Charleston game

I’ve always wondered if Mooney’s “I forgot to play him” is coach speak so the kid doesn’t think he’s in the dog house/unwanted or if he actually forgets to play people.

Agree with your first part. I think it is definitely coach speak. You don't forget to play someone, and if somehow you did, assistants would remind you and ask if you wanted to get a guy in there. Like with Sal last year, Mooney is not going to come out and say he isn't ready. You have to build kids up, not down. I said before the year started, I thought there would be some games Wojcik plays very little. It depends on match ups and how the game is going.

Think the mentioning of not playing someone is to build the player's confidence. Other than that it is a rather awkward/odd comment.

He's definitely not "accidentally forgetting" to put player into the game after five years of saying that. He's not an idiot. If he wanted to play those guys, they would play.

As a former high school basketball coach, it happens more than you may think. I was guilty of not playing some players because of being in the moment, then when the game was over I realized that I meant to put players in that really deserved some rhythm.

or he may just tell the kid in the locker room, you need to get better -- some kids respond well to being challenged

But it's not happening five years in a row to a high-level college coach making $1M+ a year to coach basketball.... Or if it is, there are some major issues there.

I have no problem with Woj not playing in the second half. He needs to start producing if he wants to play even limited minutes on this team. I take it as a message from CM to Woj. Not a bad thing in my opinion. I don’t put much into the forgetting to play a guy narrative we hear from CM.

Woj had about 3 minutes of PT, during that time he touched the ball no more than a handful of times and had two very pretty passes for assists. I don't think he passed up any shots....admittedly, he does need to start hitting more of the shots he takes. Not suggesting he should be starting this year, but he certainly isn't a liability. He may get beat off the dribble on D at times, but if you watch him closely, he is pretty crafty on D, creating turnovers/steals and is a decent rebounder. Think he has some toughness, just hope he has the mental toughness to manage the decrease in playing time and be an asset to the team when opportunity presents.

Of course he's not a liability but presently Woj (9th man) is not needed. His situation will not change next season unless an injury. Like I stated already, Wok is #1 on my transfer list if he wants to see the court. A defensive minded recruit/transfer big would be a win-win.

It's a good thing that it is only on your list

Woj. The fact of the matter is that their are just better options with Woj than this point. If your a bench guy, when you come in the game, you have to make plays. Woj isn't making them. Meanwhile, Goose is making plays all over the court and that really is who is he fighting for minutes with. And while things can change, Goose right now has delivered a TKO of Woj on their battle for minutes.

Mooney's mentions of Woj needing to get more minutes in the postgame is the kiss of death for him. Whenever, he says that, assuredly whomever he says it about is in fact not getting more minutes. Woj will see his minutes go up when he starts making plays out on the court, if he doesn't, I expect him to continue to get less than 5 minutes.

What I liked best about our Charlestown game is that our best player, Gilly, had an off night and despite that we still beat a pretty good team handily. Other guys stepped up, notably Francis, Grant, and Goose.

The depth we have is such a luxury, when you have 5 guys who can carry you on any given night, it really innoculates you when one or two of your better players have off nights. And when you are able to properly rest those 5 guys, so when they do get minutes, they can give you their best minutes, chances are even better that they are going to perform.

not surprisingly, I will disagree with you. I am believe in Woj. I am definitely NOT saying he should be playing ahead of the Goose, but we are going to need him before the season is over.

Outside of the STF PA game, when he did what I thought he would do--hit a couple of 3s, 1-2 from line, he has struggled since then. Mostly because he is making the wrong play---ie leave his man open outside of 3, pass up a 3 to take a 2, etc. etc.

Saturday he made 2 really good plays-that turned into 5 first half points for us (reverse handoff to Blake on the break for 3 and a back door cut to Grant for a lay-up). When he came out, he got the "CM handshake". Its just a start, but I'm rooting for him. He suddenly didn't forget how to shot, and maybe those 2 plays will start something for him.

The light bulb went off in Goose's head a few games ago, I'm rooting for it to come back on for Woj.

I don't think we disagree.

Look, if Woj, can come in and give us good high quality minutes, that would just make us a better team. He did make a couple good plays when he was in there, but when the guy you are most competing for minutes for is draining threes, throwing down alley-oop dunks and making some highlight reel blocks, your reverse handoff is gonna get overlooked.

And when the other two players who play your position are Francis and Gilly, your opportunity to get meaningful minutes are going to be tough.

Woj is not playing horribly but the 3 guys ahead of him are just playing at a really higher level now. You are right, we will need him this season and hopefully he will be ready.

Agree that the depth has been a nice improvement this year. Unfortunately, the past 5 or 6 years a dumb message board jockey like myself has easily been able to point out significant issues on the roster that came to fruition every time.
I am sure it is a huge adjustment for Woj, playing starter minutes to spot minutes. That is a tough transition. If Francis, or forbid Gilly twists an ankle or gets the flu and miss a couple games, he will really need to be ready. Gus seems to really be stepping it up, but Woj will be needed. We need to keep it up on the recruiting trail, no time for let up. Get that transfer big man, and let's get to work on 2021 class. I am starting to come around on sman's proclamations about this team's depth, glad to acknowledge.

Gilly still had a good amount of assists and steals and fact that he was targeted and did not have many opportunities for open shots, but he still created points through his assists and steals. We seem to do well when at least 4 players are in double figures and a couple more are 5-9 points. Against the top teams I think we will need 4-5 in double figures. This team will have many different heroes before the season is out.

Also Sherod was I believe 1-6 on threes and Gus picked a good game to add some threes. Yet Sherod and Gus
contributed 19 points from the SF position.

My guess is we pretty much always do well if we have 4 players scoring in double figures.
