The Official Retain Coach Mooney Thread

My initial reaction is still the same. I like Coach Mooney, I want him back as our coach. He is the 3rd best Bball coach Richmond has ever had. However, I do not see how he survives this. They did fired Bill Dooley for less. I would have thought they would have made an announcement by now.

No question he’s back. Easy decision to keep the squad together. Mooney said the best starting five ever, certainly disagree with that. However, it’s really good and suddenly you have a quality bench. Starting five of Golden, Cayo, Sherod, Francis and Gilyard is comparable to any group in the league. Suddenly you have Wojcik, Gustavson, Grace, Yates (maybe) and Sal off the bench. That’s 10 deep plus the freshman. On top of that you save a year or two on the buyout and if he does well Mooney possibly even gets extended after next year. The fear has to be with all of the turmoil, chatter, billboard, etc. some of these kids will jump the second Mooney gets the axe. Coach stays.

There have been guys who have left without any chatter, billboard, etc. over the years as well, lets not forget that.I think if some leave it has to do with the terrible record over the last two years, imo.

Why is it that we are supposed to approach every potential change with a sense of tremendous fear and trepidation? As in, Oh my god, if we fire a coach, all our awesome players will definitely leave!

Really? They'll all leave because the guy who guided them to 25-40 over the first half of their collegiate careers is gone? Give me a break. Either a) they aren't as good as we all think they are, because they went 25-40 mostly on their own merits or lackthereof, or b) they are that good but the coach didn't know how to use them effectively and put them in the best position to win.

Those are the two options. So from where I sit, hiring a new coach is good either way.

All these VCU fans with so much support for Mooney is all Hardt should need to realize it’s time for Mooney to go. If you want him so bad ask Rhoades to add him to his staff. You already have 27 guys in suits sitting behind your bench at games. What’s one more?

Eight Legger sums it up perfect. This is the right time to make a change. Unfortunately I just don’t see it happening. Which means for the first time since graduation I won’t be renewing my season tickets next year.

Mooney said the best starting five ever, certainly disagree with that.
He said best class ever - since Golden, Sherod and Francis will all be scholastic Seniors but basketball Juniors they are now in the same "class" as Cayo and Gilyard. While it is likely that those are our starting five next season, "best starting five ever" is not what Mooney claimed. We have had better starting fives that weren't all in the same class.

I believe that he believes it. It's a carefully phrased non-provable statement; the kind people who don't want to be held accountable make.

Hard to argue that those are the two options after going 25-40 the past 2 years. Good point.

Problem is, you should be right. These are mostly good points that make sense. But we've seen this show before. It's been "we are close" or "next year" or "if ____ doesn't transfer or get injured" for far too long now.

Color me stupid, but I thought they came here because of the University of Richmond and it's affiliations. If the only reason that they came here was because of Mooney, then if Mooney goes, how does transferring change anything? Unless they are just going to drop out and see if Mooney ends up somewhere else, then enroll in Mooney's new school.

That's why the whole argument about players transferring if Mooney leaves is a complete fallacy.

Won 30 games this year. Why isn't he mentioned more in the "next coach" carousel? Bet he and his wife, both from Roanoke, would like to get back to Virginia.
Well, I hear rumblings that he is a jerk.
Of course, at one time I was touting Gregg Marshall, and folks said he was a jerk. Sooooooooo.

On a serious note, I can't quite figure out this guy - Turner. But, 30 wins is not easy I don't care which league. Turner was a high school teammate of top 5 all time Spider Curtis Blair. As well as George Lynch.

Then Curtis would be a great source to interview.

Turner was a two-time all American at Hampden Sydney. I think he would be a good hire.

Hardt had been spending lots of time in his office this weekend, from what I understand. So stay tuned.

That's exactly why CM should have been sacked earlier in the season!

#NoMoreMooneyTruthing
don't know why you're sticking to that. nobody fires midseason. you fire the day after the conference tournament.

Coaches get canned mid-season all the time in multiple sports. There were plenty of opportunities to do it naturally this past season.

I know that train has left the station, but it would have given us a leg up over the other schools who waited.

we're talking college basketball. it's rare.

All VCU fans coming out of the woodwork to support Mooney. Lol. Classic.

Actually, I preferred he go as to us having a better chance of beating you in the near future. Mooney is a good coach, but there is a * next to that. He hasn't built a strong program with a strong bench to sustain year to year. I said it before, UR will win more games by having him back than if they make a change this year. Let that contract ride another year as long as the players still support him. Hardt made the right decision. ( and again, I don't like Mooney)
