VCU's NEW COACH

they absolutely can put restrictions on them, 97. you signed a letter of intent at our school. not for our coach, for our school. we're at a big disadvantage if we let you go. we stopped recruiting for your spot. kids moved on. we do understand you want out because the coach is gone. we'll help you out. you just can't go where you're going to play against us twice per year for 4 years. kid agrees.

Sure, they "could" do that, but every other recruiter will be sure to mention it to every kid that school recruits in the future, too. "Hey, you know if you sign an LOI with that school and then their coach leaves, they'll restrict where you can go after you get a release."

In the long run, it's just not the best way to conduct business. Which means VCU probably will put restrictions on them.

You can release but exclude them attending certain schools or conferences

Thank you Rick
So, I guess if for some reason my son wanted to transfer to another D1 Lacrosse program later on, there shouldn't be any NCAA restrictions similar to the ramifications tied to the NLI,
right ??

Mario,

There might still be restrictions (such as if his coach denies his request to talk with other schools), but the NLI wouldn't be one of them.

Hi Rick: Can you clarify that a Release from an NLI with a NCAA school carries no restrictions on an athlete to immediately attend, receive an athletic grant-in-aid, and practice/play at a new school? Versus not receiving a Release, losing the appeal process and still deciding to attend a different school where he would have to sit out of competition (but still practice) for one academic year AND lose a full year of eligibility? Thanks, GH

Gene,

An athlete can be granted a complete release from the NLI, in which case they are free to choose another school, enroll, receive a scholarship, and participate (assuming they meet the academic eligibility requirements).

There is also a partial release which allows an athlete to contact other schools, but still imposes restrictions on them if they indeed choose to enroll somewhere else.

Rick

Restrictions on Release of LOI

Justin Tillman leaving RPI. It would appear that Boy Blunder brought his "chaos" with him. Katy bar the door if Terry Larrier leaves.

All I want for belated Easter is for Brooks or Lewis to leave too. Am i being greedy now?

their board seems to be saying he has asked for his release so that he can look at other options, but he is still considering vcu

Also my recollection is if you go to another A-10 school there is a 2 year sit out obligation -- so expect him in another league if he does tranasfer out

I'd bet a mortgage payment that none of these kids will be back at RPI. Near impossible to put that genie back in the bottle.

Agree Mo, Wade having to spend a lot of time there re-recruiting the team he already had. I expect Larrier to leave also.

Shaka was on such a pedestal that his leaving may be crumbling the reason many of the current team as well as the recruits wanted to attend and play basketball at RPI.

From what I hear, the Shaka statue and pedestal are melting pretty fast over at RPI.

Yeah was at the Tregedar Iron Works for a wedding reception on Saturday and the statues at nearby RPI were being forcibly ripped down and the denouncing of the former coach was in full swing. Hell hath no fury as a fan base being scorned............................

I bet there is a lot of hacking on Shaka down at RPI, but of course no fouls are being called.

So if all the recruits get out of their LOI and don't attend VCU and say they lose 2-3 current players because of transfers - does VCU turn sour on Shaka and say he left a "bare cupboard" for Wade to work with?

They have already turned sour, extremely sour in fact. I have never seen a group of people go from worshiping someone to vilifying them so quickly.

I'm sure at some point Willie Wade will apply a tourniquet to tide the uncontrolled blood loss that is occurring, until that time happens though, can't we just enjoy the carnage. This thing is taking on soap opera proportions and man I love some good drama.

I thought we hauled the Mooney statue out of Westhampton Lake after the RPI victory at Costco. :)

+1. I think it is up in Ulla's garage getting refurbished.

sorry to spoil all the fun but no one is leaving - one new recruit yesterday and another today.

ORU = Liberty. Their students have a dress code, are prohibited from drinking alcohol and having pre-marital sex.

I understand guys on here for bashing Briante, as he did something wrong, but you're judging Korey when you don't even know what he's done.

Pretty high horse of you, when one of your current players pled down from felony battery to a battery misdemeanor and 12 month probation. You've given Nelson-Ododa the benefit of the doubt when you knew exactly what he did in the first place, but keep thinking your players are morally superior in the world of college athletics.

I didn't realize Weber was only 10 steals away from breaking NCAA record. That's tough.

So, what did he do?

So, what did he do?

No one knows. If it was criminal, I assume it would've come out by now - hard to keep those things quiet for months. More than likely it was a violation of the institution's rules, or specific team rules (which obviously I'm not privy to). I'd guess drinking, "girls in the dorm" or something of that like - but repeatedly, or he'd been warned numerous times. I think ORU wouldn't benefit from airing the reason, nor would his new school. It'd be up to him to let whatever the cause was, slip. Liberty used to hold their student athletes to the same standards as their students, but they've loosened it to become competitive in their hopes of FBS. I have no idea how strict ORU is with their athletes.

Remember BYU suspended a player a few years ago for having consensus sex with his girlfriend. Religious schools have vastly different and more stringent student conduct standards than most schools.
