Randolph Transferring

Will miss the positive attitude that Marcus always displayed. I guess all the talk about strong team chemistry inherited from CM is now another piece of history.

Looks like UR is going to be another turnstile program unless the high school recruiting can really pick up. I like the 2 freshmen coming in, but going to need more than 1 or 2 a class to have a chance of building an experienced team.

This is sad, Marcus was a real spark plug and had such a bubbly, positive personality. Was looking forward to the chemistry he had built over this season translate to more game experience. Best of luck, Marcus! Shine on!

Agree w that. Tough one I thought he had a role. Granted Nelson, Randolph and Dji were the biggest net negatives by the advanced analytics I saw but improvement was likely coming for all.

Good luck to Randolph I hope he finds a good spot. For him I wish he had 3 years left. The redshirt year was not worth it ultimately. And for schools the redshirt has less value with the grad transfer angle and transferring in general. So on some level give credit for stepping up but it was 29 minutes.

Now we r seeing the roster volatility. We really need Maddox in here. And I might be an echo but this was why you sign a guy like Bobby Durkin and not let Davidson take him. Mistake then mistake now. Transfers r guaranteed.

Losing Randolph really stings. Loved his energy and spark. That's what our team lacks the most under Mooney.

The one positive I had for Mooney is now lost. Thought the loyalty the players had for him was his biggest asset by a long shot in this new basketball era.

I really liked Randolph, and he seemed like a great teammate. But, I get his decision. We are still chasing scoring in the portal, and there was no guarantee he would consistently get good time next year, even with where we are now with our roster. I hope he finds a good spot, and look forward to following him as he continues on.

True, but most guys want to play a lot, and it seems like our guys have left mainly because of little or inconsistent playing time. The way the transfer rules are now, hard to fault anyone for leaving. I certainly get his decision and I wish him the best.

No! Damm@t. He was my favorite player to watch. Was expecting big things this year from him.

that's just the state of college hoops, sadly

Sometime in the future you might see this...

"Number 1 seeded Kentucky easily handled 16th seeded Delaware State in the first round of the tournament. During the first half Delaware State gave Kentucky all they could handle on the back of their star player's 18 points. But Kentucky worked out a 750K NIL offer for the player during half time, and then he proceeded to put up 20 second half points against his former teammates..."

Agree with everyone that Randolph was a fan favorite. He played with grit, determination, and as I like to say he had a lot of dog in him. Every team needs a Marcus Randolph on their team and from that perspective he will be sorely missed.

However, I was never able to see an upper echelon skill from Marcus that said he was going to be a starter level player on an A-10 championship contending team. Decent shooter but not enough to start, decent handle but clearly not the type of player Mooney is gonna have run his offense, above average defender, but not winning any all defensive team award. Fantastic glue guy, 6th man type of player, but if we can replace him with an A-10 caliber starting player, that will be a net advantage to us.

Also agree that these defections clearly bust the one remaining myth that Mooney has created this great family culture that no one wants to leave. And I do say "myth" because if you have been paying attention and have any connections with the team, you know that is not the case anyway. But now, it is more clear to see.

Will miss him, played with a lot of spirit and was not afraid to make a play. I do think he and Roche are a bit of duplication of skill set, so can totally see this move . Hope he finds a great spot and school.
You think he and Roche are duplicates? I don’t see that at all. Roche has one skill. I thought Randolph had athleticism and aggression that most of his teammates lacked. I really blame Mooney for wasting so much time playing Goose this year. Not only did he not deliver, but we weren’t able to develop some of the guys behind him either. I think Randolph has a lot of potential and hope he gets to develop that under a more competent coach.

Here was my write up, I think most folks agreed. Marcus may have been in general agreement as well. I just don't recall Randolph getting to the rim and finishing very often at all. Mostly due to his handle and then size. I did think he was great at being shot ready and having a quick release, similar to Roche. I think Roche actually was better at mid range, i.e. when he tried to drive and got stuck - he could get off the 10-12 footer. Not knocking Marcus, and hope he is great at his next stop, hopefully not the A10 :)

Don't get me going here again, but yes 100 times over. One of Mooney's biggest faults and there are many is his overreliance on "senior" players that he trusts, despite the fact that said players don't really deliver all that much on the court. Goose was a mediocre offensive player, he was a good but not great defender, who made critical defensive errors at all of the wrong times and yet we roll him out there for 30 plus minutes every single game, without question.

So if you are Randolph and you see your minutes limited because of a player of Goose's caliber imagine what you must think about your minutes if we are bringing in some guards in the portal who can actually ball.

I think you're underestimating Roche. his defense is more than fine. he can be a big piece if given the minutes and with the right guys around him.

The difference I see is that Randolph could also be a ball handler - Roche last year treated the ball like a hot potato - getting it out of his hand (either shooting or passing it) as quickly as possible. Hopefully Roche is working on that this summer.
