2024 Baseball Season

I think if we take 2 from VCU next series - we end up tied with them. MIght be enough to get UR to 2nd seed and a good bye in first round, but depends on tiebreakers and what Dayton does.

In these tourney's - pitching is the premium. Got to win early and try to save some arms, then when you hit deeper into teams rotations, let your offense take over and slug out a win or two.

But I agree with the new coach - Aoki - has done a good job this year in first year. Will be interesting to see what he can attract in the portal and recruiting with a full year under his belt now.

I think Dayton and VCU have clinched based on the fact they can get no more than 10 losses. Our magic number is 2; hitting the 13 win mark should clinch an A10 conference tourney appearance. However, a seed as high as 2 is still in play, though Dayton does take on URI in the final A10 series.

As a reminder, only the 1 seed gets a "bye", and the highest seed amongst the Day 1 losers gets to skip an elimination bracket game. With our thin staff, the higher the seed the better.

Aaron Whitley has finally played in enough games to qualify for the A10 stat leaderboards. Here are his ranks:

.394 batting average - 2nd
.500 on-base percentage - 3rd
.685 slugging percentage - 3rd
1.185 OPS - 2nd

Counting stats aren't there since he's played about 15 fewer games than the average A10 regular, but 50 Hits, 10 doubles, 9 homers, and 15 steals in 34 games are really solid numbers. Should be in conention for an all-A10 spot.

Kyle Roche ranks 4th in the league with a 3.37 ERA, 2nd with a 1.19 WHIP, and 10th with 62 K's. He also leads all of D1 baseball with an absurd 0.24 BB/9 and a 31.00 K/BB ratio. He has a tough 3-7 W/L record, but that should be overlooked to get him an all conference nod as well.

Great years for both of them. I assume they will go portaling after the season ends, which sucks for us. Hope we can win the series against the lambs and maybe get over .500 by winning the A10.

From my casual observation seat, it appears we're about what we were the last couple years, except maybe the league is worse this year or we are somehow just playing a little better in A10 games than in OOC games. Seems like the tournament should be wide open, though.

Gameday! The Spiders (23-28, 12-9 Atlantic 10) finish their season with a home series against the VCU Rams (31-20, 13-7 A10). This season has certainly had its ups and downs, but the Spiders are one win away from clinching a spot in the A10 tournament. Every game matters, our seeding could be anywhere from 2 to 7.

Game Times
  • Thursday, 1PM: E-Rod (62.1 IP, 4.62 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, .262 BAA, 75:35 K:BB)
  • Friday, 1PM: Kyle Roche (74.2 IP, 3.37 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, .295 BAA, 62:2 K:BB)
  • Saturday, 1PM: TBD
The Rams are coming off a sweep at Fordham last weekend (they also did not have a mid-week game) and surrendered just 6 runs across the three games. Their pitching has been their team's real strength this year, and as a staff in conference games their ERA is 4.02, WHIP is 1.39, BAA is .253, and have only allowed 13 home runs. Their star pitcher is actually a Sophomore reliever Brian Curley. He leads their team in innings pitched out of the 'pen with 65, and on the season boasts a stellar 2.22 ERA, 5-0 record, 2 saves, .238 BAA and a 67:25 K:BB ratio. Last week at Fordham, he pitched 5 2-hit innings, along with 8 strikeouts, en route to a save. Their most impressive starter has been Christian Gordon, who leads the A10 in strikeouts in conference play (49), and is 8th in ERA (4.03). He has been a bit less sharp as of late, and has allowed at least 3 runs in his last three starts (@GMU, GW, @FORD).

On the offensive side, the Rams have Brandon Eike, who along with Curley seems to be a lock for First Team All-A10 (he got the honor in 2023). The Senior infielder has done nothing but hit since he transferred from UNC, and this season he is 6th in the A10 in AVG (.356), 4th in OPS (1.073), 1st in hits (73) and doubles (25), and 5th in RBIs (50). As a team, the Rams are middle of the road in most batting stats, and in conference play are slashing .274/.374/.383. I feel like in past years we have seen a lot of power from VCU that appears to be missing this year. They also do not run the bases (unlike a lot of our other A10 opponents), and in A10 play have stolen only 13 bags in 21 attempts, not a great success rate.

I'll say we take 1 of 3, and end up with the 4 or 5 seed depending on how the other matchups shake out. But prove me wrong Spiders!

E1: Whitley Single.
Bernstein Double.
Jaffe Walk.
Pacheco Single.
Arcamone Single.
Lass Fly Out (advances Pacheco).
Lorenzo 6-4-3 DP, after Topolski left the game after seemingly getting hit in the face with a pitch.
Spiders up 3-0.

VCU starter today is Jack Hoeymans, who, coming into this game, pitched in 40.1 innings (5 starts) and had an ERA of 4.69, WHIP of 1.73, and a BAA of .290. In his last two starts against GW and Fordham, he pitched 7 innings, allowed only 6 hits and 1 walk, along with 11 strikeouts and no runs. Nice to get some early runs, as they usually turn to Curley on Hoeymans' starts after ~3-4 innings.

Coach sent out this e-mail today:

Dear SpiderBallers,

I hope this note finds you well. We are nearing the end of the regular season with our last series this weekend, home against VCU. As far as I can tell, we are currently tied for fourth place. About ten teams are within two games of one another.

We control our own destiny to get to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, and I feel good about our chances. We are a very competitive team on the weekends, and I believe we have greatly improved throughout the season. The midweeks, unfortunately, are another story. Over the next year, we will be recruiting to have more pitching depth so that we can compete at the level we should be. Heading into the weekend series versus VCU, our overall record is 23-28 and 12-9 in the Atlantic 10. Come out to Pitt Field or tune in on ESPN+ to watch!

After having gone through most of my first Atlantic 10 season, I am convinced more than ever that we can build a program that is a perennial powerhouse. We must recruit the right kids, which we will, and we then need to develop them, which we will.

Another critical component why I believe so strongly that we can be an Atlantic 10 power is you. No successful program can be built without alignment from the President to the Athletics Director to the coaches, players, and alumni base. It is impossible to build a program that sustains excellence without top down alignment and we have it. The support our alumni group has shown since my arrival has been fantastic, and I am so thankful. On behalf of our entire program, THANK YOU!

We were able to raise $87,000 during the UR Giving Day and there have been many more substantial gifts throughout this past year. We will build a program that you can brag about and be proud of. I’m optimistic that we can make a great run for our final few games and into the Atlantic 10 tourney!

Thank you for the wonderful support.

Mik Aoki
Head Coach, Baseball

Lambs walked in two more runs, then a FC got another run in so we are up 6-1 going to the third.

Nice (and honest) email from Aoki there, Wood, thanks for sharing.

According to the broadcast, VCU's pitcher Curley is sitting 93-94mph and touching 95-96. Pretty impressive offensive performance.

I have received more information, etc., from Aoki in less than a year than I did from Woodson the entire team he was coach. I have donated to baseball for many years because I want to, not because I need to have my a** kissed, but it's nice that my (meager) donations are acknowledged!

8–4 in the 7th.

Bona beat Fordham today, so I believe that means if we win this game, we're in the tournament.

Spiders threatening to really open things up in the 7th...single/single/walk to load the bases with no outs, Lass sac fly to make it 9–4, then another walk to load them up again. VCU pitching change with O'Keefe coming up.

Edit: Spiders got one more thanks to an error, but then a pop-out and a fielder's choice ended it.

Ouch, disastrous start to the 8th. Topolski coming in.

Edit: 2-run shot and it's 10–9. Still nobody out.

Ughhhh...Hentschel comes in with one out and gets a strikeout, but then gives up a homer. Tie game.

Our pitching is just brutal. You cannot blow multiple big leads like that in a critical series like this against your rival at home. This game has the feeling that if we don't score here in the bottom of the eighth, they are going to score in the ninth.

Definitely safe at second. Overturn that and see if we can tack on a few more.

Edit: Bah....2-run lead will have to do for now!

Awesome W in dramatic fashion. Congrats to the guys and Coach Aoki for making the postseason. They've really surpassed expectations in conference play.

This team probably still doesn't have the pitching depth to make a run in the tournament, but crazier things have happened.

does Coach hit the portal, or go HS, or both?

Rhode Island just survived a big 9th-inning threat (bases loaded with no outs and gave up nothing) to take down Dayton, 8–6.

Things are awfully tight in the standings right now:

SLU 15–6
Dayton 13–8
VCU 13–8
Richmond 13–9
GW 12–9
St. Joe's 11–10
UMass 11–10

GW currently trailing St. Joe's 4–0 in the 5th.
URI and Dayton will be starting the second game of today's DH shortly.

Definitely both. You don't need a whole staff of competent guys, but even having 1 or 2 more guys you can rely on in key games would make a huge difference for us. Right now, we can only really rely on 6/7 - Roche, ERod, Reinke, Ymker, Hinchliffe, Hentschel, and (sometimes) Topolski. Everyone else has an ERA north of 9.

We have 13 seniors/graduate students plus there will be some transfer out, so the spots will be there.
