Mentioned on a thread awhile ago, if we were to ever part ways with Mooney, I am very fearful of having Hardt make this decision. I don't trust him at all.

I nominate Gkiller, 97, and Eight Legger to chair the comittee. Let's have some fun guys - put your candidates here - with qualifications.

Mooney ain’t going anywhere.Hardt is not in charge of UR athletics.PQ is.Just as PQ is heading up the search for the next UR President. Many coaches/ADs will get a pass due to Covid. Here is no exception.

I was going to ask about the buy out. But with so many extra years added. I guess Mooney is expected to serve forever. So compete recruit young small guards. Praise the Richmond brand and support the community. Be somewhat relevant but never win a title. Got it.

PQ is clearly a successful, ambitious guy. I guess having unfettered access to the UR program is more fun than actually seeing a winning product on the court. You would think that if PQ had such influence he would tire of seeing his investment continually underperform but maybe the fun and value to him is in the access and control. Hope he’s been having fun at least the last decade.

I think the next coach to sign a contract with UR will be......wait for it... Chris Mooney. The rest of you are in denial. #M4L, Mooney for Life.

Last year will be tabbed as an NCAA year and that will be hard to argue against since we were trending in that direction. This year will be blamed on COVID, but we will still end up with a good record and Hardt will pat Mooney on the back for navigating such difficult circumstance (mind you - so is every other program in the country as well). Next year (assuming only starter returning is Burton) I predict we fall back to right around .500 (give or take 2 games) and it will be tabbed as a rebuild year.
Mooney is going nowhere for the foreseeable future.

Thank you 23. For now I'm just going to reference this prior post...

There is much more don't worry & there will be time. But I would like to pace myself and I'm a little spent from last night's whipping. In due time...

I wonder if Michigan needs another assistant? It's really just time to shake things up, the program has gone stale, we going to have to rebuild after this year anyway so please, lets move on.

It will be difficult to hire a coach after this year anyways because of this past season, with all the COVID and scheduling issues, it is even harder to say who has done a good job and I think the top tier coaches on the rise will likely hold out. I am wondering if some P5 schools hold onto their coach one more season as they chalk up this past year to crazy circumstances with COVID and next season you could see a real influx of open spots across the board.

yep, been saying for a while we just need a fresh voice and new vision at the top. Bring in some up and comer from a "lesser" conference or a veteran retread honestly doesnt even matter to me. the unknowns of 4-5 years with a new coach are infinitely better than the certainty of knowing what this tired and sinking ship will provide in the same amount of time.

This is a guy I like a lot, just not sure he would have any incentive to move on from Utah State to really a lateral move to Richmond. I think the big boys will be after him hard too.
Lateral move in program quality, but not pay....his current contract is paying him around $700K plus potential bonuses.

But I do think he'll jump to a bigger job at this point. He's also been almost entirely a Great Plains/Intermountain West guy, so a shift east would be a major change for recruiting. Not impossible by any means, but can be a factor.

Though I have also cooled on Nate Davis,

I do still like Wes Miller UNCG. Some ugly years early, I think he would be a good fit and would be motivated. THis is assuming his end game is an ACC job. If so, he would be motivated to make NCAA's and raise his profile.

He has been at UNC-G for awhile, and who knows he may be good to be coach for life.

Good stuff. I hear you about the geography, but I do feel like that is not as much a factor today as 20 years ago. Mick Cronin never left the state of Ohio in his life (I jest) but is doing well recruiting at UCLA. But I agree that I think Smith will be a hot commodity and have bigger options. That is part of the problem with the current AD/Admin and Mooneyocrity, I think we have lust a bit of luster.
I know EL and Gkiller will now let me know we are a coveted job, and that will make me feel better.

only problem with Craig Smith is eight legger would have a lot of work to do going back and removing all his posts talking about how much Utah State sucks.
They got off to a slow start out of the gates. EL would like that Smith, based on that slow start, stepped back, examined some things and made adaptations and turned the season around. That would be refreshing to have a coach like that? I know, I know, after the matchup amoeba zone was figured out for 5 seasons, Mooney went to man. He adapts, like a sloth.

Never said Utah State sucks, just that a win over them was not going to get VCU into the tournament on its own.

I think everybody here is missing the obvious answer to replace Mooney.

Joe Scott!

He played PG at Princeton 3 years before Mooney. He was the HC at Air Force for the 5 years before Mooney. And he’s even back as the Hc of Air Force now.

What better resume to replace Mooney with!

Need more convincing? Joe Scott’s teams don’t rebound either. Last season nobody averaged 6 rebounds per game and only two players even reached 5. This year nobody on Air Force even has 4 rebounds per game.

Yeah these other guys are good and all...but why go them when we could go Mooney 2.0

PQ better get his checkbook

Agree w SF here. Smith is good but just wouldn’t happen here for reasons stated.

But if u r looking for an out of the geography box candidate check out Eran Ganot from Hawaii.

He’s an East Coaster originally. UR would probably love his Swarthmore background too. And on my list just lower due to lower probabilities. But he’d be lot more likely than Smith for instance.

Keep eye on Ganot moving up too.

throw these guys on the list--

You guys think Gregg Marshall would fly around here? I bet he would get us a winner on the court just don't know if the powers that be have the stomach for him.

McMahon sure but Marshall and Jans no chance. Way too much off court baggage. No reason when there r lot of good coaches without it.

Look I don’t think Moon is going anywhere but there is a chance at least. It’s inconceivable that there isn’t a chance. It’s about how motivated PQ will be.

Fact is if it wasn’t for the terrible 2 year extension by Hardt it would be likely. Hardt backed us into a problem that he had no reason to create at that time. If u think it was a mistake u got to bite the bullet sometimes.

As stated here by others Mooney always gets a reset. He hasn’t earned the rebuild or at very least mini rebuild that is coming. If u give it to him u r just treading water for another year or 2 making us less attractive and further away from NCAA once a change is made. Best to start that clock now w new coach.

That would be perfect, he gets to leave cleanly. And most important, gets to leave.

Wow, that would be hilarious. BC is hard to recruit to - though they beat us out for G. Thompson, but that is on Mooney.
Goodman alluded to this type of play on a podcast, coach with a couple years left looking for a 4-5 year deal.

This will be a kick in the cajones and hard to digest for the 20 hard core fans mentioned.

Don't see this happening but would be a win/win/win for UR.

I mean, our list can begin and end with Casey Alexander, for that matter.

I can't fathom BC choosing Mooney over Schmidt, frankly, given the ties. Although maybe there's something to be said for recruiting to a school that only checks for welding certificates jumping to BC, versus recruiting to UR jumping to BC?

Fwiw if u look at his other tweets he has Luke Murray as top guy for Fordham. Luke Murray was 1 of my guys if u go back to my link above. Personally I think Luke Murray can do a little better & could easily be a 2nd tier candidate here. Still interesting.

Obv that account is highly speculative and rumor based. The hit % would be quite low but it’s also probably not much different than the well known hoops media guys EARLY in school’s searches b4 they get the scoop near the end. & still expect ends up very wrong on Moon. But one can hope.

This thread is wishful thinking. A pipe dream. Mooney isn't going anywhere in the next couple of years at a minimum.
