2016 Recruiting Thread

Love the name. I'm envisioning something where the PA system says "Take 1" with the Directors Cut board "cut" on his first free throw and "Take 2" on the second.

Technically, we are not out, but we certainly aren't in Clevon's top 10. He just picked up an offer from TX, so up against P5 level competition. Seems unlikely but you never know.

2016 SF Zach Hollywood (IL) picking up strong interest from Richmond.

about Hollywood:
Chicago Summer Jam
July 12, 2014
Player evals.
Zach Hollywood, 6'8 SF, 2016, Bradley HS- Meanstreets 16U
Zach played well vs Howard Pulley. The 6'8 forward has a smooth touch out to 3 point range. He keeps getting taller and taller every time I see him. A hidden gem playing in Bradley, but after this summer I think the secrete will be out. Very long, with a good, sneaky first step. At this point we see Zach at a solid mid-major. Schools should take notice quick!

05 April 2015
Zach Hollywood PF Example Sports 17U Was terrific in a match-up against 17U Fundamental U and put his full offensive arsenal on full display scoring with a wide array of post moves, as well as sliding out and banging shots from behind the three-point arc. Hollywood appears ready to have a big spring and summer.

Aug 21
Example Sports 2016 6'9 F Zach Hollywood will take Official visit to James Madison University Sept 5.
Here is a story about Mr. Hollywood. Sounds like he has the right stuff to be a great Spider.

our new strategy seems to be recruiting kids that were injured in their junior year.

Appears we have given Kirby a scholie for this year, which I guess completes our class. I would assume it's a one-year deal, but who knows?

Nice to see Kirby get a scholarship, if only for a year - which I have no idea if this is the case. These guys put in a ton of time. Obviously they receive some fringe benefits, but still it is a huge time and effort commitment in my opinion. From the videos of practices and workouts, etc, Kirby seems like a high energy/enthusiasm type of guy and I am glad to have him in the program. Congrats to Joe.

Nice. I just hope we're still filling two more spots in Sherod/Buckingham class.

I think this means that there is now one remaining schollie to be given this year.

Giving Kirby a scholarship this year means we have all 13 scholarships filled for the 2015-2016 basketball season. If we don't give him a scholarship next year there will be two spots still open for the 2016-2017 season (where we already have Sherod and Buckingham). If Kirby keeps the scholarship next year then we will only have room to bring in one more recruit alongside Sherod and Buckingham.

we had 12 on scholarship for this year. Kirby gets us to 13. no problem. nice to do since it wasn't used.
we lose TA, Deion and Trey next year. we were filling 4 spots (those 3 qand the open one) in the fall of 2016 with Sherod, Buckingham and 2 bigs. if Kirby is a one year deal, nothing changed. if it's permanent then we only have one spot left now for a big.
I hope that's not the case as we'll be in bad shape in the frontcourt next year.

yeah, what he said.

Well put, fan2011!

jumping back to the 2018 brother of 2016 Grant Golden ...

uniquehoopsUH Machine - #kop kid @brycegolden22 is completely unstoppable. He's going to have a great sophomore high school season. The best part about Bryce is he's still raw in certain areas. We will continue to develop his patience, ball handling, and footwork. He's a step ahead of the game already because he dunks everything, and I mean everything. He's also real aggressive, loves to be touched. Another HM kid with Division 1 offers that's constantly in the gym working to get better.

6'7" 2016 Grant Williams (Providence Day) has set visits Yale - Sept 4 Tennessee - Sept 12 Boston College - TBD

I believe we gave a schollie to Hovde for 1 year under similar circumstances back in the early years of CM's tenure. I'm fine that since we have the open ship this year that we give it to Kirby for 1 year versus just wasting it.

However, long term, Kirby came as a walk-on and think we need that scholarship for other players. Plus we really don't need any more scholarship guards on the team.

I'm surprised that we're not making the cutdown list for some of these bigs considering the signings we already have.

Ako Adams cut down and we are not included. Gotta think our interest cooled with our already committed guards.

I have heard that Golden will be here for his OV on 9/12 when both Buck and Sherrod are here for their own OV. Gotta think Grant is a top target at the moment.

Cooled isn't the word. I'm sure we liked him a ton, but once we landed choices 1A and 1B we were done at guard.
excellent news on the Golden visit.

OK, let's go ahead and get Golden and Thon Maker. Haven't heard from Tarrantula in a while, hope all is well with him. I'm thinking positive and just believing that he is meeting with Thon's mother for lunch and sharing his knowledge of a UR education ;)

I know we're hoping for another big, but I won't be sure we're not done until I hear we're still active with someone for 2016.

You are never "done" recruiting. First of all, we have an open slot. Secondly, the three recruits we have our just verbal commits at this point. Until they sign on the dotted line, that is not a done deal and even then it is not a done deal. Additionally, we had transfers out the past couple of years as well.

I highly doubt we have closed the book on 2016. We have this open slot, at the very least, I think we would trolling the open waters with that slot, seeing if we can get any big fish to nibble. I suspect we are doing more than that though.

yes, you're never done ... but we may be done. we don't know that we have an open slot. Kirby was granted a scholarship. I didn't see or hear anything that says it's strictly a one year deal. people here are assuming that. we're "done" for 2016 if that's not a one year thing.

Spiderman, If Grant Williams contacts our staff this morning and says: I want to be a Spider, what do you think happens? I agree, we could end up with just 3 in this class but if another good big man wants to commit I don't see us saying No.

I just haven't seen any updates of us mentioned with a 2016 target. I don't know CM's intent with Kirby. If his scholarship is just like everyone else's, then we're at 13 and done. If it's just give to him for this year because we have one open, then we're still in the market. We'll know if we see an update on a 2016 kid listing us.

Again, I highly doubt Kirby will be on scholarship next year. He is a walk-on and valuable to the team, and since we had an extra scholarship THIS YEAR we gave it to him. I doubt Mooney goes into next season with an extra scholarship again barring an unforeseen transfer situation like ANO. As for not hearing about us with any other 2016 recruits, there are still ~ 9-10 months left in the 2016 recruiting season. How many of our players in the past have we not even heard about until they commit? It is a fair number. Just because you don't hear about us actively recruiting 2016 players doesn't mean we are not actively recruiting.

true, and just because we haven't heard that Kirby will stay on scholarship doesn't mean he won't. until I head from someone that knows, I'm not sure.

+ 1 Fan2011. We are not giving a walk who couldn't get time but mop-up duty a 3 year scholarship. Mooney is smart enough to publicize his intent with that scholarship to allow him flexibility, but geez, we are playing big boy basketball where you have to maximize every scholarship offer.

This is a 1 year deal to say thank you to Kirby for working his butt off. We still have 11 open scholarship offers out on verbal commits and we are probably working on other guys outside that last as well.

The bottom line is that this is all speculation on our part. Unless we have the inside track by working in the basketball office, then we still don't know a thing.....Go Spiders!!!

It may be speculation, but I don't think Mooney is stupid enough to forgo a scholarship big man in favor of a walk-on guard who is behind Khwan, Shawndre', Josh, Jesse, Julius, De'Monte, and Nick on the guard depth chart next year. Even if we strike out with other bigs this year, we could probably still offer to someone like 6'6" Miles Thomas. Maybe Joe can get the scholarship back again his senior year.

I want another big as much as anyone. just saying we don't know. and we don't know that Kirby's behind Khwan, Shawndre', Josh, Jesse, Julius, De'Monte, and Nick on the guard depth chart next year either.

If Kirby is ahead of enough of those players to see meaningfull playing time, then we should have handed out scholarships to two big men and one guard this year. Using eight scholarships for two guards is crazy for teams that want to play in NCAA tournament, particularly when most of those guards are hovering withing a couple inches of 6 feet.
