Sy is a two star recruit. The Spiders have a high three star recruit coming in at his position. No wonder.

I wish we had been, I don’t think we can have enough guys competing for the 4 spot right now.
I don’t think school was a high priority for Sy from what I heard. May have had trouble keeping him in school down the line. UMass will be no problem.
Yes, we just picked up a kid with seemingly no other offers and lost a kid who had a nice array of offers. But, I'm glad you found some ranking service that gave him one of them a 2 star and another a 3 star, so you can continue to live in your bubble that Mooney only recruits the best players.
To be fair, verbal commits has Andre as a 2 Star, and lists every other site as NA for his ranking (which confirms what I’ve seen looking him up on those sites).

That being said, I liked what I saw from Sy, thought he was more of a 3 to Sal’s 4, and we could’ve used him.
However, just because we didn’t get him doesn’t mean he’s chopped liver or wouldn’t have fit or academics aren’t important to him or we already have better players at his position. Similarly, just because Mooney didn’t close the deal doesn’t mean that we aren’t looking at similarly skilled players or aren’t going to bring in similarly skilled players or we don’t already have good players recruited at his position.
It’s very rarely one extreme or the other.

Sal had a better offer sheet than Sy, but we got in on Sy after we had already secured Sal, so Ulla's logic that we don't need Sy doesn't pass the sniff test. Of course, this is classic Ulla, pumping up a recruit as a great fit, until he signs elsewhere and then he cherry picks what is wrong with them and says we have better players already on board.
Time will tell if Sy or Andre is the better player, especially since they should be playing against each other in the A-10 for years to come.
why does Ulla get criticized every time he posts? he's fully explained his position. he supports UR basketball 100%. his way. it's different than your way, but so what?

I haven’t been able to find any other site (other than verbal commits) who has a ranking for him. And on verbal commits he’s ranked as a 2 Star (See above post’s link).
So I would say there are a few scenarios that make sense for that preliminary ranking: it was from awhile ago by scout and recently there is not enough information for 247sports to give him a ranking; there are so many prospects out there that 247sports (or rivals or ESPN) has not had the time to properly scout him and therefore don’t feel comfortable giving him a ranking; or it was mis-typed at the time.
I don’t think that makes Andre a bad player/recruit (in fact I’m excited we have him!), but I think touting him as a 3 Star guy is stretching the truth, as the current available rankings do not support that assertion.
Yes I saw that. He appeared to have averaged 13 points against some of the better teams in Europe while not having his best shooting tourney. That is certainly hopeful...
Ulla, there are people on this board who expect Mooney to sign all 20 players he shows interest in every offseason. Of course it isn't possible but every single recruit that signs elsewhere is seen as a recruiting failure while every recruit we sign we can only get because they aren't very good.

Thanks Captain Obvious. I didn't know we couldn't sign every recruit we offer. We expect Mooney to sign the guys he identifies as his top prospects. Too often, we are down on his 3 or 4th options as to the guys we sign.
I think it is safe to say after a 12 win season and losing two of your best players that our program is not exactly trending upward. Ulla's Baghdad Bob routine gets a little tiresome when you see at the actual state of the program.
Yes, the routine would work much better if we were coming off of a round of 32 appearance, instead of year 7 and no NCAA's - getting smoked AGAIN in OOC - this time by crappy teams. AND losing 2 of our best players that were expected back.
But your Negative Nancy routine gets a little tiresome as well. The point I was making is that it is ironic to criticize the positive posters when you're doing the exact same thing on the negative side.
I know you obviously know we cannot sign every recruit, just a bit of sarcasm to try and make a point. Just like there are posters that are positive there are posters that are negative. And both criticize the other for being overly positive/negative while they themselves do the same on the other side.

This is the first time since the 2006-2007 season that Mooney has had a losing record in OOC play.

Yes, but 3 out of 4 years we have tanked bad enough that we have not shot at an at large - that is being smoked.
Just differences of opinion on the phrase I guess. There's no scenario where I'd consider a winning record being smoked.
Edit: Actually I think you're right...we did get smoked and De'Monte was the one doing the smoking...

Geez, maybe I wouldn't be a "Negative Nancy" if we actually had something positive happen in relation to the basketball program. Give me something to be positive about and I will gladly be positive.
However, thus far our spring signing period after our 12 win year when we were told, we are so young, just wait till next year when ALL our players are back. And then boom, we lose 2 of our best players and have thus far replaced them with some kid from Finland that has no D-1 offers.
Unless Rob Jones starts playing with matches again and burns the Robins Center to the ground next week, things really couldn't be getting that much worse for our basketball program right now.
ok but other than the possibility of adding a couple of new recruits, there's no good news coming until November. we can't win games we don't play. so should we expect the negative nancy routine daily until then? because you think that will enact change?

We had ample opportunity for positive this offseason. Bring everyone back. FAIL. Get some impact college level transfers eligible now (FAIL - couldn't get IVY league, couldn't get JUCO or anything in between). Got two recruits - one that likely will not have nearly the impact of Fore or Buck would have the coming year, and one that definitely will not since not eligible. So negative nancies were ready to jump on the positive bus, but Mooney could not accomodate us.
