Tyler’s magical game and moving forward

Tyler was great last year. he's an even better player now.
I don't think this team is as good as last, but I do think we'll be playing our best basketball at the right time. we'll see if it's enough.
Tyler was great last year. He was our leading scorer. BUT - everyone knows inside and out that Gilyard was the heart and soul of the team, and Golden had been here so long he was our leader as well. Then in the A10 tourney - Matt Grace shows up out of nowhere, so I think Burton was forgotten in a sense. And now - when the team is truly is HIS team, we don't have much support for him. He is putting up great numbers, A10 POY type numbers, but the wins are not adding up.

BUT - I do think if this team can gel by A10 tourney time and we go on another magical run, the Burton appreciation and legend will grow quickly.

Tyler's numbers in the A-10 tourney and against Iowa:

12 points/11 rebounds
14/8
16/8
16/12
16/11

He wasn't hitting his shots like he normally might, including going 4-15 from 3 those games, but what does he do about it? He gets to the foul line, and makes 34-39 there those 5 games. Grace was huge at the end of the Davidson game, but we wouldn't have had a chance without the back to back And 1s from Tyler in the final 90 seconds. He is a special player who gives us a chance to win every time he is out there, and is a big reason why I think we will have as good a chance as anyone in the A-10 tourney.

He was close to automatic in the tourney's last year at the FT line - thx for pulling the stats. I can tell he has been frustrated with slightly less FT profiency this year and I'm sure is working on getting back to the same level. Looking forward to his next show on Sat night.

Burton is awesome. The comparison to last year and not really applicable. Yeah, Gilly was the leader of that team, but he also had Grant and Tyler to make him great. Tyler is the only all A-10 caliber player on our roster, he has no wingman, not to even mention, 2 as they all had last year.

And yet, he is still piling up the numbers. He is the singular focus for other teams to stop right now and they aren't stopping him.

Its nothing against Burton, and any Spider fan knows he was our best player last year from a statistical standpoint. But the reality is - when you look back at season last year and the A10 tourney run - 2 things come to mind. Gilyard and Grace.

Grace with the big plays, and then Gilyard. Last 13 games of the year - Gilyard played 40 or 39 minutes in all of them. He had 32 vs. VCU in A10 tourney and then I think 24 in the A10 final and then 24 vs. Iowa.

Burton press conference today - interestingly, JOC asks him if he is considering returning to Richmond next year (he deflected). I thought that was already off the table? Also asked if he ever considered leaving for UR for another school and if he ever thinks about where he would be if he stayed in the NBA draft this summer.

I don't think it has to be a which guy carried us memory, at least for me it doesn't. I remember all the guys making plays. Nothing bigger than Tyler's 2 And 1s late against Davidson and Nate's 2 plays late against Iowa. Shoot, I still often think of how key Wilson's 3 was against Dayton.

What another great Tyler interview. He just gets it. Says all the right things. He is so awesome and really cool how he keeps in touch with Grant and Jacob. With his great talent, athletic ability, work ethic, team first attitude, desire to keep improving in all areas, and about 20 other positives he shows every game, I think I have to give him a serious serious look if I am an NBA team at this year's draft.

he's such a great interview they wouldn't let the intervew end!
never heard a player get peppered with so many questions in one sitting.

Let it be known: Out of all Preseason A-10 Team selections, Burton leads them all in terms of RPIM. He's well on track

For those of you on Instagram, Tyler posted a great video last night that my daughter forwarded to me. Worth taking a look - unclear what it means in his big picture. Don't think I can directly link here.

I would not be surprised if Tyler transfers for his last year. But you could make an argument either way. Overall - he had a disappointing year in terms of pro prospects. Shooting 29% from deep is not what the scouts wanted to see and it was evident that he sometimes gets out of control when putting the ball on the floor. Some of this I think is on Tyler, but some is the situation he was in where I think at times we relied on him too much - but honestly, I think we had to rely on.

So - he could stay at UR, be the top dog, and get all the minutes he wants. But defenses will focus on him again, and he will face much of the same difficulties he did this year. So unless he is super confident in his abilities to overcome those issues, minus Grace - who a few times during the year was able to shoulder the load offensively - he could be looking at another disappointing year OR he could be looking at POY type numbers.

OR - transfer out to a P6 program that has a good shot at the NCAA. Likely be 2nd or 3rd option on that team, but that might allow Burton to really shine at times in the open floor, drive and kicks, etc. Plus he does it on the bigger stage and if they make NCAA tourney and he has a good game or two, maybe scouts are impressed. Downside - he is 2nd or 3rd option and could be forgotten at times. Does he get the minutes, shots, opportunity to show scouts his worth on the bigger stage?

And of course - he could just leave, go into draft and hope he either really impresses in workouts and gets a 2nd round look or he takes G-League route.

I bet he takes the Transfer to P6 like Kentucky. I bet Iowa would love to have him too.

He’s been on scout’s radars for a few years, can’t imagine another year of college ball is going to make a difference in how they feel about him. The NBA likes young talent, another year in college isn’t going to make him more attractive to the NBA.

At this point - another year is not going to hurt him much nor help him much either. Unfortunately - he is 23 years old, which by NBA standards is OLD for a rookie. They much prefer their rookies now at 19-20, so they can get working on them in terms of NBA skills and body formation. But remember - you only make about 50K in the G-League, and I think Tyler could transfer to a P6 and get an NIL deal for more than that - so that is worth considering as well. I also think he is a guy who could start at 80-100K in most European leagues and with a good year or two over there - he could be looking at over 200-300K a year in just a year or two WITH a good starting season.

I have no idea what Tyler will do. He has given us everything a team could ask of him for four years now. He has options. NBA wise, I hope I am wrong, and I would love to see a team pick him in the draft, but I don't think he will get drafted, and if not, there is nothing wrong with doing what Jacob and Grant are doing right now. Maybe he feels at age 23 he is ready for the next level, even if it is G league right now.

Could he transfer? Of course. If so, I hope he puts a lot of thought into his decision and makes the best possible decision for him. The grass is not always greener, and he would not be the main guy if he moves up to a power school. A ton of teams would want a talented player like Tyler on their team, but you just never how the fit might be somewhere else. It's a risky move when you go from being the guy and playing close to 40 minutes to a brand new team at a higher level. Playing time could fluctuate.

Stay here another year? Absolutely. He likes the coach, and likes the team. If basketball is fun for him here, why not stay and be the guy again? I don't buy the talk that teams took things away from him so he should go play with more talent somewhere else. He averaged 36+ minutes, 19 points and 7+ rebounds a game for us. He averaged 14 shots a game, and had enough of a green light to take 188 3s, even at 29%. A lateral transfer does not make a lot of sense, and he won't find these numbers transferring up, so maybe staying here is the best option. And, if he has a much better year than this past season, and improves on a few things, even at age 24, he could have a better chance to get drafted than this year at age 23. Age is a factor with the NBA, and they do like drafting young guys, but there is not much difference in age 23 or 24.

After watching the G league a little due to @SFspidur posts, there is no doubt to me that playing college ball at a P6 with a NIL deal is much more fun and more lucrative for nearly all the players in that talent level. The likeliest spot to me would be Georgetown, but they aren’t likely to be NCAA bound. However, the Big East is a big step up in competition and I am sure Cooley will assemble a good team. Tyler would need to announce that he was in the portal by May 11th right?

Unfortunately doesn't appear to even be in top 100 NBA list presently. Looked back and seen so many very good college players not even sniffing a NBA roster. Surprised but happy seeing how well GG and Jacob are doing and expect Tyler would also do well.

Though if going to the Dance a priority staying here isn't the best option. Might not be since already experienced it and just loves Richmond/playing for Mooney. Looking at season didn't have as good of a season as we/he expected. He could do better just like team and other than a few A10 teams looks like a weak conference.

I mean look at Bonny guys who left. Wow what Holmes and Osunniyi did at Iowa St getting to Dance while playing plenty. TJ O is some coach who gets enough talent can be successful in Big12, Lofton played like he did at Bonny for FLA but no bid and dreadful last game in post season. Welch got to Dance at Bama but after I guess being injured beginning of season was riding the bench. And the other guy don't think he's on a NBA roster.

Tyler has tough decision with 3 options but like already stated at his advanced age one more college year probably help more than hurt if any chance for NBA. His value has dropped in NBA scout eyes so needs to be in the conversation again. And like reading above no guarantees making the Dance no matter where he goes.

So maybe come back being more the Man of the team helping him individually and if no Dance so be it. He has that experience already.

I would suggest motivating Tyler to stay a year by offering him the opportunity to get directly involved with our coaches to bring in the pieces needed to get back to the dance.
