Had the last 5 minutes not happened and we all felt relatively great tonight at 3-1, where does Tyler’s brilliant game today against a very solid team rank in terms of personal contribution in Spider history post the Tarrant years? No question in my mind that the only way we make the tourney is that all of our post grad seniors realize Tyler holds the torch now.

We haven't had many 30-point games. Jarod and Greg Stevenson both had one or more, as I recall. Did Skrocki have one? I'm sure KA did. TJ too. Anyone else I'm forgetting? Maybe Brothers and Kendall at some point?

Gilly, Golden, and Sherod have all had 30-point games. TJ had at least a couple. I know SDJ had at least one too.

Stevenson brothers were sure fun to watch. Tyler showed maturity today in avoiding first half fouls that botched a number of games his first two years.

Right and those were great games clearly but Tyler’s game today came in a hostile, loud crow setting against a team likely to make the tourney, Can’t want to see him what he does on Monday night.

Harper probably had one too, and it might have been in that epic away game at X that I think we lost in double OT. That might be the last true road game at a really good opponent where we had an effort like this one.

SDJ had 30 in a loss at VCU...that counts as hostile.

Harper had one 30-point game at home against GW as a senior. He only had 15 in the double OT loss at X.

Dan Geriot had a 31 point game at La Salle on January 9, 2008. 11 of 13 shooting. Hostile environment? Well it was on the road.

Pretty sure Brothers had a 40 point game in his career. Greg Stevenson had a 40 point night one as well. Great individual games like that only become lore if you get the W.

Brothers had 39 in a blowout win over Charlotte and 38 in a win against ODU.

Stevenson never got there either, it appears. The record book shows eleven 40-point games in UR history, six of them by McCurdy. Nobody since then has gotten there.

Was ODU the Bazemore shootout?

"Nobody since then has gotten there." ...Yet ;)

Thanks for the correction. I remember Brothers game against ODU fondly. I was pretty sure that Stevenson had one against McNeese St. but perhaps it was a high 30's game.

Bazemore had 20 in that game. He had 22 against us the year before.

Found it. Stevenson had 38 vs. McNeese State in 2001. So close.

Hope his wrist is ok after the block. He was shaking and holding it.

Written on 12/16:

44. Tyler Burton, F, Richmond | Junior

Height: 6' 7" | Weight: 215 | Age: 21

An athletic, Swiss Army–knife forward who’s flown a bit under the radar, Burton has built some buzz as a second-round sleeper and potentially useful role player. He plays with energy, finishes well with both hands, won’t need designed touches to be effective and should be able to defend wings and forwards. Burton has shot the ball extremely well from distance to start the year, and while it’s likely not sustainable, his jumper will be a key swing skill.

He keeps getting better and better. I hope he doesn't jump to soon to the NBA. Second round picks often don't last long. If he is patient, he could be a solid 1st round pick and have a long NBA career. This team is going to have a lot of guys going pro to various leagues.

Tyler is shooting it great from 3, like 97, this writer does not seem convinced that his shooting is sustainable :)

He does have the very high arc on the three ball. It is interesting though, I recall watching a video in which a guy analyzed all this data, including using one of those balls with the chip inside to come up with the ideal arc. Then compared to NBA shooters, and surprise surprise the ideal arc was pretty much identical to that of Steph Curry.

Not comparing Tyler to Curry , but it seems to me that Tyler's arc is quite similar and probably somewhere in that ideal arc range. Wondering if a "shot doctor" worked with him on this, or has always been his normal shot. I do seem to recall that his 3 ball has been high arcing, which when off can miss badly but the percentage very good.

If we had #43 on this ranking starting next to Grant, we would be in the top 15. Love watching Trevion WIlliams play, 1st team all conference last season, now coming off the bench for 7'4 guy, but has great attitude and energy every single play.

Exactly. His game has matured and grown so much from his fresh/soph year when early foul trouble was often seen and occasional unproductive emotion. He is the total professional now - recall reading before UNI game he made sure to have a pre-game shoot at like 6am to 7am at their arena with a few others because the charter got in so late that night.

Since he is will be 22 in January (with the extra year he took after high school), if this magical season continues and he is a solid early to mid 2nd round or even 1st round pick by then, I can't see him not taking the plunge and going for it. Hopefully, Robins continues to be loud and crowded for the rest of Tyler's time with us.

I'm not a basketball coach, but I think that high arc can only help his shooting percentage. It's like a golfer hitting an approach shot to the green for 75 yards. If you hit a three-iron, you're not going to like the results. If you hit a wedge, you give yourself much more margin for error. Kinda surprised more guys don't shoot it like that, honestly.

Agree EL, seems like a basic concept, quick google search turns up different results on the ideal arc.

Kendall Anthony had a pretty line drive shot and FT from what I recall, and shot about 80+ on FT's, but maybe that would have been 90's.

Will be very interesting to see what happens with Burton next year. Thinking workouts and combine could determine whether he is back next season.

I like him as a wing, and not having to guard and play inside, but if he is gone our interior is going to be crazy weak next season for defense and rebounding. Interested to see how Walz performs senior season.

We're living in a world where an A10 guard (you know who) who shoots 44% overall and 37% from three in his final year of college can be a first-round draft pick. Here's Burton shooting 54% and 46% from three so far, plus getting almost double the rebounds of said player. He sure looks the part of a potential first-round pick, but I hope we get him for another year.

Tyler please stay a Spider for another year after this. Concerned about a bigger name college basketball program picking him up as a transfer since transferring has become so easy. Great part of his game is his boundless energy; that no matter what kind of play he has just made he is ready and leading on the next play whether offensive or defensive. No matter what enjoy watching him play.

I'm not concerned at all about him transferring. I'd be very surprised. Mooney and UR have done everything a guy could want as far as his developement and visibility. he's improved a ton in a short time and he's being noticed.

but I've always been concerned he'll leave to go pro early. he has the athleticism and the shot. this year he added a lot of strength. and his defense is getting much better. I personally think he could add more ball handling. if he stays he will.

but if he keeps up his play and is told he'll be a late 1st rounder, then you have to go. sometimes teams will offer a guaranteed multi year deal to 2nd rounders. if that's the case, I htink you still go. while I think we have talent next year, it's hard to predict we'll be as strong as this year. he'd have a lot to risk if he stays and we struggle.

I'm torn on whether it would be better for him to go pro or stay. Next year he would definitely be "the man" and have another year of work under his belt, but he's already showing that this year. But next year does he go for 40 a night? Or does he get handcuffed because defenses focus more on him?

I'm not sure I see a first-rounder yet, but there's still a lot of the season left.

Completely agree with low chance of him transferring given how it's clear he's the go to go now. To me, best case is that he keeps doing what he is doing, earns A10 POY and gets us to the tourney as at large (prayers and luck needed) or by winning A10 tourney in DC. Then, we wish him well and see him back in a few years for alumni reunions when he is having a solid or better NBA career.

(NOTE: I have to say I was worried last March about a transfer when all post grads decided they were coming back but that time is long past. )

Tyler is also 5 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier than said player. If he’s able to continue shooting like this, I think he’s a first round pick. The only argument against him would be his age. He’ll be 22 at the end of the season and NBA scouts love the 18 year old with potential more than anything else in the world. I think he’s shown his ability to continually improve, and that will help him

I also agree there is a low chance of him transferring. The coaching staff has done a great job in helping him develop into an elite player. Sounds like he is a very coachable player and eager to learn.
