Swimming

Four divers on the roster, but it appears only two are in Ohio and one of them is in a boot (but diving). Spiders starting out in a hole.

The Spiders took 3rd in the 800 free relay, so they tied GW for the most swimming points in the kickoff session with 72, but a lack of diving scoring is killing the Spiders as they sit tied for third overall.

GW comfortably out in front, but the Spiders moved up to second tonight. Abby Fuller missed the gold in the 50 free by a hundredth of a second, while the 200 free relay took bronze to wrap up the evening session. Several other Spiders scored good points in championship finals as well.

Only one podium finish for the Spiders tonight with Katelynn Pennell taking bronze in the 100 back, but a number of solid swims by the Spiders. Got a couple of points out of diving with Harrington coming in 15th, and they're done with the women's boards now so UR won't have that weakness to contend with tomorrow as things wrap up. GW is on cruise control with the Spiders heading up the rest of the pack.

Spiders wrapped up the championship meet in second place as expected. No race podiums for the Spiders tonight, but a bunch of good-scoring finishes earned them enough points to easily hold their position. 3rd–5th in the team race was incredibly close with just one point separating them.

Something happened with senior Spider sprinter Lauren Medlin. She swam pretty well in the opening medley relay Wednesday and the 50 free on Thursday, but then she was scratched out of the 200 free yesterday, was two seconds off her school record time in the 100 free today and didn't make it back for finals (her best time would have won the event tonight), and then wasn't even used on the 400 free relay to close out the meet. Must have been injury or illness...really a shame.

Former Spider (current Tennessee) coach Matt Kredich's 24-year-old son was hit and killed by an impaired driver near the UT campus yesterday. The driver had been found OD'd and unresponsive by EMTs two hours earlier and was taken to the hospital. Sounds like he hit Ben immediately after being discharged.
