Media Discussion of Spider Hoops

I guess I don’t know the relationship between JOC and Mooney, but I thought this was more an attempt at playful banter.

Playing devil advocate, say it was playful banter, well JOC should get playful with Mooney at next postgame if would he be ready to answer the question that he brushed off? I don't think we would see a playful bantering Mooney in action.

really nice JOC piece on Sherod just up on the RTD site. Nick sounds like he's in a great frame of mind.

To his credit, Bob Black asked Mooney the JOC question tonight on the coach's show near the end. Mooney then proceeded to take it a completely different direction and said that since Nick will be reclassifying and will be a junior next year, he believes that class of Gilyard, Golden, Sherod, Cayo and Francis is the best class Richmond has ever had, and so the future is very bright.

In terms of talent I think we have a very good class next year. Golden, Gilyard, Sherod, Cayo, Wojick, Francis, and Tyler Burton. I like what I’ve seen from Sal but need to see more minutes from him. We have talented players but we need a system that is able to fully maximize their ability, stress rebounding, and tough defense. We also need more size (outside of Golden and Cayo). If for whatever reason we have some players transfer out this year, I’d like to see us go for a more traditional big man type player similar to either Derrick Williams or ANO a few years back.

You'd have to go back to the Hampton game and see the question JOC asked that pissed Mooney off (which was what would you say to the fans about the start). Mooney refused to answer, you could tell he was pissed about it.

BTW: Mooney never did follow back up with JOC on his answer. I wish someone could pull that clip from last year as well. Mooney hates being asked what he would say to the fans/stakeholders in the team.
and frankly it could have given Mooney an opportunity to say ' we're off to a bad start but we're going to .this..that etc......... 'or 'Nobody likes this and we're working out butts off to fix it' etc etc.' Any number of civil chances to acknowledge the obvious and layout his plans to improve..... but no Mooney gives the smart ass '.not at this time, thanks for the opportunity John' I trying to recite this from memory.... it really took me aback when I saw it.

GG and Nick if not for health and injury issue would both be seniors next season. So hopefully thinking in the players interest, they are both on pace to graduate so if the team doesn't fare well, they have the option to leave Mooney if Mooney isn't told to leave them. Rooting for the players!

Another half-ass answer from Perrier -- now Bob will go on radio at 8am tomorrow and puff his chest out, "see, I asked the question, and Mooney gave an answer!" Perrier doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to give the answer to JOC's face. He has spin it during the fake news hour.

New Coach Perrier narrative : "playing vs competing". I'm officially done. I can't take this loser mentality crap anymore. They think we're total idiots, and keep shoveling horse manure. I'm not wasting another ounce of energy or one more dime of my money.

Self-imposed ban. Hope everyone has a merry Xmas

Don't blame ya, 10. The "competing" line is definitely loser-speak to me too. What does it even mean? Do you want to try or do you wan to do? It's an intentionally nebulous goal – and one that he can always say we met.

Mooney is slick, that is why he has been able to last 14 mediocre years @ a touch over .500

Why is that such a tough question? I don't get it.
Coach Mooney went to Princeton, right?
And Princeton is still in the Ivy League, right?
And they still have tough academic standards, right?
So was he socially promoted or something?
Or maybe Princeton doesn't focus on the "questionally" challenged?
I mean they are still located in New Jersey, right? So that might apply or make sense.
So I'm thinking for the sake of our program that maybe we should let FRS or spider fan
or whampas answer this difficult question for Coach Mooney.
Maybe BillyWayneJimBob. Or some other luminary.

Or me.
I think that I could handle it ...I could answer the question.,,,with a few hours to prepare.
Maybe more...maybe a full day...or two...honestly, maybe a full week.
But I could handle it...I know I could....given the time and considering the nature of the question.

Given the proper amount of time that I would need to prepare for such a difficult question
(say a month or so), I think that I could do a yeoman's job.
But let me think about that before I commit to answering within a given time.
Months pass before us before we even know it.
Tempus fugit, as the Romans say.
Tempora fugit, as the Asians say.
Because yes indeed this is a really tough question.
In fact, I've never heard it asked before.
So I want to do my homework.
I'm just covering my ass because I may be missing something.
I've done that before. Once.

I think you all being absurd.
Here is a coach trying to save his job, frustrated by his teams performance, and he gets annoyed
with a sports writer, Whoa- there’s a first.
What would a Bobby Knight have said, or a Coach K, if some sports writer was kicking them
while they were down.
And why does JOC deserve this ridiculous support. A writer for years that writes milk toast
articles about the Spiders.
Personally, I think Mooney is just like anyone else in his position

Being annoyed at JOC is fine. Just answer the question. There is a professional way to handle it. It's not difficult. Others on here have outlined some options. I think that our coaches need to be challenged.

I agree that JOC and the RTD have been milquetoast in their attitude toward our program, for the most part. It is because they do not respect our program because we are not relevant.
And who's fault is that?

But JOC's question in the interview was anything but milquetoast. You should laud him for the question. It was the first occurrence of a legitimate question posed to any of our coaches in years. It was the type of question which should be asked. And answered. Mooney has a responsibility to us fans to which he should be accountable and the question was the perfect one to which his failure to answer is inexcusable.

If you are happy with mediocrity then you should continue to give him a pass as to fielding questions of this nature. However, you should be aware that it does nothing but perpetuate the mediocrity of the program. I am not happy with his performance and expect accountability.
And please tell me why could Mooney not admit his shortcomings and apologize? I could have accepted that and hoped that he could make the necessary changes and move us in the right direction...and been behind him 100%. That is what anyone of high character and maturity would have done. But he did not.

So I will continue to press the issue until I see a change.

John O'Connor is a Hall of Fame journalist being disrespected by a barely .500 coach! It is outrageous!

I almost wonder if the Sherod injury saves Mooney. I agree - the future is bright. Assuming - everyone returns (remember 2 key members left after last season) then we still have the solid core of Sherod, Gilyard, and Golden - and then you throw in Wojik and Cayo with a year under their belt where they play a lot of minutes and get a lot of expoerience. Then we throw in Blake Francis off the bench - we a guard heavy team with the glaring weakness being depth with our big guys.

I think if Mooney wins 15 games this year - they will see this argument and keep him.. But to keep him you have to give him an extension for recruiting purposes, which means - fi he falters, you have to be willing to pay him to go away. Gone are the days when you can let a contract expire, you just dig yourself a major hole.

coaches hate meeting the media, part of the job but if left up to them, they would not show, except on their terms. am not a soothsayer or predictor by any means but my envelope says, "no matter how he answered that question, he would have been attacked and criticized".

"MolivaManiac said: John O'Connor is a Hall of Fame journalist being disrespected by a barely .500 coach! It is outrageous!"

Briefly stated; this is the funniest post ever! LOL.

Ulla, I'm not sure why you think it's funny. Actually it's factual.

Ulla and I must have the same sense of humor. I found it funny too. Sign of the times when 3rd party people are outraged over something they think someone should be offended about, whether that person is offended or not.

I'm no John Wayne, but I do know I wouldn't lose a second's sleep if I was JOC over CM's supposed slight. but hey, maybe you all are right. maybe JOC is upset. and if so, then I'll feel bad about being so callous. but I'm confident JOC is ok. you know ... since he's not a 6 year old.

JOC is apparently better at his job than Mooney is at his. Perhaps JOC should laughingly tell Money so. You know, in the spirit of friendly banter.

Breathe, buddy.

Also, Mooney's public apology to JOC is overdue.

The perfect response. (It'll never happen.)

Setting: The next joint Q&A with Mooney and Mike Rhoades

JOC: "Mike, even though your program has enjoyed a lot more success than Richmond since 2006, your fans were vocal with their displeasure that you missed the NCAAs just one time in the past seven years. You lost Marcus Evans to injury. Still, you refused to schedule a bunch of cupcakes on your non-conference slate this season, instead choosing a run against 2018 tournament teams Texas, Virginia, Charleston and Wichita State. Care to give your fans a mid-season state-of-the-program?"

Rhoades: "Thanks for the opportunity, John." <gives his answer>

JOC: "See Chris.....see?"

Mooney would be the worst courtroom lawyer ever. Anytime something happened that he didn't expect, he would ask the judge for a recess to think about his response.

Good thing he's doing something he's good.... oh, wait.

On November 12 on Black and Drew (the impetus for this thread):
Drew: "Things are getting worse......this is turning into a bleepshow.....if the Spiders don't emerge from non-conference play with an .800 winning percentage, I'm going to start calling for Chris Mooney's job."

I haven't heard him call for Chris Mooney's job yet....have you?
I’m expecting the call for CMs job to happen on monday.

Probably best case is 6-7 against a dreadful OOC slate. Eek.

It won't. When I pressed him on it, he walked it back. He said the actual take was that if we don't go .800 in OOC play or reach the A10 championship game, he'll call for his job. So he's giving him the whole season. He didn't mention the A10 Championship on the show in question, and couldn't tell me when he said that.
