Media Discussion of Spider Hoops

Hardt has been getting a pretty good but respectful grilling for a half hour ... still another half hour to go, if you are inclined.

Why grill him? He is just doing his job. Everytime one of you acts up,it makes his job and Coach Mooney's job that much more difficult.

Ha, he would. But I think he said all he could say. He might want to take Mooney behind the woodshed right about now, but he can't say that on the radio. I thought he was a good listen.

I want to give Hardt a big shoutout.. He not only came on the show (something Gill would never do) but also did not shy away from all tough questions given to him. Not only that, he gave explicit and concrete answers that our expectations are A10 championships and NCAA tournament basketball at the University of Richmond. Listening to the entire hour segment, I was very pleased to hear his responses and what he said. Hardt talked about how he wouldn't be here if the administration from top to bottom wasn't committed to basketball and its success for championships and NCAA tournament appearances -- so to anyone who may question our commitment to championship caliber basketball, stop with the nonsense. At the end of the day, even though Mooney is woefully under performing, it seems that with facility upgrades, commitment to championship caliber basketball from the administration, that we are moving in the right direction. The final piece of the puzzle will be our coaching change come next March.

One thing I wanted to highlight. John talked about loyalty to the program through thick and thin, and it has been something I have been saying too. Being loyal to the program/team and wanting a coaching change are not mutually exclusively from one another. You can do both. I encourage all of us to continue supporting the team and the players no matter what. To reiterate, supporting the team doesn't mean you are okay with the results or don't want a coaching change. Let's show the commonwealth of Virginia and the A10 that SpiderNation has the best fan base!

I would have liked to ask him specifically what he intends to do to get the basketball program to a championship level. It appears obvious that that is not possible with Mooney as coach, so I hope that was his way of saying "I'm firing this clown as soon as possible."

I hear you 17. Nothing is a done deal until it is done though. So, until Mooney is officially let go, we must continue to make sure our voices are heard. If that means an empty RC this season to drive that point home, so be it.

Thanks for the link Mo, listening now. Hardt made it very clear that after 6 games no changes will be made. It is an ongoing evaluation.

I wish he could assure us he is very disappointed with Mooney and will can him. Unfortunately, if the verdict is somehow still out there (6 games is to early to evaluate, BS), we must continue to lose and voice our opinions even stronger. I love my Spiders so much that I have to wish them to lose in order to ensure long term success. It is a tough love scenario that really hurts. If only he could make a change now, we could all rally behind the team again. We could show our diehard support thru tough times and it would be a great feel good story. But not knowing forces us to want to lose, be vocal against the coach, leave empty seats, etc.

Way things are going, don't think that wanting to lose or not attending, is going to affect the number of losses. Unless something dramatic happens, for example a great basketball player lurking unknown in the student body walks on and is a prolific scorer and Mooney allows him significant court time and/or one or more freshmen becomes a phenom, the losses are going to mount up. Sad but probably all too accurate.

when Jacob is healthy, he and Grant will be enough some nights. and someone else will step up with the extended opportunity. likely Wojcik, but someone else too.

Hardt should call for a fan vote. He should say "if you are displeased with Mooney show it by not attending our next home game".
I know the above is not going to happen but they could receive thousands of emails/letters/phone calls and no one outside of the AD staff would know. It would never get on social media.
Something "visible" needs to happen so that JOC has to report it and the AD could not ignore it.

So you are saying, he didn’t announce who will be the next coach on Sunday if we lose either of the next two?

Or they could have quite a promotional event. Give out red and blue tee shirts. One color to keep Mooney, one color to find someone else...

But, wait 64, doesn't the RTD have lots of difficulty figuring out how many people are actually at our games? The stands could be totally empty but the RTD might report that as a sellout............................

Sarcasm I hope.... as is this.... Nobody every complains when they pay someone to provide a service and the service is not satisfactory. I never complain when steaks are over cooked, car repairs are done properly, I just keep giving them money and hope it gets better.......yeah right.

I hope you aren’t complaining with car repairs are done properly...

“Sir, you repaired this perfectly!!! What is wrong with you?!?! I didn’t want this!!! I refuse to pay!”

Well, to an extent it already has. The JOC Q and SpiderJeff follow up on Mon. Bob spent chunks of Mon and Tues radio show playing defense and damage control

The first half hour was good. Excellent calls by “Spider Jeff” and the second caller. I believe Hardt is serious about winning and would like to say he is done with Mooney, but obviously can’t. He knows people are pissed and he didn’t come here to tarnish his reputation with a losing basketball program. I don’t think it will happen mid season unless CM has a meltdown, but I predict big change is coming to Spider Basketball!

Finally had a chance to listen. Good hour. Good job by the callers - if any of them are on here.

Definitely no ringing endorsements for Mr. Mooney - so that's good. Hardt seems like a thoughtful pro of AD, hope we can have the confidence that his actions will be for the long-term benefit of UR basketball.

I enjoyed Hardt's calmness and ability to not dodge the question. I do believe that he is looking at how CM coaches with
one or two of the big three missing, as it will be a chance to see how competitive and prepared he makes the team. Also how
he adjust his coaching or does he adjust his coaching style. Does he improve game over game with young players or does he
stick with playing a short bench and wearing out his starters? I feel any good coach faced with the current situation is going to accept
it and move out of his comfort zone in other to be competitive.

Interesting last few minutes of Black and Drew with Jim Miller today. Andrew Wallace is getting quite good at asking questions. Hopefully someone will post the link to the audio vault when it's up later.

Andrew was asking Jim about length of contract extensions and buyouts, etc. Jim made a comment like "sometimes you extend a coach and look brilliant. sometimes you extend a coach and look stupid." Yowzers.

Jim also had some amusing comments about Jerry Wainwright.

Wow, Jim Miller owning his mistake. The last bastions of Mooney's internal support are starting to crumble.

Miller made a huge bet, and loss. unfortunately we season ticket holders are paying for the loss

Not sure if you heard JOC this morning on 950, but he said he doesn't expect Gilly to be 100% all year. Mooney's decision to play Gilly the 2nd half of the Wyoming game on a freshly injured groin may end up haunting him, us, and Gilly all year.

Frankly, both JOC and Miller sound to me like guys that know we are about to move on. Perhaps I am just hearing what I want to hear but I thought there was some revealing candor from both of them.
