Rhode Island

Nice little run here that started with a clutch 3 from Gilly that was assisted by the 'out of control Francis' (just messing with you whampas, lol), some amazing FT defense, and a sweet jumper from Cayo.

we are often not smart for such a veteran team, but we are certainly playing better down the stretch than last two

Much better down the stretch and I'm happy they won, but they need to solve for their lack of interior defense.

Ugly, but a W over a top half A10 team. We have played all top half teams so far in conference, which should help us down the stretch. Gilly hitting 3s is huge for us. Defense was still not good. Have to get better there.

Very nice win against a solid team. Gilly played like an All-American guard. Grant also had a terrific game despite a lot of negative criticism from this board. We don't win as a team without Grant Golden. He is the most important guy on the team and one of the best centers we have ever had.

Agree with you 100% percent. It is the fact he is our most important player that makes his lack of effort and complaining to the refs so frustrating to me. I hate to see our leader playing the game, in my eyes, the wrong way.

Happy the Spiders won.

All starters in double figures with Gilly leading way with 3 pt barrage. As others have said, hopefully the slump is officially over.

Jekyll and Hyde game for Grant, offense vs defense. I don’t recall seeing 2 dunks in a game from him ever.

Rhode Island with the assist with horrible free throw shooting and excessive turnovers due to out of control play.

On to Mason fresh off a loss to the Broad St boys, but they showed some fight at the end of the game.

Think the criticism and praise for Grant tonight is all fair. He looked really tired towards the end of the game and that’s on Mooney for not playing Sal more and giving grant a rest. Honestly think Mooney has done a good job with this throughout the season but this is one of the first games grant looked really tired. Also think the lineup with Sal in for grant helps us on defense and doesn’t hurt much on rebounding.

No doubt, but grant played 34 minutes tonight while he only averages 27 this year. Thought that could explain his defensive lapses and lack of rebounds down the stretch tonight. We certainly needed him on offense tonight but thought Mooney could’ve give him a breather when we were up 5-7 in the middle of the 2nd half, then bring him back for the last 5 minutes or so

Maybe we can convince all our future opponents to hire David Cox as "guest head coach" for their games against us? Did Rhody have any game plan other than Fatts throwing up shots whenever the mood struck him?

Gilyard won this game vs. URI. URI shot 52 from the field and 40% from 3 - I think if I had told you this is what we are giving up before the game, we all would have said - uh oh. But our best player - Gilyard, stepped up and shot lights out. His three point shooting was the difference and got UR the victory. The other starters played well, but without Gilyard hot hand - this win becomes a loss. Nothing wrong with that - there are games every year where you expect your best player(s) to have nights like this and carry you and this was one of them.
Only concern is that outside of Gilyard - we were 2-10 from 3. Bench production is no longer concern because quite frankly, I just don't expect any. We need what we saw tonight - 5 starters in or near double figures.
Good win after bad loss to Bonnies. Now on to Mason who just gave VCU a tough game as well.

Mason is another physical team that gives CM led teams fits. Spiders will need to shoot well from 3.

I hate that you keep questioning Grant's effort. he gives 100%. strap to your back whatever it takes to get you to 265 lbs and go play 34 minutes.

we didn't play all that well again. solid job on the boards against a physical team though, plus a great assist to turnover ratio led by Jacob, Blake and Grant. but the difference today from our losses is Jacob made 3s. if his shooting is back, we'll be fine.

That makes sense if he had a 185 pound body to cary 265 but he has a 265 pound body to cary 265. I agree he gives effort, he's just soft.

I have no idea what that means. it takes a lot more energy to move 265 lbs than 185 lbs. that's basic physics. there are some physical freaks with incredible natural gifts despite large size. Grant's not one of those.
... he's just soft.
please stop insulting our players.

When Gilly shoots the ball like that, he is hands down A10 POY. I had Crutcher as probable POY before the year - but Dayton is that picture of dumpster on fire floating down the river now. And he is the player leader, so can't consider him. Hope this was the opening of the flood gates for Gilly. If so, this team can go on a tear through the A10. Would be nice to have Goose back. Very thin bench without him. Good to see Wilson getting minutes, love his athleticism and effort, but playing like a freshman.

It means he has muscle mass of a 265 lb man not a 185 lbs man with which to move the 265. That's basic biology. You're soft too.

Big take away from last night. IF Gilly can bring his full offensive arsenal, as he is fully capable of, this losing to Hofstra, St. Bonnie, bs that we've seen isn't going to happen.

Saw where he was quoted after that he was putting a lot of pressure on himself to do more and it seems like he got in a better mental place last night and we saw the results.

Hopefully, this busts him out of his offensive shooting slump. He was phenomenal last night and hopefully this performance really gets him going.

Two other observations from last night.

1. Grant talking smack to the Rhody big man was great. Love that type of passion and then he finished with a couple authoritative dunks. If Grant can manifest the anger he plays with against the other team vs. against the officials, that will be a good thing.
2. Wilson: Loved Mooney giving him some minutes in crunch time. Yeah, he missed a wide open 3, but the kid plays hard and getting this meaningful time is critical to his development.

The best part of that was either Mitchell or Walker - whichever one it was - got the warning from the ref about taunting....................I like Grant as a person and a player - think he feels "obligated" not to get into foul trouble................would be great if we had some other back up big body - (Weir fit the bill) -to spell Grant by throwing some weight around...................

Loved Mooney's postgame comments on Wilson. Shook Isaiah's hand as he came out of the game, and it was ice cold. Hard to shoot threes with nerves like that. Game experience will get him over that hump. I like a lot of things I see from him, so just need to get him time on the court.

This is why playing him some in OOC would have been valuable. Either way, he is needed to help the team now. Get him the time so that if Blake or Gilly is in foul trouble or ailing in March, we can be comfortable Wilson can be ready. And considering the back to back nature of the tournaments, we those 34 minutes of Gillys team can be at 99% energy rather than 38 minutes at 95% energy - it makes a difference!

Agreed. Wilson is getting some minutes now though. Will be interesting to see what happens when Goose returns. Our bench didn't do much at yesterday, although I thought Sal and Wilson both gave good efforts and contributed in ways that didn't show up in the box score. Still if your playing significant bench minutes, you should be making dents in the box score categories.

Wilson did play some in OOC. He played in 5 of our 8 OOC games and had games of 5, 5, and 13 minutes.

VT, you know what we mean. He didn't play nearly enough to get comfortable in OCC games. Be realistic. He should have played more to be ready for A10 play. Glad he is playing now and I hope he continues to play when Goos comes back because I think he can score off the bench.

So play him 15 minutes a game OOC to "get him comfortable" and who cares if we are 6-5 instead of 8-3 right now? I like Wilson and look forward to seeing him out there, but you have to play your best guys as much as possible, especially when they are seniors and so good both offensively and defensively, and so important to everything we do. And with Wilson still learning more and more as a freshman, the worst time to give him a lot of minutes would have been during our OOC games.

Just wondering, have those that think we should play freshman more out of conference bothered looking at other teams out there? If they go eight deep, should they always play a few more guys out of conference too? Just in case they have injuries or something? No, of course not. Name me another team out there with NCAA tourney hopes who played a freshman not in their top 8 or so rotation a lot of minutes in OOC to "get them comfortable".

Unfair cheap shot. It's not lack of effort. The guy busts his butt every game. He is asked to do a lot offensively and defensively, and I would rather him give up a layup than pick up a fourth foul yesterday. I don't care who our backup is there. I want Grant on the floor down the stretch, and don't need him in foul trouble. We saw what happened with Burton a couple games ago. And, lack of depth has nothing to do with it. You want your best players on the floor down the stretch.
