2016 Recruiting Thread

SKJ is a pipe dream. I'd be thrilled with Nick

It seems Rutgers is sniffing around with him. Hopefully he recognizes that dumpster fire for what it is.

Mo, I believe that "Coach Tarrant Court" could become the new "Cameron". Now let's get in the Big East!

He will not be coming to play at UR under really any circumstances. We probably offered him 2 years ago before he blew up.

SKJ was ... 6/17/2014?... And not part of the 25 listed?

He has been offered scholarships by Kentucky, Kansas, UNC and a whole host of others. If you guys think we're involved, I really can't help you.

I was actually just pointing out if you look at verbal commits, he was offered by us over a year ago and it list no interest. If you look down our list of 25 offers on that site he isn't listed.

Let's focus here. Nick Sherod. De'Monte Buckingham. Nick. Ako. De'Monte, Nick.

And some bigs. Let's focus on these guys, not that we matter.

Man, I really like Nick's ability to shoot the ball, and at his size. He is listed at 6'3" - but on TV looks 6'5 or 6'6 - as I believe Moliva observed in person.

I feel just the opposite, 23. Seen Nick listed at 6'5" so I thought he could play the 3, but watching him I think he's 6'3" for sure. he's a 2, though a strong, tough 2. I like him, Buckingham and Ako, but no way we can take all 3 of them. 2 is the max as Buckingham or Ako could also backup at the point (but not NS).

no idea what we'd list him at. KoVien was listed at 6'7". we measured him at 6'5", and I think we measure in shoes. what the heck was he wearing to get listed at 6'7"?

I was under the impression that Sherod was 6'5 and a wing type player, but if he indeed a 2, I think we may be looking for just one of trio of Buckingham, Ako, and Sherod. We have 2 incoming freshman 2 guards currently with Jesse and Julius. How many 2 guard could we conceivably have on our roster? 3 would be my max, especially when you look at our need for big men in the next class. Unless Buckingham or Ako can play PG for us.

I have seen Sherod many times and he can play the 3. Lets dont get caught up too much in the inches thing. He is definitely not 6'5.

ok. A small 3, but the 2 and 3 are really similar to us anyway. both just wings defensively. he probably fits better at the 3 offensively as his handle is ok but not PG quality, which we usually like from our 2.

I thought Sherod could play as a big 2 or little 3 (at 6'3 5/8" ;)), while Adams could play 1 or 2. And that Buckingham only played the 2 but did it very well.

I believe Buckingham can play the 1 also. like Jesse, more a 2 than a 1 though.

It might seem silly but we are pretty much average for the A10 in terms of offers per open spots according to Verbal Commits.

Offers per open spot:
VCU: 12
URI: 10.3
Dayton: 10
Duquesne: 9.3
SJU: 9
La Salle: 7.3
Fordham: 7.0
Richmond: 6.3
UMass: 6
SLU: 5
GW: 4
GMU: 3.8
SBU: 3.7
Davidson: 3.5
Are we up to 9 with 27 for 3? With Chevez Goodwin?

We may need to open up the 2018 recruiting thread as well! Looks like on verbalcommits.com we have offered 2 PGs for that class--Rasir Bolton and Donovann Toatley. Around 6/11 for Toatley and around 6/7 for Bolton. Mooney loves the point guards!

Yes, apparently we lost our option to transfer candidate Jeremy Treaudo who went to...Dodge City Community College.

Yikes.

OK, so we landed two top targets in Buckingham and Sherod. Now we really need a couple of good big men. Who have we offered over 6'7"?

Saw we were in the mix (but no offer) for Michael Tertsea from John Carroll (Baltimore) 6'9" 225 originally from Nigeria. His best offer so far is from Dayton. Raw with a ton of upside.

There is a kid at Trinity that is supposed to be very good. 6'8" Freshman Zach Pfaffenberger. Class 2018

At the end of the day, I'm not sure how important recruiting the highest rated players is. The secret of UR's success, is recruiting grounded athletes, who value an education, and are dedicated to improving their game, year after year.

I think Buck and Sherod can attract some high profile guys. This class is the start of the change we want in our program, we can only go up from here.

Others seem to be taking notice of our week. Active discussion on Lambnation and The Sabre with some very positive comments about our program at the latter.

Did the former mention that Buckingham tried to walk on at RPI but Wade turned him down. That seemed to be the conclusion when I was there.

Mo, the comments on The Sabre were indeed very positive. I thought it was nice that they really respected Chris Mooney saying that he was a great coach who had done much with what he had. One even stated that he would have liked to have gotten our coach before they hired Coach Bennett.

My understanding was that Shaka had offered Buckingham, and when Wade was approached about the Shaka offer, WW was not interested in honoring the offer. I think at that point, between losing the current recruits, and all of the transfers, WW had to quickly stanch the bleeding and re-evaluate his options, and Buckingham was not part of the plan.

I think we are going to see WW work the lambs to a more power based team -- it'll be interesting to see what the fans think if he goes away from havoc

Many VCU fans think they will continue to recruit the 4* type players Shaka was pulling in at the end of his tenure. Having seen these '4*' guys play against us I was not particularly impressed, they had more success with 'worse' recruits in the past. Anyway, VCU seems to believe they are above the likes of Buckingham and Sherod. I have a hunch they will feel a little bit differently in a couple years.

The Lambnation crowd was generally upbeat about us getting Buckingham and Sherod. A lot of them were surprised that VCU had not even offered Sherod given his black and gold bloodlines.

While my last post was hyperbole about their spin on Buckingham. There has been a rumor for some time than another Sherod attending RPI is as likely as another McCurdy attending UR. For what it is worth...

As someone else has stated, we wish all the best for Buckingham and Sherod. You guys got two great players, and a lot of us were a little distraught that WW didn't pursue Buckingham. This will only help the rivalry, and I can't wait to see the games between UR and VCU these next four years.
