Tyler Burton - 2019 Richmond Commit

Whenever we have a special player like Tyler, I always worry that they get tired of mediocrity and move on...
I see good payers move to higher level programs all the time.
how many have left us for higher level programs?

This would all depend on what Burton sees as the future of UR and his best path to a professional career.
I am in the boat that Burton's last 2 years will likely be down years where we hover around .500. But with that being said - I also think those are years where Burton can be the best player on the team and put up good stats and numbers. If I were him - my concern would be that Burton is a wing player, so he needs some help from the guard position in order to set him up with good looks and get him the ball. Right now he has this with the current roster. But we have no idea what he will have the next 2 years.
Overall - I think his best move even with a .500 UR team would be the stay at UR, put up good numbers - try to make 1st team all A10 and see if you can get some NBA looks that way.
Moving up might help his NCAA chances, but not sure it will help his professional chances as much and I think at this point in his career - he has some NBA potential depending on his development the next 2 years.

We’ve had more players transfer to Louisville than tournament appearances since my freshman year. And next time when (if) we make the tournament we will have twice as many transfer to Louisville than tournament appearances lol

I guess you don’t believe in jinxing.

One would have to believe that keeping Burton is CM’s top priority. If he left, I think the forum would explode.

For his many faults, CM has not lost anyone exceptionally talented to transfer.

exactly. I expect to enjoy Burton for 4 years just like how we enjoyed Gilyard and Golden for 4 years.

there are a lot of kids who transfer every year. it certainly could happen here but we haven't lost any undergrad transfers looking to move up. our best players seem to love UR and their teammates and they choose to stay and play for Mooney.

Agree, transfer out has not been much of an issue last several years, though I know the Mooney lovers loved to kill ANO - and he didn't do much at Pitt - but I think could have been a huge help to us that year.

Lack of transfers in has been bigger problem. Mooney ever so slowly progressing in this area - next season would be the one to really step up the game and bring in two proven guys inside.

Burton has taken a very impressive step forward this year. He has a great chance to be an NBA player IMO, hopefully he has that gym rat in him to keep improving. Looks like he may based on his play this year. Shot becoming more consistent and playing with great confidence.

While it may be applause worthy to not lose players, I don’t know that it’s say a better attribute than having NCAA appearances. Sometimes if you place an excessive value on keeping players happy it may mean that you are not pushing them hard enough to help them reach their full potential. Or maybe you are recruiting players for loyalty over performance. I’m not saying that is the case here, but just offer a perspective that when your job is to make NCAAs, you need to do that.

Back on top - Burton has a very high ceiling. He’s not there yet so I hope we push him hard to make the same leap each year.
