Gameday! Your (4) Richmond Spiders take on (1) St. Louis Billikens (37-14, 16-8 A10) at 11AM ET from Capital One Park in Tysons, VA. SLU are one of the three teams we did not play this season, and there's no sugar coating it, this will be one of the tougher teams we will face all season, Non-Conference included. Picked as the pre-season favorites to win the A10, the Billikens started the season 15-1, before dropping some NonCon games ahead of A10 play. They did lose three series (@SJU, @Fordham, @UMass), but three sweeps helped keep their conference record at a stellar 16-8 en route to the 1 seed.
Their pitching is top notch, and they lead the A10 in team ERA (3.59) in Conference play. They do allow some contact (.265 BAA, 5th A10) and do not strike batters out (158, 11th A10), but they keep the ball in the zone and have only issued 59 walks, good for first in the conference as well (the next best team is Dayton with 67). Their top starting pitcher this season has been Jackson Holmes. He pitched 65 pitches over 5 innings on Friday against UMass, so should be ready today. He has made 14 starts this season, and has a 9-2 record with a 4.52 ERA. He has been even better in Conference play, and is 3rd in the A10 in ERA (3.18). What makes SLU so tough is that they have a plethora of solid arms in their bullpen; I am counting five players with > 25 innings pitched, ERA < 4.00, and BAA < .280. Their most reliant of the bunch is Ethan Bell, who over 34.2 innings on the season has 6 saves, an ERA of 2.86, WHIP of 1.33, and 46 Ks.
Offensively, SLU is an interesting story. If you look at their season-long stats, they look like the pre-season favorite. However, in A10 games only, they rank 9th in AVG (.272), 10th in OBP (.360), 9th in SLG (.406), 6th in HR (21), and 5th in SB (40 in 49 attempts).
Patrick Clohisy is their hitter to watch, and is a very real candidate for A10 Player of the Year. He has a .399 AVG on the entire season (Top 20 nationally), 7 home runs, 44 RBIs, 50 Runs, and 24 Stolen Bases as well. He did not play in the last two games of the season against UMass, but do not see any news of injury. I think they were just being cautious with the top seed locked up? Another hitter to watch is Senior Tyler Fogarty, who is on an 8 game hitting streak. On the season, he is slashing .335/.414/.596, including 9 home runs, 48 RBIs, 48 Runs, and 15 stolen bases. He has been a four year starter for SLU, and is a career .306 hitter, and is one home run away from three straight seasons with double digit homers. A really impressive career.
My mind tells me this is going to be a low scoring affair, but who knows. This is definitely a team that can be beaten, anything can happen in 9 innings.
