associated with the program, if not on the staff.
