State of the Program

Within the deleted thread there was not a word written that was degrading, hurtful or demeaning of a player or coach except to give opinions on performance or strategy. Any insults were between posters and for the most part those that take part in such banter can take it since they are dishing it out. It's a part of the program and a part of what makes posting interesting for many. i don't understand why a moderator or other posters would be so sensitive and offended by banter or name calling between posters unless vulgar or racist. But that is this board and why this board is a bore. Adios.

Over 700 people transfer in D1 basketball last year, which means on average each recruiting class has over 700 transfers if we take this to be a normal transfer number. Some quick math reveals that each recruiting class consists of ~1200 players. This means that about 60% of D1 players transfer during their careers. I count 11 of Mooney's 34 recruits transferring, so we have not been as affected as many other schools by the process. As for redshirting I don't know the numbers and can't comment on how we compare to other D1 teams.

A big reason for transfers is playing time. Doesn't matter if the talent is there or not.....every recruited player expects to play! If we cannot recruit and judge talent better then we are doomed to repeat our success level or possibly fall further behind our competition.
I watch a lot of basketball and more good teams than not have freshman making contributions. That's where our recruiting must be! Tired of the worn out excuses. Heard them all over and over. We will never have a deep enough bench without getting better job done recruiting and getting our freshmen up to speed before their junior year.

if freshmen are playing, a sophomore will transfer. what's the difference? 13 ships, only playing 8 or 9 tops. 4 unhappy players. that's why there are 700 transfers. there's no way around it. and that's ok.
of course we want the best players possible. and we're getting the best players possible. if you think we'll regularly attract top 100 ranked guys then you're delusional.

Between 2010-2014, 25% of our recruits transfer out because they don't have the talent, that to me says a lot about our recruiting ability. And another 18% left for other reasons. I don't find it too tough to figure out why continually have a short bench each year.

Wayne Sparrow, Luke P, Chandler Diekvoss, Kadeem Smithen, Tim Singleton.... The best players possible, that's a good one.

And there is a HUGE difference between attracting Top 100 guys and recruiting guys who can play Division 1 basketball at an A-10 level.

Where did you read that we need to recruit top 100. Only said that we need to recruit players that are not developmental and can at least contribute enough minutes to allow starters to get a little rest. We only went 7 deep against St Joes and we had Jesse and Julius riding the pine. Very little game time experience equals low confidence by coach.
Where were the sophomores? Other than Khwan we only had juniors and seniors playing.
I guess bottom line is you play your best players and if that is only 5 guys then we got to do a better job of evaluating talent.

By the way, I am delusional. Have been for 50 years. Guess that's why I have had season tickets all these years. Can't stop now:rolleyes:

Why don't you guys just talk to each other in French or Latin. That way l for one wouldn't be bothered by anything you say. Mainly because it took me two summer schools to complete my foreign language requirement at UR.
Je plaisante

In plain English, you don't have to read it, dude

focusing on the wrong thing. 13 players and only the top 8 or 9 will play. that's the case even if all 13 are all-Americans. unless you have guys leaving early for the NBA, 4 guys are sitting on a bench. some will never play, or will have to get better as they mature to play. some will transfer.

As an aside from the conversation about coaching philosophy, etc.....

I'm not sure I understand the fascination with recruiting misses. EVERY team has them. It's just the nature of this game. Each team has 13 scholarships yet with very few exceptions no team plays more than about a 9 or 10 man regular rotation, with 8 seeming to be the norm. Thus all 350+ d1 teams have 4 or 5 scholarship players that see little or no floor time. That's just the way it is.

In the right situation enough of those 4 or 5 stick around 3 or 4 years and eventually gain playing time, but again that is not the college basketball world we live in today. Players think they are starter quality and transfer around more than ever and it affects every team.

Edit: spiderman you just beat me to it

Sorry Rick. Guess I'm not any better at trying to lighten things up than I am at evaluating our basketball program.
I'll just leave that up to the experts on the board from now on.
Adios dude.

UR goes up to URI and loses their second game in a row to the mediocre Rams.

Meanwhile, those other Rams down Broad Street go up to St. Joe's, play horribly for 30 minutes, battle the officials, watch Isaiah Miles have the best game of his life, and come from behind to score 85 points and win 85-82. Coach Wade, Melvin Johnson, and Mo Alie-Cox are some studs! Let's Go VCU!

Enjoy the NIT... again. Sorry! I enjoy your banter here, though.

C'mon man, no need to troll their boards. UR will be just fine. You guys struggled last year and found your stride, it's still very early in conference play. I'm very much looking forward to VCU playing a STRONG Spiders squad

I had to, with the way UR fans have insulted our players here, especially Mo.

I'm all for tanking the rest of the season, then going all-in in the A10 tourney, winning that and then becoming the first 16 seed to win a game against a 1.

And I'm sure Lamb nation has never uttered a derogatory word about a UR player on their board.

Please pontificate some more on why our recruiting misses don't hurt us. Maybe if one or two of those misses had been hits, maybe we wouldn't have to run Trey and deion out there for 30 minutes a night for 3 years running. Maybe we would have a rugged interior defender or a 3 point specialist on our roster, instead of a 7 man rotation. Keep on believing if you wish though.

What pisses me off is not the fact we are now 8-6 but it is how we lose. Horrific foul shooting (55%) and there is no excuse for
that especially from upper classmen; a defense that no longer confuses anyone, plus your top two defenders in DT and Trey are
no where near where they use to be; absolutely no depth or fire other then when Fore comes in the game; tonight our players on
the floor spent more time complaining about no calls, then talking on defense and finally I don't see any fire from Coach Mooney.
He needs to throw a coat, get a T, just show some old emotion to get this team fired up.

The commentators were talking about RUI defense and honestly if we had made some of those close in shots we missed and hit
more front ends of foul shots it could have been a different game. Offensively we got the shots obviously shooting 50% but we also
missed some close in shots. Defense is what is killing us. Mooney change it up, please!
