Petition

i would sign it if i thought it would end the constant crap but have no confidence that it would. if our new Athletic Director does not have lists of all kinds of coaches and good relations with search firms, then we are in trouble, think he does, part of the deal. he should be three moves ahead of any action he might take, hope he is.

I was one of the biggest Mooney supporters on here and a lot has changed and I don't think this will happen.

Last season we were coming off a 20-12 season and most knew we would not be as good after losing our 2 best players, one of them being one of the best players in program history. A down season after that seemed ok as long as it would be followed with a winning season.

Now we're coming off a 12-20 season where we have been told and have told ourselves that it was because of youth and inexperienced players. We may have rightfully expected a better season this year but with Sherod out I don't see it happening.

I think the time has come to begin right now searching and scouting for a new head coach. The move wouldn't be made to hire one until the offseason but starting the process now is the right move so that we can hire the right coach and not just fire Mooney and fire an underwhelming replacement. I've been one of his biggest supporters here but it seems that the time has come for a change. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors, wherever they may be.
I've seen it to many times the pathetic season ends and the University tries to rationalize their decision to keep the coach (in large part because they don't want to pay the buy out) and the coach stays.

On Black and Drew this morning, Drew mentioned possible end of season solution as Mooney staying on and only changes to the asst/support staff. If true, that is not an acceptable outcome.

Agree 100 percent that Hardt should be allocating time every week to track and update his list of possible replacements. There are a few on here that advocate the high level assistant as possibility. This strategy seems to be paying off now for StonyBrook, but Ihave seen it fail quite a bit too. Will be interesting to track LaSalle and Quinipiac. If I recall, both hired bally hooed Villanova assistants.

Think the Associate Head Coach of Lakeland Magic, Spider alum Mike Winecki, would be available if we asked...................

This should’ve been last year’s outcome.
Agreed. Hell no. This all on Mooney. Yes, we've all known he should have changed assistants a few years ago, but he lacked the insight, leadership, and b*llls to do it then. Too late now.

And yes, Hardt should have mandated this last year.

Gene Hackman?
Bring him on - he's older than Tarrant but age doesn't matter; look what he did in the movie Hoosiers! and Dennis Hopper is a young 82 so he would fit the bill as well...............and yes Kneepad give Winecki a chance - long term Assistant at UNC-W, Clemson, and now Lakeland Magic - don't you think he has learned anything? - particulary on D E F E N S E. Haven't seen much effectiveness in that category recently............................

Winiecki has been let go by both Brownell & Wainwright as assistant. Don't know why but not good.

I can't even recall last time an interim coach from the outside was named. So this is a fantastical discussion. But if we tried to treat it as not fantastical, sure sign me up for J New, Lieberman, Eastman, or Jeff Van Gundy as Interim. I mean who wouldn't. The first 3 because of connections and/or local. Van Gundy because besides being great coach imo, he remains 1 of my favorite off the wall rumors of all time on these boards....basically that he was meeting with Jim Miller about job. So odd. But hey I did see him at a UR-Fordham game in the Bronx when Beilein was coach so I bought it for a milli sec.

If you haven't signed the petition yet, don't forget. Link is at the top of the thread.

Not trying to be (incredibly) inflammatory here, but wondering if the lack of momentum with the petition may actually hurt the efforts of the organizers?

Thought '17 provided some nice commentary last page on how it shouldn't be considered by those in a position of power, regardless of the count (63 as of this posting).

You stayed up until 1:30 to post that '05? If we were to send this petition out to all alumni in the last 12 years may have a better reach. If I am a fan of VCU (only sometimes) or another A10 school I am not touching that thing. I am starting one to keep the Moonster. I am guessing if you look at number of active posters vs signatures on this petition, it is very high.

He wasn't drinking as heavily as he was after the Hampton game.

The petition is kinda "meh." FMM only has 300 or so followers, so the number of sigs is about what you'd expect. While it's well written, Hardt's not going to read it. It takes him his assistant weeks to send a canned response to his emails.

It might just be an annoyance but anything/everything is something. Mooney earned it after brushing off that question. The Spiders just beat an ACC school and lost to a BigEast school that are currently ranked at the bottom of their conferences.

Appreciate the compliment 05.

I think many of us are overthinking this petition as a true gauge of fan support for Mooney or lack there of. I don’t think that’s the case. FMM Twitter has 300 followers, this board has around 100-200 (?) posters with an account who frequently view this forum. I’m sure there’s some overlap between FMM followers and posters on this board, so really around 300 are seeing this petition. Many of whom just don’t feel like signing, disregarded it, or don’t want to give their name or email address to the petition. The numbers signing this petition are not an accurate reflection of the displeasure with Mooney among the Richmond fan base.

Reason for my interest in the petition is because last time we had one, it was Cooper/Football and it helped energize the fanbase with thousands of signatures.
Really? No petitions went out about men's soccer or track?

I seem to recall some circulating after Ms. CC's short story was published, too.

Just look at the crowd last night for an ACC opponent on a Saturday night. Our fanbase doesn't need to sign a petition to show how it feels. Listen to what Hardt said on the radio of how many emails and phone calls he is getting.

If you think the lack of interest is a detractor from the message that Mooney needs to get canned, i would disagree.

The football petition also had a ton of football alumni involved. There aren't nearly as many basketball alumni, and most played for Mooney anyway. I bet if we tried to downgrade the basketball program to D3 you'd see the same kind of response as with football. That would be more apple to apples.

Yeah that other petition had an abruptness to it as well. This is about firing another person which ppl feel worse about not an action like the football deal. As legger says if u tried to downgrade hoops it would be through the roof w signatures. Plus that football petition u could see everyone’s names which leads to more when u recognize names. I’m not even sure it required an email either. I know the person who was involved w football one I can ask. So I don’t think this one is very reflective.

Personally I’m in favor of a coaching change but didn’t sign the petition for own reasons. Expect others in same boat. On another note I think if u r gonna start a petition u should have your name on it. Different standard than twitter or a message board imo.

His staff is pretty bad, but Mooney hired them.

Hardt also said during his interview that he doesn't demand changes to coaching staffs. So if any changes occur, it will be Mooney making them. Which means none will occur. Hopefully it's all beside the point anyway once Hardt lowers the axe.

I signed the petition. (But I did not shoot the deputy.)
I do not think that Chris Mooney will be fired. I think that he has become a part of our culture, he and his family are a part of the UR family, for life...
We need to deal with it, which gets me back to why I signed the petition.
It's how we deal with it. My notion of how we deal with it is embodied in the petition and my signature appended thereto, to-wit:
I thought it necessary to get coach's attention and the attention of the powers that be and let them know that we demand a winner.
And we just cannot lose to teams who were erstwhile constituted solely of persons having an extra X chromosome.
Chromosomes matter.
They really do.
