Up until about 20 years ago this was a battle between the the premier Baptist university in Va and NC. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Neither UR or WFU are Baptist institutions.

I think we're more Wiccan than Baptist. Harry Potter is the deity that the kids worship these days. That's why our Quidditch team is so kick ass.

Georgetown is very excited about the new direction of its basketball program under coach Patrick Ewing, an NBA Hall of Famer, Dream Teamer and Hoya legend. They’re just not really interested in putting them on a huge stage just yet, apparently.

The Hoyas dropped out of the field of the PK80, the star-studded November tournament in honor of Nike founder Phil Knight’s 80th birthday, on Tuesday.

“The Georgetown’s men’s basketball program is in the midst of an exciting time of rebuilding,” athletic director Lee Reed said in a statement released by the school. “Georgetown has a prominent, seasoned head coach who has begun this process, which will continue to develop in the fall. After considerable consultation with ESPN, we have reached a mutual agreement that Georgetown will not participate in the PK80 Phil Knight Invitational this November.

“The University values its longstanding partnership with ESPN and looks forward to participating in future events. We appreciate the understanding of the fans and organizations associated with this event and wish success to all involved.”

That looks a lot like the Hoyas ducking a tough – probably historic – tournament. The question would be why? The most logical answer is they’d rather face a few opponents where winning seems more likely than squaring off against the likes of Michigan State, Oregon or North Carolina. If that’s the case, that’s a bad look for the Hoyas. Even more so that DePaul, which hasn’t had a winning season since 2007, slid into their place in the field. What the Blue Demons would look to understand more than Georgetown is that being part of this field – and being associated with the game’s most powerful programs and sports’ most influential apparel company – is more important than how you actually perform in it.

Ewing is tasked with rebuilding Georgetown into a national power. The Hoyas pulling out of the PK80 is just a reminder of how far they have to go to return to their glory days. Ceding their place among the game’s greats is bad move for Georgetown, even more so if it comes from a place of fear of their ability to compete.

When Georgetown fans yearned for a return of ‘Hoya Paranoia,’ this can’t be what they had in mind.

Man...apologies for not catching the 7/28 crap...was a long week.

Last post I saw was the ECR/WFU connection. Will leave up for now, but if we continue to use the thread to discuss the schedule, I'll clean some of it up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. vcu is without a doubt a top 10 national program. By far the best team in the state and they have a national brand like Kentucky or UNC. Y'all will probably win like 15 national titles in a row. Also the Siegel center is right up there with Allen field house as the toughest place to play. It's probably tougher than Allen with all that fake crowd noise.
LMAO

I'll continue to watch. Baptist or not.
I know how carried away you can get so I would admonish you that regardless of the circumstances, we maintain the Baptist tradition of no dancing in the aisles at the RC by either you or et uxor tua. Restraint remains a high priority.

i, careful lest you provide succor to FRS's other uxorious leanings.

adding Delaware game is worth a post?

It'll give our young guys some experience but killer to our RPI

Can you point out a single at-large team that did not play any cupkcakes last year? Or any year?

we worry way too much about possible RPI drags. it's an ACC game. I'll enjoy watching. let's just beat them. if we win enough, our bid will take care of itself.

Well, you do have to worry about losing these 200+ RPI games. You really only need 1 or 2 losses to that group to tank your at large chances.

RPI is becoming less critical as a yardstick, but it is being replaced by other similar metrics so it's not like losing to bad teams isn't going to be a continued factor in who makes the field.

That said, I'd rather play BC than Oral Roberts...

absolutely. and you never know. they went 2-17 in the ACC and had a not-that-awful 219 RPI (considering). 2 more measly wins gets them to 4-15 like NC St ... who finished with a 141 RPI. that high ACC SOS helps.

"Hey, we get to play an ACC school (but it's BC)" is kinda like saying "Hey, I am dating an 11-time Emmy Award-winner (but it's Roseanne Barr)."

The first thing that would help would be for BC not to lose to Hartford & Nicholls St. Second would be winning 2 away ACC games.

I'm not arguing that it's not the worst of the ACC games. it is. but I don't hate it as much as some here do.

The thing with BC is that even though they've been bad for however many years, they have a higher ceiling. They are 2-3 more good wins in the ACC of skyrocketing their RPI up. A team like oral roberts really has no ceiling given their schedule and losing to them will always be far worse. BC is a good game because we can get lucky with them over performing in the best conference, and it can make a win against them look a lot better

The way the RPI works it doesn't matter who your wins are against. If they had won against Nicholls St. (253), Hartford (327) and Fairfield (180) in the OOC last year they would have had the same RPI as if they beat UNC (5), UVA (18) and Louisville (7). We just need them to not lose to those 200+ and 300+ teams in the OOC, the SOS boost from playing in the ACC should keep their RPI top 200 if they can beat the cupcakes.

So a team can have the same RPI beating teams 180+ as they would beating top 20 teams? Isn't RPI both wins/losses and SOS? Having a strong SOS in ACC - even if BC lost all its games - would be sufficient for a top 150 RPI as long as they don't lose to really bad teams?
