Solomon Hainna - 2016 JUCO Offer

Does he have some Midwest connection? Odd that the teams he's mentioned with are us, then Drake/IPFW/Valpo/Evansville.

Losing a recruit to Evansville would be a new low for the program. Let's hope it doesn't come to this.

Looks like it's Evansville for Solomon.Too many holes in the transcript most likely.
Woulda been a good add for us with 2 years of eligibility and filled a gap for us this year and next.Oh well.

We need to remember that Mooney and Rocco have very little pull with administration. Its very important that the AD goes to war with them. I had heard last week that the administration was messing with this admission.

In that case, what in the world is the AD doing? This is a complete joke. Unless the admin has been giving Mooney some leeway and those guys have done the job in the classroom, then I could understand. Mooney has been bringing in good guys and students - at least the majority from what I can tell. Gill needs to step up and quit being a baby yes man and go to bat.

Our administration cared more about his grades from 6 years ago than his JUCO grades. This is complete BS. Soloman would have been a great Spider!

It is what it is. The Ulla is quite happy with our current roster. Would be great to add another power forward, but if not, we ready! Roll Spide! OSC

Does anyone really know that it was an academic problem? I have yet to see any evidence of his grades being the reason for his choosing Evansville over UR.

Ulla, wish I could share the enthusiasm. I like our guys....BUT, we need more quality depth inside and someone who can actually be a threat next to TJ.

PF - Really like the looks of him and his size and I think he can be a contributor at some point, but missing off season with a foot injury, and two years removed from ACL. Just a few minutes of experience at the college level.
TJ - Great player, should have a big year. Will have to play big minutes, stay out of foul trouble, and hopefully not wear down from the big minutes.
Kwesi - Depth guy, like the looks of his size and athleticism, but he is here to eat minutes. Let's hope he can do it at a 20 minute clip some games.
Marshall Wood - MW is a guy that likes to score from the 3 point line, not a pivot as Fezz would say.
Grant Golden - Great looking prospect, but its a huge jump to D1 and the A10 - even from the competitive h.s. league he played in.
Bernard - I liked the looks of his last highlight tape (yes, I know it is highlights). He is a wing. Shows some good athleticism and ability to make plays, but not a guy that will guard a power forward.

I am worried about this frontcourt collectively. I like a lot of these guys individually and thing there is some potential, but for a proven guy opposite TJ? Not sure how this will work out, hopefully a couple of these guys mature and play at a good level now.

So here is the story from a source close to the situation.

His HS grades weren't great but he scored very well on the SAT. We all know he went into the Air Force outta high school for 5 years. He then went to Midland JUCO and got a 3.5 GPA. Mooney said the academic board would have to clear him and it would have taken until late June.

I hate the administration. This was a fine young man that we denied an opportunity to go to school at Richmond. Soloman should have been a Spider

Wow, that is almost worse to me, soooo he may have been cleared, but our basketball program doesn't have the pull (or the AD as someone noted above) to have this decision reviewed and expedited. What??? I guess I just don't know how these things work, but seems that admin is not working with hoops.

look at my posts 62, 67, & 74 -- this is the result I foresaw

Well, this is the kind of self-sabotaging garbage that is a complete joke. If we are going to invest $40M into the basketball program, then we MUST do what is necessary to compete at this level. If we are NOT going to do what is necessary and instead are going to put ourselves at a competitive disadvantage time and time again, then what is the point? Drop down to the Patriot League and cut the budget in half, undo the renovation, hire a coach out of high school and deny admission to anyone who ever got a C in his life.

If Mooney has been dealing with this nonsense the entire time, then I will take back some criticism of his recruiting efforts.

Eight, thanks. You should not be so constantly critical of Coach. Chris is a great guy and an outstanding coach. OSC

What is the primary mission of a university? To educate our future leaders, or to be a dominant sports powerhouse?

A dominant sports powerhouse that produces future leaders.

Without a doubt our mission is to educate young minds, to help mold them into strong and productive members of our society, and yes to develop leaders. But that doesn't mean that we can only start with kids that have already met those standards. It's much easier to keep the light burning with a kid that has already reached these standards than to pick good kids and turn that light on. Having been in education as an adjunct, and my wife being a retired teacher, my view is the rewards are much stronger seeing the light turn on for the first time.

A-10 is 7th rated conference in D-1; CAA is a top FCS conference.

Sure. Are we saying, on balance, that FCS-level football recruits have better high school resumes than top basketball players? Are they better than FBS football players?

I know these are coming across as "leading" questions, but they're not. I'm just curious.

Every school at our level admits kids who play sports and who wouldn't be admitted if they didn't. If we want to compete at this level, we need to do this too, plain and simple. If we are unwilling to do this, then we must move to a lower level.

I'm not suggesting we compromise our integrity, but we are not Stanford or Duke, either. We have to take some quality athletes who are also good kids, even if they don't check every single admissions box.

I would say there is a larger pool to choose from. A 2 or 3 star recruit is much more likely to be successful at the FCS level than the FBS level.

too bad. would have been a nice add, but I really like what we have. I know you all want competition and best guys play. that's of course true. but TJ will play all the minutes he can handle, and Marshall's going to be the best he's going to be as a senior. Golden will be a good player quickly, and quicker if playing. PF, for goodness sakes, needs to see the floor if healthy. Bernard and Kwesi and both grad transfers ... like Marshall, this is their best and last season. the sky's not falling. we're deep and will be strong in the front court.

Couple questions?

1. Are we sure we were his top destination?

2. This guy served 5 years in the Air Force. Does serving your country in a time of war, not count for anything in our admissions process? If so, I think many would take issue with that.

Just questions, I don't know the answers but would be nice to have some more info on this situation.

He was a depth piece. He would have been nice insurance in case of injury, but also a great guy to push others in practice and someone to let the starters rest with confidence in the second half of games that are all but won. So not a huge miss, but one that will matter a little. The question remains, did the admins goof this one up? I don't see enough information in this thread to say so for sure. At the very least, it looks like there's a disconnect between Mooney and the school.

2. That's a shame our academics couldn't see past their giant heads to see the value of bringing this student into our school.

Seems like Jenkins is a solid recruiter. Wesson liked him a lot too. Between him and Lewis, we may have the makings of a solid recruitment team.

Eight, agree. Think both Marcus and Kim are great recruiters. Looks like they may get us over the hump. Few think Chris is not a very good coach; he has just been lacking the talent and depth required to get the job done. OSC

He may have been this season, but I feel he would have been good in the Kwesi role the following year, since he has multiple years left. I feel he had a good chance of contributing along the way...

somewhat tongue in cheek...but hasn't the University been focused on diversity among the student body like a laser for the last several years?

seems like a military vet who happens to play basketball might fit into an under represented group on campus...veterans...for that matter are scholarship basketball players considered a part of a diverse campus?

hoping KG is fighting for the program...if Admissions really did prevent acceptance
