Put me down in the category for not wanting my 7 foot players taking many 3's. If you are a big man, you are best suited to score down close to the basket.

I love when Barclay gets on Embiid for shooting 3's for the same reason. Yes Embiid is a decent 3 point shooter but literally no one can stop him inside, so you are always giving the defense what it wants anytime a big man is perimeter shots.

And we say the same thing defensively, you tip your cap if other teams center makes a 3, but you also acknowledge that our defense is hoping that they take that shot in the first place.

What do you do when you’re down 12? Post up your 7 footer nonstop? We saw first hand that does not work bc you can’t make up points if the other team is taking 3s (BC game best example where we fed Quinn entire 2nd half and game got away, point by point bc the possessions where we went 2 and they went 3 added up.)

National title game another example. Purdue was Purdone once they got down 9 bc their entire gameplan was feed Edey. And it worked, he scored a ton and UConn ran away. (Sidenote: how overmatched was Loyer in that game?)

Also fwiw, Embiid’s eFG% from 3 is 57% and from 2 is 56%.

Embiid's effectiveness from 3 spreads the floor. that doesn't show up in his stats, but it improves the 2 point shooting of his teammates. the paint is less clogged.

Blank slate. I guess this is a sign of the times in college basketball, but I can’t get excited by this type of roster. Last season had to fill 2-3 starting spots and this year have to fill 4. Seems like a monumental task for Mooney and staff.

Embiid is also a nearly 90% FT shooter vs Shaq 52% FT percentage. He is shooting on average 11 FT's per game this year. So, when he is down low, he is accumulating fouls on the other team, getting to the line, and scoring from the line. He also imposes a physical punishing on whomever has to guard him, which just wears other teams down as well. Walz to a lesser degree obviously can use his large powerful body to wear down other teams as well, when he is down low.

I get what you both are saying, Embiid needs to be out on the perimeter at times and take some 3's from time to time to run the offense and spread the floor. But he is most impactful inside on a number of levels. As Walz will be for us, as Neil was this year in his most impactful games.

I thought Neal was pretty effective outside because he passed so well. he's not really a power guy despite his size.
Walz is more of a banger than Neal to me. I don't think we should run the offense through him as much as we did with Neal.

my point (and I think Brooklyn's) was that Embiid is equally effective shooting from 3 as he is from 2 ... statistically. and pulling his big defender out of the lane can help the effectiveness of his teammates.

but your point about Embiid drawing fouls (and converting) is a good one.

wow, looking at that empty corner behind the bench - no seats, no fans, just empty floor - makes me really appreciate the current configuration of the RC. Same for the baseline, current is better than the single row of chairs. Maybe it is just the tv angle, but I don't remember that at all from watching games in person.

Excited about the Neskovic addition, should definitely fill the starting 4 spot. With three spots left, think our needs are:

- Scoring/lead ball guard
- Shooter (ideally who can defend a bit)
- Versatile defense oriented wing who can guard multiple positions, rebound etc.

Let’s see what we can do.

As we stand now, I could see depth chart shaking out like this:

Guard - Tyne
Guard - Dlo / Roche
Wing Forward - McGlothin/Tanner/Robinson
Big Forward - Neskovic/ Soulis
Center - Walz / Beagle


So much depends on who we land in the portal obviously. Would love to know the list of guys 80's is privy too. As much as I like the potenital of Tanner/Robinson/McGlothin, we could really use a dynamic 6'6 to 6'8 athlete to plug in. Also, back court is really thin of guys that can handle and have quickness. Really interested to see what Tanner brings to the table. At this point, if Dlo for instance were to break a wrist and miss extended time we have Tyne as the only guy would feel comfortable with able to dribble against pressure. So seems like we need at least one more guard. As I am writing this out, and I believe we have 3 openings (Grahams Big Y 2 for 2 scholly does not kick in until next season ), I think we need:

1 - Another dynamic/quick ball handling guard - if he can score like King even better
2- Big shooting guard - 6'3-6'5 shooting guard
3 - Athletic Wing that can play D, rebound, etc like a Bigs or Dji

Will say that even if we don't add too much in the portal - and hope and expect we will - we have nice potential for next season - unlike too many of the lean years when moon would not fill out the roster or we had gaping holes.

I agree with the needs. PG would be key, allowing Hunt to play more off the ball like he did last year, and Tyne and Roche giving us ball handling and shooting off the bench. I would rather not have Hunt and Tyne as the starting backcourt. No doubt the other big need is a bigger guard who can shoot. And, we could use the athletic wing, but agree that would be 3rd on the wish list right now.

Yep, love Tyne's game and potential, and Dlo's grit and abilities, but neither is yet proven as a consistent big time scorer - so agree we need a PG that can create and score - that would be ideal. Maybe we can find a loophole for Darius Brown to come back for a 7th season?

Roche is getting hard to factor in because of his injury status. Missed last offseason, and now missing this offseason. As we know, I was very high on Soulis going into last year, but injuries wiped out his season. I am having a hard time counting on Roche if he is in a boot, and only coming out in time for Oct/Nov or whenever it would be. He is a guy that could give us a big boost.

Will be very interesting as to who we get with this last spot. We definitely needed another lead guard. I like both Tyne and Dlo a lot, but both have some deficiencies, and if either misses time we would be down to 1 ballhandler on the roster.

I could see Walz starting - especially on the trajectory he showed from year 1 to 2. It sounds like Beagle next to him is something Mooney is open to. Lot of lineup possibilities.

In that case I wonder if we go one more transfer, and one re-class. The re-class worked last year picking up two talented players in Soulis and Tyne - and you hope even in the current portal kombat era we can keep guys around for a while.
