VCU's NEW COACH

Remember BYU suspended a player a few years ago for having consensus sex with his girlfriend. Religious schools have vastly different and more stringent student conduct standards than most schools.
Can we agree that we are both proud not to attend (or have attended) such an institution?

The Lambs have gone from 4 star recruits to suspended Oral Roberts transfers in a matter of weeks. Boy Blunder really has the wheels rolling.

WW has done a good job, given the situation he was handed. He has kept all the current players on the roster. The 1 recruit who we had a legitimate shot with when Shaka left (K Williams) is still in play. Scissum is a 3 star who will takeover the spot that was Jordan Murphys (2015 decommit) as they play the same position.

WW added a graduate transfer who averaged 14.5 points and 7 rebounds. That's proven production, better than an untested recruit. Smart in a transition year to get a good transfer at a position that were already recruiting hard for next season (CuJo and De'Monte Buckingham). This allows for the program to fill scholarships but not jeopardize the 2016 scholarships.

I don't know what you expected from a new coach, not like we hired Larry Brown. Getting nice gems and transfers during spring recruiting is crucial, and so far WW has done that. I'm sure you were talking trash about Shaka Smarts first recruits (Two stars Troy Daniels and Darius Theus) in 2009 when he was first hired. You were probably salivating at the thought of an Eric Maynor-less VCU. Let things play out before calling WW a "Boy Blunder". If it's one thing VCU has done right, was manage it's trajectory by hiring the right coaches and placing emphasis on Men's Basketball. I'd bet this will turn out to be a good hire much more so then I'd bet against it.

Interestingly Richmond is also listed with Cujo and Buckingham. Kenpom's recruiting forecast currently gives Richmond an 18% chance to land Buckingham and VCU only 4%. For Cujo he gives Richmond 14% to VCU's 1%. I have no idea how accurate these things are but it is interesting that Richmond seems to be way ahead of VCU in both cases.

Will Wade met with Buckingham on the 19th (He tweeted about talking to coach Wade). He retweeted a tweet that said Richmond visited him yesterday. Texas is also in the hunt (recently).

I honestly wouldn't give KenPoms recruiting rankings much thought (even if it said VCU 99%). He's good at statistical evaluations/predictions based on team performance during the season. His site has never been much of a recruiting page, nor does he have the recruiting contacts (HS/AAU coaches) that the recruiting "gurus" have. Safe to say both Richmond schools are in the hunt.

I'm baaaacckk. Just know that VCU isn't going anywhere. Two commits down, two to go, and at least one of them will be a true center, which is all we need. We'll be stacked, and Wade is most likely a better X's and O's coach than Shaka.

No one knows. If it was criminal, I assume it would've come out by now - hard to keep those things quiet for months.

Interesting you should say that...

I'm aware of one of your players that allegedly assulted a female 22 days ago. Was reported to VCU's PD and has been swept under the rug thus far. Girl got tired of the inaction, so pressed charges with RPD on Wednesday.

Notice I said "months". If that is indeed the case, then it will come forward. VCU PD very often doesn't sweep things under the rug (they're not exactly Liberty U. Or ODU police, they'd possibly lose their state certification if this is the truth). If this is true, RPD will investigate.

22 days ago, the team had several meetings since that was the day Shaka met with the Texas AD and left. Shaka has recruited upstanding citizen (mostly) unlike Grant (Maynor and Sanders weren't the greatest morally) - so this does surprise me if true.

I wonder how Doug Brooks likes this Billbury signing??? With all the highly ranked recruits waiting in the wings doesn't seem like a position of need, but maybe a show of non confidence in Brooks and Melvin? Sure seems like it to me.

Billbury states that he has taken full responsibility for what ever occurred, but then these are quotes from him:

"I'm just thankful I made it this far with nothing happening"

and

"I was coming out of the locker room dressed for practice, and it was just one of those things that happened," Billbury said. "It was a decision they had to make, given the circumstances."

Sounds like a trainwreck. Why bring him in when you have Brooks come on so strong at end of season, and Melvin Johnson at 2g?? Just stealing there minutes if he even can stay on the court.

I'm sure VCU fans are thrilled that Wade considers VCU and UTC to be on even ground from a recruiting standpoint, since his first signee is a guy he recruited at UTC.

Or maybe he was trying to get UTC up to VCU's level. Kid's a 3* and had Maryland, Alabama and other P5 schools looking at him.

If this girl does press charges, they will definitely need help rebounding. Catch my drift??? If they handle this like the incidents of Larry S. in city court, we will never hear a word.

There is a huge difference between having an offer from a big time BCS school and said school "looking at you". It's April and if a BCS school has not extended an offer, it probably means they looked at you and decided to keep on looking.

And sometimes those schools look but don't offer because the kid isn't interested. They usually make sure there's mutual interest before making an offer. Wade has shown since 2009 (when he joined Smart's staff) that he's an excellent recruiter, most of VCU's current players were recruited by Wade. He's had a good relationship with the kid for at least two years.

We should've taken the board update to do some purging around here.

a little unlikely that a recruit would have no interest in Maryland, Alabama, etc. when they're his "highest" interest.

Have you considered that Willie's recruiting success may have been a product of having Smart as his boss? Mmmmmmm.....

"Willie" was Smart's first hire for a reason, and there's no FF run without Wade and Rhoades.

Yes, VCU owns the court system - especially with our law school, where most of our graduates stay in the mid-Atlantic/Virginia. UR probably spins the legal system around here much better than VCU.

Why don't you inbox me who you think is this perp, and I'll ask my friends in here VCU PD if there's any truth to it. I served in Iraq with them, they'd let me know if anything was going on.

We know all about Sanders, BUT Maynor.......Do tell.

Maynor walks on water is what we have heard. Very interesting.

Maynor didn't do anything wrong legally. Let's just say there were pretty crazy parties, crazier than the usual. Happens at every school where there's sports though. My friend was a D1 athlete at UR, their stories are crazy too.

It is pretty convenient to say "a" VCU player committed assault, but that VCU PD is keeping it hidden. Now, posters on here saying it may get "swept under the rug" by the Richmond court system.

So if there's truth to it you can claim you knew beforehand. If nothing comes from it, you can say "they're lying, he really did something but they're keeping it a secret".

Pretty convenient.

Too funny. You are the genius coming on here disparaging Maynor. No doubt crazy stuff goes on at every college, and with D1 athletes. Your just the only one that comes on a rival message board and throws your greatest player ever under the bus. Well done. Go cry some more on the ram board.

I'm not throwing Maynor under the bus at all. Just saying he probably partied too much, to a point where Smart would step in.The dynamic of Smarts VCU teams are much different than Grants, when it comes to the personality of the recruits. There's a reason Sanders left a year early (his draft stock wouldn't have taken much of a hit if he stayed).

If you don't want me posting my opinions here, than maybe you shouldn't have several threads dedicated to VCU every week.

Not sure why you read them, got any other players little secrets you want to share??

I read them because I'm a fairly big fan of VCU (and MInnesota) basketball, as well as CBB in general. I like to see the viewpoints here, as well as see if I can learn something new (I didn't know you guys were recruiting Buckingham and CuJo until this thread - you're not listed on 1 of their recruiting pages).

I also subscribe to Lincoln's process of thought. He surrounded himself with a cabinet which would regularly disagree with him, causing him to re-approach his decisions and thinking. I find the VCU board to be too preachy to the choir. Here, you will view VCU with a less biased viewpoint (although some on here swing the pendulum way far in the other direction). It's not as if I insult Richmond constantly, I even congratulated you guys on winning both regular season matchups after the games. You seem a little frustrated with VCU fans and paint them with a broad brush after previous episodes.

I know several UR fans in person, and they never espouse the hatred that most have on here for VCU. There's no reason why we can't have a better rivalry - although still heated.

Good Stuff, now give me one more dirty little secret and we can call it a night. I will say even though I have mocked WWWWD on here, I did say we could be in for a tougher time if all that is espoused is true. But you have to give Shaka credit, he is one of the top coaches in the country - if Wade is at his level then VCU has found a magic formula. I do hope the allegation about the VCU player is not true, but if it is and the campus police have not acted - then that is a scandal in itself that needs to be brought to light.

I actually never heard about this. Could you guys tell me about it? Haha I'm sure it would never be discussed on RamNation.

I agree about the police, if they covered it up something must be done. If they willingly and knowingly swept this under the rug, they could lose their training academy accreditation and their international accreditation. Id be surprised if Chief Venuti (former RPD) would allow this to happen, but who knows. Right now this is all just online rumors.

Re: the allegations, I'm not going to mention any names, as that does no one any good. I gave you a specific date of the incident occurring and the alleged charges that were filed. I will follow up on this next week but don't anticipate learning anything new until the first week of May.

And Gopher, I've been around long enough - enough people know who I am - I don't post BS, even if it's about our rivals.

Everything I have read about Wade suggests he may be a "Billy Donovan" clone, in that he is young, energetic, a strong recruiter, and knows how to teach defense. To me, a lot will depend on how well the current players adapt to him, and give him their full support. If there is any kind of "mutiny" situation, of players leaving just because Shaka did, then there will be a rebuilding period. However, smart players on the current team will likely see that they are getting a strong coach, and one who knows their system well. I just saw in today's RTD that he has landed a couple of players who sound pretty good too, including one who played HS ball with Khuan Fore, our redshirting freshman point guard. This guy would likely have been a target for us, if the "academic profile" had been a good fit. I liked Shaka, and hope that his successor will keep the program strong. We need a few programs in the A-10 that can be competitive, and have a national profile, and it can only help our "strength of schedule." It would also be nice, of course, if we can take down a program like theirs 2-3 times per year. I wish coach Wade the best of luck, against everyone but UR.

have to chip in here and let ALL know that, i served in nam, the gulf war, iraq, afganistan, know many campus policemen at several universities and commuter schools and am friends with several division 1 student/athletes at numerous colleges. am kind of a well rounded, well informed type of guy.
