2025 FCS Recruiting: Top Incoming Freshman Quarterback Recruits
HERO Sports looks at some of the most coveted prospects who signed or committed to the FCS. Today, we take a look at the quarterbacks.herosports.com
I love the name Butter; he’s gotta be tough like a “ Boy named Sue”. LOLI assume that the most recent additions are walk-ons
- Warrick Butter Stephenson - 2/4/25 - RB/CB - Douglas Freeman HS, Richmond, VA - 5'7"/180
- Carson Derey - 2/4/26 - DE/TE - Patrick Henry HS, Roanoke, VA - 6'3"/235
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound tight end initially wanted to end up at UVa to follow in the footsteps of his father, Walt Derey, a Northside alumnus who played the same position alongside Ronde Barber, but throughout his recruitment and following a visit to Richmond, that changed.
The offer did eventually come, extended to Derey in late January. He announced his commitment to the University of Richmond on Tuesday.
“It’s a big deal. I’m really excited. It’s a big relief. I don’t have to worry about the uncertainty of where I’m going anymore, so it’s definitely a lot less stressful,” he said. “I liked all the other schools, but Richmond was my No. 1. I just thought it was a great fit for me, but it was a very long process.”
“I feel like, just watching their tight ends play and how they have it set up over there, I think I fit in with my style of play. With everything, I think it all just lines up,” Derey said. “I got invited on a visit to Richmond and I just instantly fell in love with the place, all the coaches. It’s a great place, it’s not as big of a school as most places. I think I fit in there, and it just checked all the boxes.”
