Listened to Mcleroy this afternoon and finally had a talking point interesting enough to listen to. Curious to see what Spidernations thoughts on a permanent move to spring would be? Take spring sport logistics out of the equation and assume it could be feasible with all the spring sports. Do you like it? Hate it? Discuss

It would be something interesting to consider. I think I would be for it because I hate baseball. I think I would be for it if we can still have a money game or two in the fall and do similar to what tennis does where they have a fall and spring season that counts toward the entire record.

Slim pickings in the afternoon after 950 axed Brosephs and Burton.
I miss Hardly Working. Will always remember growing up listening to it with my dad every afternoon when he picked me up from school/football practice. Continued listening to it after I got my license and started driving at 16 and even would tune in while off at college just about every day and have a couple beers while listening to it. I took it pretty hard when they got rid of the show.

I enjoyed Burton growing up but his act wore on me as time went by especially with his VCU gushing. That being said light years ahead of Mcleroy. He’ll be fine though with his position at VCU, I really liked Wallace and Brosephs and hope they return to the station at some point when this all ends.

I really didn’t think Burton was that much of a vcu homer, no worse than anyone else locally. vcu actually wins so you have to expect the local media to be all over them. They are the hometown team and what people in the area want to hear about. Have to give the people what they want. I agree with you too about Wallace and Burton, really hope they bring both of those guys back as well. If wallace comes back I hope they get rid of Bob Black, he is horrible on the morning show.

A permanent move to spring? Terrible idea. This year? Sure, go for it.

I haven't answered the poll but I'm leaning towards the 5th option.

That being said if it meant more national exposure for the school and the players I would be all for it. Of course if we start winning rather than shooting ourselves in the foot, that would just take care of itself.

I've subscribed to the Czabecast for a while, and even his afternoon show (the DC one). I'm was so annoyed that 910 dumped his show for Wes. (Though that show no longer exists). I don't know how Czaban does it - he now has a morning show in Milwaukee, the afternoon show in DC, and a daily podcast.

I only listen to the local guys if they have a guest relevant to the Spiders.

Czabe is on 950 now in the afternoon again
WHHHHHHAT?
I like listening to the podcast version of his show, even if it is delayed by an hour - they cut out the commercials and I'm seldom in my car at that time.

But, thank you! I didn't think he was carried on any ESPN stations.

Not sure why we would move football to the Spring. It is perfectly suited for Fall weather and is almost a rite of passage in the Fall.

Now, this year, whenever the hell the have to play football, just play it. Please.

Let's have a Hardy Ball league in the Fall! See how many remember this at UR.

loved Hardy ball Carolina. One of the best things to come out of UR. & I’d say one of the two best unknown or non mainstream sports. The other being paddle/platform tennis.

Ok so roughly 1/2 of the Spidernation focus group would support a move to the spring, while 1/4 don't want it and another 1/4 think I'm a rambling alcoholic which is also probably a no. Anyways Im curious of the reasoning. Here are some potential pros and cons.

Pros:
Opportunity to get on cable TV more which could lead to more revenue
Allows you to follow FBS football more closely and attend games
A strong spring football league that is sustainable
Spring tailgaiting
Something else to watch besides baseball
Eight legger kiss of death thinking its a bad idea, which almost means it would be a wild success
Could bring more attention to FCS players

Cons
No fall football saturday
Absolutely screws over athletic communications offices
Too many spring sports
Its not in regular football season timeslot, so no one may know about it
Probably would end big money pay out football games, putting financial strains on departments
Could screw up the draft process
Spring season means draft eligible players may opt for grad transfer and play in the fall

The State resources and budgets of New Hampshire,Maine,New York(Albany,StonyBrook),Rhode Island,Delaware,Virginia,Maryland(Towson)
are forecasted to undergo some severe belt tightening given the pandemic. Most state budgets have been brutalized.
The private schools of UR,Elon,Nova will continue to have belt tightening as well.
It will be far less expensive for them NOT to have competitive football played this Spring(especially with no Money games).

If JMU,Elon,Nova are successful in playing this Fall(with Money games) the issue of competitive CAA Spring football becomes a moot issue.

Football Oversight Committee To Recommend Eight-Game Spring Football Schedule To D-I Council

https://kslsports.com/441232/footba...game-spring-football-schedule-to-d-i-council/

salient points:

~8 game schedule that ends April 17,2021

~FCS championship between April 18, 2021-May 15, 2021, with a reduced field of 16 teams (instead of 24) that includes ten(10) automatic berths and six(6) at-large berths.

~15 practices in 29 days

~implication is that practice would begin January 15

~implication is that Game 1 would start Feb 15

~ implication is that Game 8 would end April 17

CAA Mulling League Title Game For Spring

written by JMU guy, of course. Not so sure Russ is so keen on this concept or even any form of elongated competitive Spring football. He sees Fall 2021 as the important timeframe

Spring FCS Playoff Format Approved

CAA Football's spring format includes six leagues games for JMU, W&M, UR

“Conference competition is expected to begin on March 6 and conclude on April 17, with each team having a bye week during the seven-week stretch.
The 12-team league will be split into north and south divisions, and games will pair division members. James Madison, William & Mary and Richmond belong to CAA Football.

The team with the best CAA record will capture the conference’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. If two or more teams have identical league records, a tie-breaking system will determine the automatic qualifier.

Schools can schedule “nonconference” games against other league members, with those games not counting in the standings. NCAA guidelines allow teams to start games as early as January 23.”

Looking forward to the very traditional "Home CAA football game / Final 4 Viewing Party" double in early April.

add an ACC LAX game.

CAA 6-game conference schedule:

*North/South divisions: games against 5 divisional opponents count in standings; 1 opponent in home-and-home series)
*Up to 2 non-conference games (can be cross-division)
*No title game (top team record-wise or on tiebreaker receives playoff AQ)

Did they announce the divisions? Scheduling will be interesting for those wishing to try to make the tournament.

I’ll take a stab:

North

Maine
New Hampshire
Albany
Stony
URI
Nova

South

UR
WM
Elon
UD
Towson
JMU

The CAA will play a six-game conference schedule with the option for schools to add up to two non-conference games. Conference play begins March 6 and ends April 17. Each team receives a bye during the seven-week timeframe. Based on NCAA guidelines, teams are allowed to begin non-conference competition as early as Jan. 23.

The conference will use a North/South divisional format, with all six league games coming against teams within the division. Institutions are allowed to schedule non-conference games against other conference members, but those games would not count towards the conference standings and the outcome would not be used in the tiebreaking procedures.

Latitude used for N/S demarcation. Not only should the Spring 2021 scheduling be developed but also Fall 2021, contemporaneously.

Towson opts out of CAA spring-semester football

With COVID-19 cases near the summer record highs and as we now segway into winter it seems far less probable that UR has competitive Spring football.UR will have its hands full in mid January when both students and teachers return from Winter break after having left the UR bubble for 2 months(11/21-1/19).Concern over a competitive Spring football season will be extremely low on the Administration’s priority list especially without a vaccine. It doesn’t appear that Russ is really ‘on board’ with this experiment since he thinks it will hinder success in Fall 2021.

I predict Towson U folds under UMD and cuts football before they play another game.

Mo,gotta agree.State of MD in rough shape Financially.Tax burdens are enormous.Dont miss real estate property taxes in Bethesda.

Re Towson U,30% of the students live in college-owned, operated or affiliated housing and 70% of students live off campus. It’s basically a commuter school.

Tough to run a program with that demographic..

Perhaps the fact that it's a commuter school helps them because its easier to pivot to virtual learning and not as dependent on housing fees too. I guess we'll see.

That said, having a schoolwide annual budget of close to $600M and an endowment of less than $100M is a recipe for disaster.

I feel quite confident that the CAA, as it is currently comprised, will not be in tact when it's actually time to start playing football again. Given the budget noise coming out of Williamsburg, i would be less than stunned to see a move where UR and WM and Nova went to the Patriot as football-only members. JMU has their own budget problems but they're also saber-rattling about how the rest of the CAA let them down by cancelling the season. Might they finally hitch their wagon to an ODU or Marshall?

Rhody is another one in the same position as Towson.

Delaware is well-resourced but also dealing with major budget problems. They need to find $11M in cuts from a $45M athletics budget. Cutting all staff wages by 7% found them $1M. Where does the other $10M come from?

A really interesting 12-24 months is ahead.

The state budget has no affect on Towson’s football program, any more than it does on Maryland football.

you don’t even know how your state operates.Go to state house for a few days and learn.
arent you a resident?

“Towson University has incurred an estimated $40 million in losses for FY20, and we anticipate continued financial impacts from COVID-19 through FY21. While we do not yet know the full scope of the impact, we expect the state of Maryland to make substantial adjustments to state agency budgets to offset increased costs and reduced tax revenue to date and in the months to come.”
