NCAA Coaching Carousel

Florida coeds better be on the lookout. Golden is bulletproof there now.
He definitely has a creepy vibe. It was originally reported that there were multiple women reporting him. If these were false, would think he would have come out with much stronger words in his defense - though I guess I can buy that lawyers were directing his comments. No idea what to believe. Could also see Florida paying victims to go away in this world of big dollar SEC - that wouldn't surprise me either.

Crazy these AI edited interviews on twitter, there is one with Golden basically saying what you wrote Wood. NSFW type of interview.

not sure I've ever seens that. works for Creighton, but I'd think Huss could just stay a head coach at High Point and still get the Creighton job when it's available.

Was never a fan of the coach in waiting scenario in the past. I think in this case sman you are saying you have not seen a guy leave a current HC job to take assistant as the HC in waiting.
But not being a fan of the HC in waiting, it seems like it has a good chance to work well at Creighton. Bringing in a coach already successful as HC in D1. Will have backing as former player, as well as proven commodity. And will have some continuity - though we know roster continuity is not very prevalent these days. SDSU seemed to do OK with coach in waiting Dutcher taking over. I thought that would back fire, and was completely wrong on that one. So starting to come around on the idea a little.

agreed. no idea what he was making at High Point but he signed an extension in March. if I'm Huss, I probably tell Creighton "thanks for the interest. I definitely want to be considered for the job when it becomes available. But I'll keep head coaching for now."

McDermott may feel like he'll retire in a year or 2 ... but in a year or 2 that might change.

Remember that guy who was named coach in waiting at Syracuse? He got tired of waiting and eventually became the head coach at Washington.

The tweet does say sources indicate it's expected in the next two years, but no firm timeline yet.

In this day of NIL and transfers, he may have known his HP roster was at risk and hence his WL record

For sure, although he actually had just signed 4 pretty good transfers himself. Wonder if they will now go back into the portal?

yeah, I assume High Point has an NIL advantage in their league. they should do better than most.

He is probably getting at least twice more at Creighton. Easy decision.

And Creighton has a very healthy NIL and collective support. They have money to spend and they can be a top team in the Big East year in and out and get an NCAA bid.

I do wonder how much Huss was making. Tubby was making a little over $1 million until his final year when he made $2.4 million. He obviously had the pedigree to command a high salary (giving your alma mater a break has its limits), but High Point was certainly willing to open the checkbook for him. Much like their president who makes $2m–$4m depending on the year.

A quote I once saw that's stuck with me is that it's a resort masquerading as an educational institution.

so now schools are being put down for having nice facilities and maintained grounds?
guess we're next.
The criticism I think is that they've focused on that perhaps to the detriment of the academic mission. They've been in a strong growth mode and accept ~80% of applicants. They also had some accreditation issues within the past few years.

But I have no first-hand experience and have never set foot on campus or have any recollection of speaking with anyone who's gone there. It's just the general impression I get from those here in NC who have some familiarity.

Well - if athletics is all about the money, how long until the education side of the University/College side of the equation jumps right in. They have been to an extent the last several years with inflated tuition and loans backed by the government - but why not make the college more resort style and charge resort prices. Turn it more into a 4 year vacation setting.

we visited. I think they're growing the best way possible. can't be easy to change perception.

per wikipedia, they were a 1450 student not highly regarded college in 2005. so how do you change that? they decided to grow fast, taking on a ton of debt. no idea why debt and low endowment is so important in school rankings but it is. and taking on the Field of Dreams "if you build it, they will come" motto, they built it really, really nice. now they're over 6,000 students. their academic reputation will take longer to change, but to attract good students they don't charge as high a tuition as most, and offer a lot of scholarships to better students (who wouldn't get academic money at higher reputation schools). smart, because any school is only as good as the students they attract.

I just don't see beautiful buildings and grounds as a negative, yet I have heard it called a country club like nice things is a bad thing. in comparsion, I'm amazed that some schools as far south as Virginia still don't have air conditioning in all their dorms or at least didn't a few years ago. by now, that's unacceptable to me for the price you pay.

It's very different. It has a resort feel too it, from having 3 5 star restaurants on campus, the academic buildings are over the top nice, like do they really teach in them nice.

It gave me cultish vibes, they market themselves as a "life skills" college but everything seems like an enormous sales job. Also, it is completely gated off from the community, they even have a trail running through the middle of campus that the community can use but they can't get on campus, nor can the students access the trail. We couldn't get out of there fast enough.

But they definitely have established themselves a nice little "niche", catering to rich people who want their sons/daughters to have a very exclusive college experience (at least amenity wise, not sure the academics match that).

agreed, the visit was very much a sales pitch! the President is a bit much. and the school is very much cut off from the town (so is UR, without the security gates). but in fairness, High Point the town is a hole. I think I'd want gates based on the location.

President gave me televangelist vibes. Yes, High Point is a dump, particularly the area surrounding it but it was the whole totality of the place that unsettled me. We looked at 6 schools and that was the only one where we were like "nope", not a chance, immediately.

Funny you say that. My brother-in-law recently visited with his kid and also said he got “cultish vibes” and didn’t feel comfortable there.
