A petition has been started asking for a change in leadership in our Men's basketball program.

The social media campaign and message board chatter has been great but if those of us who want change want to realize that goal, we need to do more.

This petition is just one thing we can do. I am looking forward to hearing what other options are most passionate fans can bring to the table to make sure we are heard in an effective, constructive manner.

what exactly do you hope happens? do you bring in an out of work coach, or promote a current assistant?

Nancy Lieberman is available.

For the record, I am not as high on her hire as a full time coach for us. I am not totally against it. It would bring a ton of buzz to the program, and I think she very well could be a home run. But, I don't think she has experience on the college level coaching? It would be a lot of pressure and scrutiny for players already going through a tough career at Richmond. BUT, I could see her as a big time recruiter, has a million connections, is a WINNER, and seems like a great lady. But yes Spiderman, I would think she is available now????

Honestly, the season is lost and that is his decision to make. If it were me, I would probably promote, Marcus Jenkins as interim. No sense in bringing in someone from the outside who doesn't know the team to just finish out this year.

I think we should all be concerned about player morale as the season progresses and trying not to lose the few core pieces that we have. If Jenkins can take over and get them to play hard, even if they lose, I think the fans will embrace this season for what it is.

Keeping Mooney on at this point is potentially adding fuel to a fire that is on the verge of burning out of control.

And we hire a new coach in the Spring after a thorough search for the best possible candidate. You are not getting that candidate mid season which is why one of the assistants becomes interim for the rest of the year.

Jenkins or Jones would be the only reasonable options mid season, imo. and I don't think that accomplishes much.

The season is lost no matter what. The only determination is how much pain and suffering does the AD want to put themselves and the fan base through by keeping Mooney around as a lame duck until the end of it. A good number of folks are rightly pissed off right now. Its November, it gonna be on a long winter.

interim coach likely won't stop the pain and suffering. not sure if it would be a positive or a big negative to the players.

I agree with you that the likelihood of Mooney being let go during the season is pretty low. However, if that were to happen and we had an interim coach, I don't think fans would really complain with losing as much because we know that the AD has made the clear choice to find another coaching option. Not firing Mooney during the season (while not a sign that he won't get fired afterwards) still gives the uncertainty to fans that Mooney might still be able to squeeze by and find excuses to continue coaching.

I think an interim would stop the bleeding in terms of disgust and dissension from the fanbase/season ticket holders/alumni. Everyone would recognize that we are going to have a new coach. I think a huge weight would be lifted from everyone that has to be weighing down everyone from players to coaches to administrators.

Your right on the players though, I'm not sure how they would feel about it. But none of them can be having a great time now anyway.

It's kind of like watching a terminal loved one die, everyone knows they are going to pass, but until they do, no one can move on and is just stuck watching them suffer and suffering too.

Jenkins or Lewis would be the possibilities - Jones is attached to Mooney. At least the other guys have coached elsewhere.

Didn't realize how in bed Spiderman was with Mooney until last few of his posts. What it accomplishes is Mooney no longer coach. BIG accomplishment and most important one!

A change midseason would at least show that change is imminent in the off-season. No change during the season means the powers that be think everything's fine.

didn't realize it until now? I think highly of the man and I agree with a lot of his philosophies. but they aren't working.

it would appease the fans, no doubt. I want what's best for the players. I don't care much for the complaining old guys in the stands or on the internet.

at this point I think a change is imminent anyway. I don't think we have the horses for a remarkable job saving turnaround.

I think highly of him, just not as UR head coach. So no matter how long Mooney's philosophies don't work, you still want him as coach?
thought I was clear on that. no, I've given up hope. I think we move on this off season, assuming we're able to write that check. I don't think the team benefits from firing him mid season though. I don't think you make changes like that in college hoops outside of health issues or misconduct.

We are a day (or year) late on this. He should have been gone after last season. Especially when Buck and Fore didn't return. And while Buck may have done it to himself, he was recruited, mentored, and managed by Mooney and the staff - as are all players. Losing 2/5 of your starting line up and not having a plan B is Mooney's fault I guess. But he is such a freaking fake that he never owns up to anything. The caller Jeff today tasked Bob with following up JOC's question on state of program. Let's hear his weak answer tonight.

10 to 1 that Black does not follow up and ask the question.

Fair enough SMan. I just hope a 17-16, 18-15 type season doesn't squash Hardt's thoughts, if he has them of replacing Mooney.
man, I'd be pretty excited with a season like that right now. I know that's not a particularly high bar, but after Hampton I don't think any of us expect 17-18 wins any more.

Only reason you fire Mooney now is if you have a coach you know you want to get and can get, and it is someone who is not coaching at the moment. So by firing Mooney now - you have the first shot before the end of the season and openings all around pop open. But you only do this if you know you can get this person. Promoting one of his assistants is not a good option at this point because I don't think we have good assistants. Jones has been around since he was director of operations and has just worked his way up because he has stayed the longest. Jenkins left UR as Director of Operations to be assistant at Princeton, where they did nothing but make the CBI twice, then came back to UR. So probably needed a job and Mooney had an opening.

Let Mooney coach out the season and make a change at the end - assuming we don't win out.

My fear is once the season is over, the pressure slackens, the embarrassing loses stop, the press has lost interest, etc....... UR won't do anything but talk about the good times to come next year. 'the team improved' 'we have a lot of returning starters' 'we were young' and can hear the litany of rationalizations now.

I was one of the biggest Mooney supporters on here and a lot has changed and I don't think this will happen.

Last season we were coming off a 20-12 season and most knew we would not be as good after losing our 2 best players, one of them being one of the best players in program history. A down season after that seemed ok as long as it would be followed with a winning season.

Now we're coming off a 12-20 season where we have been told and have told ourselves that it was because of youth and inexperienced players. We may have rightfully expected a better season this year but with Sherod out I don't see it happening.

I think the time has come to begin right now searching and scouting for a new head coach. The move wouldn't be made to hire one until the offseason but starting the process now is the right move so that we can hire the right coach and not just fire Mooney and fire an underwhelming replacement. I've been one of his biggest supporters here but it seems that the time has come for a change. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors, wherever they may be.

Welcome, ply. Can you post on the "I am done" thread to really memorialize things, though?

Smart players realize that coaches come and go, either because they've done a great job and are moving up, or because they've done a mooney. I don't see players leaving as a problem.

Here's what I find interesting. 71 people have voted a lack of support on the poll thread on this board. As of now, only 29 have put their name to a pledge to ask for Mooney's termination which has been up all day.

How many days did it take to get to 71? Looks like we are up to 30. That's what I find INTERESTING.

So if in the same number of days it takes to get to 71 on spidenation it takes to get to 71 on petition.com will that be interesting?

I signed. I think the thing just needs some more social engagement. To my knowledge, the only way youd find it is to come to this thread first.

I’m a little worried that only 100 names, assuming it gets there, isn’t going to make much of an impact with the AD.

I agree. In the grand scheme, the lost revenue from lack of ncaa units and lost ticket and merchandise dollars will be Mooney's undoing. But signing a petition made me feel like I did something more. Whatever.

There are way more people than 100 who are not satisfied with Mooney, who haven’t signed up. I wouldn’t lend credence to the petition. It’s another way to voice displeasure but at the end of the day, Hardt shouldn’t base his decision on that. Plenty of people are calling in and emailing the AD. That helps get the ball rolling. If some of those individuals are bigger donors, that’ll get the ball rolling even more. Taking fan noise out of the equation, if Hardt now looked at this situation objectively, he would have to conclude that Mooney has reached a plateau of what he is capable of doing and that the obvious next step is to find another coach.
