Tyler’s magical game and moving forward

Tyler has always had NBA athleticism, but lots of players have that and will never play in the NBA. What he has added this year though is his shot making ability. The combo of his height, jumping ability and that sweet soft release and arc he has on his shot though, that is a true NBA quality.

I'm sure he will do pre-draft workouts after the season and if he gets feedback that he is gonna be a first rounder, than by all means, he has to take that opportunity. However, I think another year here would make him a sure fire first rounder particularly if he can improve on his defensive footspeed and ballhandling abilities. Those two areas are the areas that I see that may hold him back at the NBA level.

I don't see him transferring. He knows our system and is excelling in our system.

I agree with a lot you said here. I do differ on whether he would transfer or not. Any team in country would take him, and unless all the Duke players transfer here, we will be terrible. He would have two years under a good big man coach somewhere else, and go to the tournament twice.

Even more magical … wow … plan on seeing the next 2 wins against gmu in person and hope others come to the arena formerly known as the Patriot Center next Wednesday

Tyler’s dribbling and footwork is below average for the NBA. When trying to backdown
someone, he stumbles half the time and loses the ball. Honestly to me he does not look
like he is enjoying himself on the court.

maybe after Golden ripped him on the in game video? I didn't see that, I'm only going by what a number of folks on here described as weird and a little disconcerting. To me it sounded like typical fun ribbing you would expect from a teammate, or maybe an inside joke, but I don't have any context admittedly.

he still needs work, but he's got the tools.

Unfortunately is below average for a college player. He has great attributes and a wealth of talent but these two issues are holding him back.

I like Tyler alot (haven't said anything about Grant in a while to my recollection) but nothing about him says NBA to me. As a two guard he's too slow and doesn't shoot well enough and can't handle the ball. As a three he's slightly undersized, can't create his own shot, and simply can't play D worth a lick.
This is mooney overselling... And the NBA scouts aren't going to sell Tyler to their respective teams. And he sits on the bench of lots of P6 teams if he decides to transfer so I don't see that happening. And God is he going to be the focus of defensive attention next year since we'll have very little else. He already can't get his shot off when closely guarded

If he does return I could see us force feeding him to the point that he gets his ~20 a game no matter how many shots it takes.

Still, he struggled against top end defenses this season so you’d hate to see what they could do to him without having to worry about Grant, Gilly, and whoever else moves on next season.

Interesting take from a mock draft site listing 75 total players and with 4 potential NBA players from the A10. Appears presently Hall rated the highest after looking at more than a few sites. Probably for his ballhndling prowess at his size. At those sites when mentioned Burton slightly ahead of Lee. Maybe missed it but haven't seen Oduro's name mentioned anywhere.

AREAS TO IMPROVE | CONCERNS

  • Doesn’t have great vertical pop around rim finishing drive - I hope Tyler reads this and it pisses him off. He tried to dunk on that Dayton guy and got fouled. If he can get one of those poster dunks on a guys head itll really give him confidence around the rim going forward. Huge mental thing.

I wish he kept it in two hands there, where he can get fouled and still finish. but good aggressive play. he's definitely got vertical pop.

I think by "pop" they mean a player who doesn't have to gather himself (which Tyler does do very well) but someone with a "quick" jump. He doesn't have this. It may be something that can be improved but it probably something you're born with... fast twitch muscle fibers.

So have to bump this thread one more time I started when I was trying to recover after the Drake collapse in the Des Moines airport …just had great random chat at Gaylord Nat Harbor steakhouse bar with a guy named Charles Hatcher who played high school bball with Quinton Burton and knew Tyler as a young kid - Charles played at Loyola Maryland …

We probably don't appreciate him as much as we should because of the lack of winning. While he was out best prospect and leading scorer last year, I think everyone will remember and tag Gilyard and Golden as the leaders of the team and then Grace heroics down the stretch.

And this year - while he is putting up good numbers, the team is .500 right now. I think we would appreciate it more if the winning was there, especially this year, but unfortunately - I think Burton has to hope he turns on some heroics in the A10 tourney to get to the NCAA.

Tyler was great last year. he's an even better player now.
I don't think this team is as good as last, but I do think we'll be playing our best basketball at the right time. we'll see if it's enough.
