Sal Koureissi - 2018 Signee

I still say Johnny Newman and also another thin player who did extremely well, Tayshaun Prince at Kentucky were prime
examples of lean players with long wing span, that used their length, quickness and athleticism to accomplish what they
needed to do. Yes, he could put on some more weight but 6'9 guy who can handle the rock, shoot and act like a forward or
a point guard, I will take all day long!

“The ideal basketball player,” said Bob Myers, “would be 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-6 wingspan and still be able to shoot.”

Kevin McHale supposedly had an 8'0" wingspan. ridiculous.
Sal's built like Kevin Durant when he was young. both 6'9" ish with a 7'5" wingspan.
Durant's gotten much stronger since, and seems to have gotten taller too.

Maybe we should just go with it and change our chant to "We are! R U ?"

pretty amazing how often this happens. you'd think someone putting out an official release would check if they weren't sure.

Guys, please don't scare some of our Spider faithful into thinking that our commitment did not happen. My take-away, after going through all the above posts, twice, is that Sal did sign his LOI with UR today, and everything is fine. Can someone confirm that the posts about losing Sal on a technicality to some university in England (Richmond University) were just intended to be borderline humorous?

I get that Iona's press release may have listed our school name incorrectly, but can we just calmly bask in the positive vibes of getting Sal on-board and not give any heart attacks to some of our older posters?

If that school in the UK has the same university crest Sal is wearing in the picture I think we have a strong copyright case. Unless they have Spyder's lawyers.

Thanks, just wanted to be sure that the news continues to be positive going into our game on Friday. Can't wait for this season to get underway, with lots of positive vibes....

I just hope Sal isn't watching our games and getting buyer's remorse...

If I had to read your posts, I would get buyer's remorse for sure!! Some players can dream that they could make the difference. None of the guys go into each games looking to play bad. I was a high school basketball coach (J.V.), we were very young and inexperience. We couldn't buy a game, my players felt very bad. I remember telling them that the teams we play better enjoy themselves now because our time will come. Each game we played were learning moments for all of us. The end results were that we became a winning team, even winning the j.v. championship. Its not what happens to you, it is important how you respond!!!

It still HAS to be discouraging to see the school you signed a LOI to play ball for doing so badly. Most of these kids want to play and to win.

Are you interested in a collegiate head-coaching job, by chance? I have one in mind for you if so!

Sal's high-school season will likely be starting soon. Do any of our posters have an interest in linking the fanbase to updates on how Sal is doing? It would be great to see that Sal is having a nice senior year, and maybe we get lucky and he "blows-up" like Jacob Gilyard did as a senior.... Anyway, since we only have one incoming recruit, it should be easy enough to follow him and to comment on his box-scores. I will be interested in his 3-point shooting %, and his foul shooting %, in particular, but expect his scoring average to be up significantly from the roughly 10-points per game I understand he scored as a junior. Anybody interested in posting updates on Sal, or know when his first game will be played?

This sounds like a perfect job for...Oldie!

+1 05!

Thanks for the link. For anyone else who might be interested in a recruit who could be a difference-maker for us, Sal will be playing a 24-game schedule, starting on 12/2 (this Saturday) and ending in February. First 3 games are on 12/2, 12/5, and 12/8. We should know a lot more about Sal's skills in roughly 10-12 days. I would be happy to access the above link and report back to the board on how Sal is doing (Per Mr. TBone's recommendation)...

This is probably a dumb question and I am sure my board buddies will let me know that, but has this young man actually signed with us or still a verbal commit?

Looking forward to seeing him play.

GCarter, Thanks for the link to Iona's website. I just checked into it, in order to get updates on Sal's progress and I only find stats for one game for him. The good news is that he led his team in scoring, with 24 points. The bad news is that Lona has now played 5 games and I am not able to access the boxscores beyond the first game. Anyone have any suggestions (or a better link) for updating Sal's progress? If he were to keep up his 24 point scoring, which is not likely, this would qualify as a major improvement over his junior year, where I understand he averaged 10 points. Can anyone provide updates or a better link?

I don't Twitter so hope that 05 (or someone else who is interested) might be willing to keep us updated on Sal's senior season. Sounds like Sal may be close to doubling his scoring average from his junior year (10 PPG as a junior?), which would be great news....

Oldie FYI you don't have to have a Twitter account to see what people post. Just Google Iona prep Twitter and it's right there.

Googling Iona prep twitter worked well. Having reviewed the site, here is some good news from Sal's recent updates:

1. In the first 5-6 games of the season, Sal has had games where he scored 10, 15, 24 and 26 points. That looks like an average of roughly 18 points, which may qualify as "blowing-up," in a positive way.

2. Sal has a teammate, Bryce Willis, a 6-6 PG, who just committed to Stanford. Bryce had a recent game where he scored 14 points, had 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 blocks. It looks like Sal has quite a teammate, and one who will get him the ball in scoring position...

Sal definitely looks like a "winner" based on his early-season stats. Look forward to seeing him in a Spiders uniform.
