Spider Men's Basketball Tip-off Happy Hour - Wed 11/1

We attended, nice event. Very good crowd. But I haven't paid enough attention off season to say whether anything he said was particularly surprising. Maybe someone else can chime in on that part.

Here are my rough notes from last night - agree with Palm that crowd was bigger than last year. If anyone else who attended thinks I got anything wrong, please correct.

  • Larger group attended than last year’s event
  • Big on King being one of our best scorers in the recent path
  • Hunt is going to be a vocal and aggressive point guard. Glad he has 2 more years.
  • Dji has been playing the best this fall but going to give Aiden opportunity to start (but sort of suspect short leash based on comments) Roche also competing for time. Dji playing as a forward will get more opportunities to shine per Coach.
  • Bigelow will be our best rebounder and will start.
  • Quinn, 3rd team A10 preseason, will of course stats. Coach wants Quinn to focus on scoring more than passing.
  • We will be a very fast team (except for Quinn in Coach’s own words)
  • Praised Walz as improving a lot and when he subs for Quinn will normally be biggest guy on the court.
  • Talked a lot about Mikkel from Canada and Ryan Soulis from Asheville/Greece. Told the story which I knew from a friend that Coach had taken Ryan to Stella’s and to Greek festival when he was on his visit in early summer.
  • Not much about freshman pt guard Trevor Smith
  • We plan to Press a lot
  • Someone asked if we would run a modified Princeton offense – Coach interpreted that we would likely get shots off earlier this year given our speed.
  • Coach sees our out of conference schedule is tough and one of hardest in A10 with us likely playing 4 high majors.
  • Scheduling remains tougher than ever – unlikely we will ever see Power 6 schools playing us at Robins
  • NIL collective is well structured and run professionally. Operated by 3rd consultant / pool of money that is divided up / contracts have been signed with players / goal is to increase $$ for ppl who don’t transfer and stay at UR all 4 years

"contracts have been signed with players / goal is to increase $$ for ppl who don’t transfer and stay at UR all 4 years"

This is correct 😀

I agree with Section9 summary. CM joked with all Greek people and Greek flags at festival that Ryan must have thought Richmond was founded by Greeks. Said it was not planned to bring him here during Festival event, but worked out. Also said people recognized Ryan at event.

Still really wish we could work a deal with Stella's to take over concessions at Robins ...

that's a great idea that I hadn't thought of either.

so do all freshmen get the same amount, then all sophs get a bit more, then juniors, etc ... in the collective?
is nothing negotiated separately for top guys vs bench players?

(thanks to all who recapped the event! much appreciated!)

Great question - Chris didn't talk in those specifics but I would be surprised if the division of funds was the same for all players in the same class since it sounded like an external "general manager" was involved that handled all of the contracts so suspect some analysis and metrics in play to determine $$ amount

will add spoke with an assistant coach after event who said unprompted Dji was most improved from last year on team.
might just be that he's had a healthy stretch now.

but I do love the move to forward (or if we want to call it a 3 guard lineup). he has an advantage there with his handle and passing. his defense can play 1-3.

feels like Dji has done more then Noyes or Roche this offseason. I do understand starting Noyes since the lineup lacks perimeter shooting. we really need Noyes to start quickly. he might be the key to what our ceiling is.

I agree, playing on the wing benefits us because he does have those guard skills and can put it on the floor. With his size there will prob be some mismatches that we can take advantage of.

On the OOC, I have a question for 2011...

When does KenPom add OOC SOS? And does it start with only games already played or all 12 known games?

So what I’m reading from this is there is strong guard play expected, including the guard skills Dji brings to the wing and Tyne from off bench.

What I’m not hearing is we have shooters or that frontcourt scoring will have any consistency.

My hope is that Quinn makes all the 3 footers this year and Bigelow remembers that he shoots 80+% from FT line and 29% from 3, and decides to drive way more often. And that Moon remembers that Roche is on the team and is far and away the best shooter.

thanks for the recap section 9. Great to hear about Dji and the NIL info, etc.

Am concerned not hearing boo about Roche or Noyes this offseason. Was hoping to hear that Bigs re-found his shot. Based on the scrimmage 3 point numbers, and historical numbers for Hunt - very concerned about 3 point shooting again. And while I like the sounds of our speed, and the pressing more part - just not sure that we can line up and out athlete teams. That seems very rare for us.

Mooney brought up Noyes and Roche as standing out in podcast interview ~3 weeks ago.

I speculated about seeing us press lot more after the “speed” article so interesting to see Mooney confirm. Tho best laid plans can change.

Yes thanks for sharing detailed report Section9.

Better late than never. We had the horses to do this a few times in the last couple years but only saw it in small spurts (mostly effectively, I would add). I hope this translates into more fast-breaking on offense, too, especially given how fast we are. Maybe losing Nelson to vcu finally opened Mooney's eyes to the reality that we need to change our style a bit and just let guys play ball a little more.

I am not sure. Those SOS numbers might only include games that have been played, so we might not know kenpom's full OOC SOS ranking for Richmond until conference play begins.

Also, we'll never do that tactically under Mooney, even if it fits the personnel best.

Agreed. It looks on paper we are not going to be a great 3 point shooting team again, which means, we are going to bomb about 30 3's on most games, just let we did last year, and then Moon will pontificate in the post game that we just need to shoot better.

I would be absolutely shocked if the offense we run this year is any different than the offense we ran last year or in recent years prior. It feels like some of you aren't familiar with our coach.

The "press" employed is a half-assed one guy at point and two guys at midcourt, and generally appears to be designed to make the team take an extra 3-5 seconds to get the ball upcourt. Rarely is it aggressive and deployed to cause turnovers. With the notable exceptions of URI and Dayton in the A-10 tourney. Mooney is not comfortable with the byproducts of an aggressive trapping press, which is that sometimes you give up easy baskets. Not passing judgment on which approach is better, just saying that it's not going to happen. And the half-press doesn't count.

Yep and what is frustrating is that we do commit to a "real" full court press, it actually works. Can't press the entire game but certainly our press when fully deployed I think usually pays good dividends. And if coach wants everyone to be AGGRESSIVE, a press is certainly one way of making that happen.

This reminds me of the guys in the NBA (at least J Tatum says it alot) in interviews: "It's a hit or miss league". Just need to make more shots :):). Just like some posters on here, like Tom Brady's ex: Mooney can't shoot it for them.

Mooney was great, particularly in his frank response to the NIT rule changes.

we've discussed not liking developmental redshirting with the current transfer rules. but barring injuries, you just can't play 14 guys. if nobody redshirts, 2 or 3 guys for sure will be miserable. I like that Mooney has discussions but leaves the choice to the player. I think Tyne and Soulis will get some burn. but it's really crowded on the wing.

Delonnie is so likeable. he's a great interview.
