Burton going through draft process again, no decision on returning to UR

For all the talk of NIL, we still have CM. So at the end of the day, does NIL make much of difference with Mooney at the helm? After 18 years and all the $ invested in the program, I doubt we see much improvement throwing $ directly to players with our constant.

As a measure, my understanding is UVA paid between 10K and 100K in NIL to players last year. Hard for us, or any non P6 school, to match near that.

As a school we aren't even willing to fully fund allowable scholarships in most sports. Don't see groundswell alumni support to spew money for a NIL program when there is scant evidence we, as a school, are serious about athletics.

Wonder why there wasn’t really any public announcement other than JOC’s vague article about expectations. Last year he did an Instagram post and UR even did a press release.

This is of course just the early entrants, not counting the guys who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and who are automatically draft eligible.

Last year, there were 283 early entrants, but 136 of them pulled out before the deadlines.

Don’t know the accuracy of this but someone from VCU who is former media wrote “Holmes is projected a late 2nd round draft pick. Unless he makes a move after some workouts he will go back. A UD fan told me that Holmes has a $1 million NIL deal at Dayton.”

If true that is amazing…

Heard something very similar about Holmes as well.

Assuming this is true (and even if it's not 100% true, I'm sure there are many situations around the country similar to this), I wonder about the team chemistry/locker room dynamic effects the NIL deals may start having on some teams. I know stars have always received star treatment in some ways, but this is taking it to a new level. I could easily see some animosity developing when there's a million dollar player on a team, guys 8-13 are maybe just getting the $2k/$3k per month treatment, and the rest of the team is somewhere in between but nowhere near the $1 million.

I think as long as that Star player receiving the money is well liked in the locker room and works just like everyone else on the court - then I don't see an issue. But if you have a star player that is lazy and expects to be treated like the star player no matter what - then I think this is where the money issues from NIL can explode. And of course - winning. Gotta keep winning and playing well with these deals to feel good about them.

Best of luck to Burton! Out of the 15 years of watching Richmond hoops I'd say he is the most gifted player I've seen in a Spiders jersey. If he comes back, that would be cool. Not expecting it though.

What does this mean? Is this different than last year? Does this chnage probability of coming back to U of R?
Since the NBA Combine is (I believe) from May 15-21 this reduces the probability of Tyler returning to UR...today...

Actually, now that I look at it, I think I misinterpreted the unclear tweet. So far, Tyler has only been invited to the G League camp. A handful of guys from the camp will be invited to stay on for the combine, in addition to the guys invited straight to the combine.

This is exactly the same as last year. He went to the camp, but then did not earn a combine invite.

This is correct...but I think there is hope he returns 🫣

Guess that means he is gone - signing with an agent? Or is there still a way out to return?

Did he sign with an agent last year when he tested the waters? That might be a sign. If he didn't sign last year but is signing this year - might hint at he is gone, which I think most on here expect. Either that or goes elsewhere.

Right, he only got the G League camp invite. A few of those guys will still be invited to the combine based on their camp performance.

What a difference to our team it will make if Burton returns and DeMarr Langford transfers in. Shouldn't be too long know before we know, but right now it feels like bottom-feeder or top 4 in the A10 are both in play depending on their decisions.

why would we ever be considered top 4 in the A10. Tyler coming back would be enough to keep us out of the bottom 4 which he did just barely last season. I will give you that at least.
I think King, Langford, Burton, Bigelow, and Quinn are a vastly superior starting 5 to what we had last year. I think people are underestimating what Langford could bring to us.

Are you forgetting Fordham & Duquesne are Top 2 now? ;)

My point is Top 4 today will be very different than Top 4 August 1...

if King is as good as we all hope, if Burton comes back, and assuming natural progression from Burton, Bigelow and Quinn ... I really like that line-up.

even without Langford I think we're better than last year.

I just never would have thought on 5/10 we'd only have 9 guys locked up on our roster. I look around at other teams and see we're not alone, but this is crazy.

Seems guys are still trickling in these last few days. So we can hold out hope for a late addition.
Tomorrow (5/11) is actually the last day that players can enter the portal. I bet there will be some interesting last-minute additions, but starting on Friday the number of players in the portal will only begin to decrease.
